Confusing cultural conundrums

Just had a discussion about hockey. :D

It's called hockey here and as far as I'm aware refers to "field hockey". When we mean ice hockey we say ice hockey. Not a lot of it here because there's not a whole lot of ice. :p

Apparently it's the exact opposite in Canada. Hockey means ice hockey and when anyone plays it anywhere other than on ice it then gets a prefix, like "field hockey."

I find this fascinating. The little differences. :)

Anybody experienced any others? :)

  • In Ireland, we call confusing cultural conundrums "Situation 47". We only use the word conundrum when we're watching daytime quiz shows.

Well, based on my initial complete lack of any clue what you're talking about, we have neither. :D But apparently, this is the ice-cream man? We just call him the ice-cream man, no fancy pseudonyms for us, no ma'am. :D We're simple farmin' folk. :) (Lie)

Hmmm, must have remembered that wrong then. Or perhaps Mr Whippee didn't extend to Ireland? I know that recently a guy here bought an original British Mr Whippee van and is now trundling around Brisbane in it selling soft serve. :)

I just went out for a fag... well a wee drag... and pondered this.

matches were what I used to LIGHT said fag. Games are manipulative endeavours generally used by people in a relationship to get what they want.

Ringette is a team sport played on an ice surface. Players are generally women, wear ice skates, and use straight sticks to control a rubber ring; with the objective of the game being to score goals by shooting the ring into the opponent's net. It was introduced by Sam Jacks in North Bay, Ontario in 1963. It is played internationally in such countries as Canada, Sweden, Finland, France, and the United States.

Cool! Thanks smarchee. :) Wonder what they call ringette in Sweden, Finland and France?

Oh and field hockey is all we know here. :D

I stand corrected. Wikipedia rules. Ringette is such a strange take on hockey, but I guess for girls, before they were allowed to play with men, it had all the skill of hockey with a little bit of a twist. Field hockey is cool, I like watching it if I get the chance, I think we have so much hockey here that it doesn't exist in too many places. It's mainly at the university level I believe, although I know our woman's field hockey team is going to kiss ass in China

I discovered, that in England when one is in a crowded, loud pub and trying to get the attention of your university instructor by holding two fingers up, in a reverse peace sign, does NOT translate into "let's go for a smoke" . . . if your British, you know what I mean :o

Also tab, snout, fag . . . how many ways can you say cigarette?

Ouch ... not a good way to get on the right side of your university instructor :o I hope someone explained it to you pretty quickly :D

The reverse peace sign seems to be a thing rappers seem to do in interviews or on the red carpet ... quickly the camera pans away ... :p
