So can anyone from Seattle tell me about the northwest academy of healing arts? Ive researched the school and seems like a great place but Is it viable? Are they well known in that area? How is the building where it is located? (2707 Cali Ave suite 201) I can't seem to find a picture of the place so i guess i'm asking if its shammy at all Know anybody who attended? What were their feelings? i'm basically interested in the things i cant find the answers to until i come visit the place(which will be very soon)
Can anyone suggest a cool "surrounding" town outside of seattle that is easily accessible in and out of the city? (just in case money would be an issue)
Are there any recommended "spots" to live, in seattle? Where are the places to avoid?
Does anyone know off hand what the ferry prices are?
If someone can give the the low down, if i make it out that way, i will so get your ass drunk when i arrive
I'm also an aspiring musician.. which is a big portion of why id like to attend school there. (you know, have some fun and hopefully get a few live gigs under my belt whilst obtaining an education) I hear mixed things about the music scene at the moment (its all a matter of opinion anyhow) But i guess my question is.. is seattle an easy place to promote ones band/self? Is it hard to find venues/clubs/bars to play at? (i know there are plenty around but, is basically im asking is, is it hard to become "part" of the live music scene there? )
Again, any and all help would be greatly appreciated
I haven't heard anything about the school you're speaking of, the only school that I know of that does that is called Bastyr, and it's located in Kenmore (over the lake, and a few miles north). But the address is in West Seattle, which is very suburban. From West Seattle to downtown, you have a few different choices. In the summer months, there's a water taxi that goes from Alki beach to one of the ferry piers here in Seattle. I would suggest that you get a metro pass (about $65/month), because that covers the cost of the water taxi, all the public transit around here and the train services. Other than that, there's a few bus routes that go straight into Seattle. Other than that, it's the West Seattle Bridge onto either I-5 (major freeway) or the Alaska Way Viaduct (arterial, also possibly getting ready to be torn down)
As far as surrounding towns, there's just a few. It's a very marked divide between Seattle and it's suburbs. The city itself is just a few miles, and then it's alllllll suburbs. Surrounding towns up north are Northgate, Shoreline, Lake City, Edmonds, and Mountlake Terrace (farther north you get into Lynnwood/Everett territory). Eastside contains Woodinville, Bothell, Kirkland, Redmond, and Bellevue (more expensive). Southwards has Renton, Burien, Seatac, Federal Way, and farther down, Tacoma and Olympia. As far as prices go, Seattle proper is mid-range, northwards is generally a bit more pricey, eastside is very expensive, and you're unlikely to find a cheap apartment, and southwards is cheap, mainly because it's still very much under a lot of development. When you're looking at where to live, it depends on what you're looking for in a neighborhood, each one is very different from the next.... But if you're looking for bars/music, I would say stay within city limits, no farther north than the University District, and no farther south than Georgetown. Hope that's been helpful, let me know if you have any more questions
P.S. our bud is awesome, we're right in the trade route for all those Vancouver goodies.

Shoreline is at the northern border, Burien, Renton and Tukwila at the southern. Look around the neighborhoods for trash and abandoned cars. Avoid those neighborhoods.
If you live in the city, I do not recommend most of my neighborhood (First Hill). It's full of druggies and transients. Though it is just up the hill from downtown, which is nice.
The Central District, South Seattle, Rainier Valley and the southern areas of West Seattle have more crime, etc.
I'm not a fan of Lake City, but like most other North Seattle neighborhoods. What's important to you in a neighborhood?
Does anyone know off hand what the ferry prices are? Also, what is the ferry situation in a nutshell?
If someone can give the the low down, if i make it out that way, i will so get your ass drunk when i arrive

I don't have an answer to this, I'm not a musician, but have recently found that just by stepping out the door, it's amazing who you can end up meeting. Network! Vince Mira was discovered playing on the sidewalk near Pike Place Market and was recently part of Stone's Hank Williams tribute night.
and this is probably the most important question... will i get looked at like i'm an asshole if i light up a smoke on the street?
Again, any and all help would be greatly appreciated
Yes, you will.
As far as the other smoke goes, well, from what I hear It's great having BC as a close neighbor.

