i think that article was written by trader joe's, since they name-dropped them about 5 times. and those 5 foods sounded fucking disgusting. i needed an article to tell me i should eat lettuce or cabbage instead of potato chips? come on, the reason i don't do that is because lettuce tastes like shit.

what's so grand about a high fiber diet btw? since i bought this high fiber cereal, all it's done for me is make me feel like my intestines are bloated and my stomach is trying to work its way out of my body with my food.

it was also a kick in the nuts to see "get sunlight" mentioned given that chicago winter is looming around the corner :(

lol..I just posted the first thing that came up when you google 'suppress appetite,' which would have been the common sense approach to take instead of asking a bunch of crazed PJ fans..I glanced at the article and it's stuff everyone should already know, aside from the Trader Joe references..

i know, it just got me rolling. i've been wondering about this high fiber thing that's been destroying my intestines and comfort for a week and never got round to asking. and im bitter about winter coming.

Right around as I hit my early to mid 20's, my pizza, burrito, pancakes, more pizza, and Carl's Jr. $6 burgers caught up with my metabolism and I started getting helluh big around the waist and chin.

So I went on a diet, lost 40 lbs, and have generally maintained that weight for the last few years.

But, to keep the appetite under control, I have to eat gobs and gobs of fruit, oatmeal, popcorn and other light snacks or else my stomach starts growling like nothing else.

Besides amphetamines, what do you all do to slay the beast?

    fiber and protein

I notice that some high fiber snacks and cereals make my stomach feel horrible, and others are fine.

Fiber One bars - very very bad...made me feel sick.
    Double Fiber bread - good

I have no idea what accounts for this.

And, re: Chicago winters... At least the summer makes up for it! ;)

You must get quite cold and wet. Or does the outside also exclude you?

Gotta call ya on some mis-info there, sorry.

    1. Eating more frequent meals MAY boost the metabolism, but that definitely remains to be proven scientifically. The studies already done on this are mostly inconclusive...some show that there's no difference between eating 6 meals/day vs 3, and some show that the difference is way too small to even consider using 'metabolic boost' as a reason to eat more often. It is GREAT for appetite control though, and that's why I eat smaller meals about every 3 hours. And when you think about it, if eating more frequently boosted metabolism by any significant amount, you'd actually be hungrier since you'd be burning more calories at rest apparently. Seems to work the opposite way for me though...I'm rarely hungry if I'm eating every 3 hours or so.

    2. An excess of CALORIES makes you gain weight. Doesn't matter if those extra calories come from carbs, fat, or protein. Yea, it makes sense to eat less carbs at night, but that's only because you typically don't need the energy then...has nothing to do with the body storing fat.

And I gotta call you there too. Over a prolonged period of eating more smaller meals, the body has to adapt to that volume of food, thus is speeds up the rate with which it processes the food. I'll find you links galore when I've got more time! No you wouldn't be more hungry because based on the smaller meal idea, it takes about 3 hours to digest the food, and then when that time is up you are eating again, so hunger shouldn't come in to it.

The excess of calories thing is a very hot potato, and yes it has everything to do with storing fat. Without carbs your body can't store fat, glucose is a trigger to fat storage.

Yes, the body certainly adapts to larger/smaller VOLUMES of food after while...this has nothing to do with meal frequency though. When I talk about 6 meals a day vs. 3, I'm saying the overall volume/calorie level doesn't change. I'm sure you can find plenty of links on adaptation to volume. It's just irrelevant to meal frequency

And "without carbs your body can't store fat"? Omg man...drink a quart of vegetable oil with 3 pounds of ground beef, and see what happens. You'll definitely store some of that as fat. When carbs are absent, your body uses fat for energy...if you have an excess of dietary fat in your system, any unused fat will be stored as body fat. Carbs aren't the only macro that cause an insulin response.

Ok I think we need to rewind here. Firstly, there is no one ‘right’ way of losing weight, and there is much evidence to support many different types of diet. That being said, there is some really compelling evidence that suggests that a lower carb diet is by far the healthiest diet around.

There was a really interesting program shown over here in the UK a few months back, where twin brothers (they were both doctors) went to a remote part of Siberia where the locals live almost exclusively on a sea-mammal based diet – basically like the Atkins diet. Yet they had virtually no incidences of heart attacks, and had an incredibly healthy cholesterol profile.

In terms of what you said about drinking the vegetable oil and eating all that beef, I think most people would throw it up! But you should definitely read this, which basically explains what I was saying: http://www.musclehack.com/what-if-you-cant-get-fat-on-a-high-fat-diet/ watch the video, it’s pretty interesting stuff.

I’m no expert, and I can only go by what I’ve read, and what I have experienced myself through varying my diet.

P.s. have you got a link to the study where they said the six meals idea doesn’t boost your metabolism?

  • Why suppress it....you can eat vegetables all day long and not gain anything.

The question should be how does one suppress cravings for bad food.

If you carefully read that article, you can see that they're assuming that you're not over-eating on calories. It's just a discussion about the common problem of people going calorie-crazy with carbs, and how lowering carbs would benefit most people...very true. But it still doesn't dispute the fact that losing/gaining weight comes down to calories in vs. calories out. Yes, the body can eventually adjust to most calorie intakes, but during that period of adjustment, you'll gain/lose weight because of the calorie balance is off. A high-fat diet can reduce fat gain in people who don't do much exercise, but you can still overeat in calories on any diet, and that's what makes you gain weight.

Here's an article with references to studies done on meal frequency:

You really need to watch the video, it goes in to far more detail. I only posted that link because it's a fairly concise summary - as it says, without the presence of alpha-glycerol phosphate there is no glycerol to bind fatty acids to triglyceride - and thus fat can not be stored as fat. The video features much more detail.

    Thanks for the link.

yeah, it's really only this high fiber cereal i've been having. i guess a sudden uptick in fiber can cause the symptoms i have. i'm going to step it down next time i buy.

and that would be true, except i was in cleveland all summer working and didnt get to enjoy chicago summer! :(