Well i guess most of my questions are very visual questions (such as the school im looking into/ NW academy of healing arts id like to know SOMETHING more about before i book a flight to go check it out)
is it easy to live and thrive in the city on a tight budget? I will be attending school so im sure things will be tight for the first year i am there. Are jobs easily accessible for all positions? Such as, is there a large market of "student jobs" something no lower than 10 bucks an hourish.. Not sure if you have ever visited the east but how expensive is everyday life in seattle? Is food skyrocketing like it is here in the east? ( i swear to god, everytime i go to the grocery store if i pick up 5 things im at least 80 bucks in the hole)
Is seattle a youthful city? Is it somewhere that a young person could have fun in depsite a tight budget and schedule? Will i be miserable here without money in my pocket every day? (mistake i made with Savannah)
Is it difficult to drive in seattle? Sorry just throwin em at you as they come
Im basically intrested in a neighborhood that isnt scummy, run down or have crack heads on the porch.. Somewhere relatively safe but doesnt have to be the best of the best...
Just somewhere safe to lay my head Huble and Modest i guess is what im in search of..
and UH OH.. dunno if i can handle another 'non smoker friendly' city but i guess if thats the only flaw , i can work around it I am planning on quitting anyways so if theres good bud around shouldnt be a a problem
Im a little worried that none of you guys have heard of this school i must admit.. that means it either really really sucks or is really really new..

There are plenty of young people in the city. There are a lot of free things to do in the Summer. The rest of the seasons take a little imagination, unless you don't mind the outdoors in the rain.
Food can be absolutely fucking outrageous. Meal planning helps a lot.
I don't know about student jobs, but our state minimum wage is $8.07/hr
Traffic is a bitch in Seattle, but I hear that's easing up since gas jumped to $4.50/gal

I've been a student at the University of WA as long as I've lived in Seattle...it's okay living here on a tight budget. Our food is creeping up, not skyrocketing, HOWEVER our gas is. We're at somewhere around 4.60/gallon right now... I'm toying with selling my car (I use it maybe once a week) and relying on public transit. I don't really know about the whole job thing, I've worked with the same company for over four years. I imagine it depends on where you live. If you're in the U-District, there's no shortage of student jobs, as you say (below $10) Our minimum wage is $8.77 right now. And again, it's youthful in certain neighborhoods. There's a couple of old money neighborhoods that are stuffy and boring, lol...

Neighborhoods can change within a matter of a few blocks. I used to live in a safer part of my neighborhood, but now I'm by the food bank and everything has changed. Look around the net. If a neighborhood appears interesting to you, run it by us. I think most of us are happy to answer questions.
And your school may be really new, who knows. Bastyr is a much better know alternative medicine school around here. http://www.bastyr.edu/

I walk ALL over Capitol Hill. There is ONE street I try to avoid - Summit between Pike and Denny or Olive. Still, if a condo came up at a good price on that street, I would buy it. It would be an upgrade from where I live now.
You should know we joke and call Capitol Hill, "Cap Hill". There have been quite a few shootings between 1 and 3 am. But they are totally random, so I don't worry about it.
Also, I used to walk my dogs around the 'hood between 5 and 6 AM all of the time.

SPD sucks. They are total fucking pricks. This is coming from someone with a healthy respect for the law. Our cops are much more interested in busting jay-walkers than crack dealers. I don't get it.
Lukin66, you by chance live in the U-District? When I lived there, a dude was killed by a skateboarder, so maybe the bus thing was karma.

check out downtown, greenlake, university district, fremont, wallingford, and queen anne neighborhoods. they're all fairly central. as someone already said - mere blocks can be worth hundreds of dollars of rent per month.
West Seattle really is on it's own, only a couple ways in and out of that part of the city. I've lived here all my life and only been over there a few times (took yahamita over when she was here!)
One thing you should know is that Bastyr University is on the east side which is anywhere from 30-60 minutes from Seattle depending on traffic.
As far as getting booked into clubs, it's been MANY years since my husband was in a very drunk band and would find places to play. Jimmy Z's in Everett will let just about anyone play. El Corazon used to be the Off Ramp and they'd let them in occasionally. I really don't know what their booking policies are now. A good resource would be The Stranger's music calendar so you can look at different venue's policies: http://thestranger.com/seattle/Search?search=music

I didn't hear about the chick getting hammered - at least not in that context.
SPD sucks. They are total fucking pricks. This is coming from someone with a healthy respect for the law. Our cops are much more interested in busting jay-walkers than crack dealers. I don't get it.
Here's what they did to a woman who was being evicted. They had no legal right to do it and, since nobody got a photo of them in the act, they completely deny involvement.

Lukin66, you by chance live in the U-District? When I lived there, a dude was killed by a skateboarder, so maybe the bus thing was karma.
