How do you suppress your appetite?

Right around as I hit my early to mid 20's, my pizza, burrito, pancakes, more pizza, and Carl's Jr. $6 burgers caught up with my metabolism and I started getting helluh big around the waist and chin.
So I went on a diet, lost 40 lbs, and have generally maintained that weight for the last few years.
But, to keep the appetite under control, I have to eat gobs and gobs of fruit, oatmeal, popcorn and other light snacks or else my stomach starts growling like nothing else.
Besides amphetamines, what do you all do to slay the beast?

Was just about to say...the models diet...speed.
Whats wrong with the current way you are doing it if its working? The fruit is a good thing. Add some nuts and seeds maybe???? Not too filling but very good for you.
Plus its better to eat lots of small meals than 2 or three massive ones but humans just find it hard to tailor their lives that way.
Grats on the 40lbs too!!!!!!!!!
lots of fiber.
no more hungries.
very good poops.
They say that gum chewing tricks your mind into thinking you are eating food and somethings going down.
ok - lots of times when you think you are hungry, you actually want water - so aim to drink LOTS - at least a couple of litres per day isn't unrealistic ...
another trick ive used - again, your body isnt truly hungry, but its gotten into the habit of being fed in response to certain situations or feelings. you need to re-train it. so, every time you think you might want to eat something, have a glass of water; or go for a walk around the block or some other form of exercise (in fact the exercise is a great one because it teaches your body to react to stress/anger/boredom by exercising)
and the good old lots of fruit & veges, raw almonds, sunflower seeds.
Eat more whole foods. Whole oats instead of instant oatmeal for example.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals....bout every 3 hours or so.
Finally, eat more fibrous veggies. They help slow digestion which makes you feel full for longer.
Chewing gum gives my cronic indegestion.
I drink lots of water! Water is goooooood and great for your skin!
I tend to eat stuff like the OP, light snacks such as fruit, dried fruit (raisins, apricots etc), salted popcorn and sugar free jelly but the more you eat, the more the calories add up!
Any ideas would be welcome by quite a few on here, I should imagine...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
Easier said than done, my friend...

It's just a state of mind. If you shouldn't be eating what you're about to or craving, then don't.

get your heart broken....
i've noticed the chin thing on me too. i'll be interested to see what tips are offered here. i'm not big yet, but i know it's do or die time... i'm entering the late 20s and it's only going to get harder to lose or maintain.
i swear, i stopped smoking pot years ago, but the munchies NEVER stopped!
i've taken to only having york peppermint patties for candy, and i try to eat fruit/nut mix for a snack instead of cheesy popcorn. more fruit and veggies, less potato chips. now if only i could get on a running schedule.
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I'm very, very frightening
and I'll overdo it'
Great article, thanks!

Like others have said, you need to eat 5-6 smaller meals rather than 3 big meals. This boosts your metabolism - your body learns that it doesn't need to hold on to energy (stored as fat) becasue it gets used to expecting food every 3 hours or so.
I personally wouldn't eat popcorn regularly as a snack because it's a refined carb, and refined carbs cause a spike in insulin and an increase in blood sugar, which in turn sends a signal to the brain that plenty of energy is available, and as a result it can stop burning its body fat and start converting and storing the blood sugar (glucose) as fat. Fibre slows the whole process down, and many of the calories in fibre dense foods will be burned off just digesting it, the same goes for protein, where approximately 30% of its calories will be used just to digest it.
So basically you want to keep your blood sugar levels lower and more steady by eating protein and fibre rich foods, and some healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocados etc. Personally, if I'm not doing much and am having a bit of a lazy day, I will really curb the amount of carbs I eat, because unused carbs will end up getting stored as fat, same goes for eating carbs in the evening - it's just energy you're not likely to use up.
Speaking of Green Tea (Disease), did she "disappear" again under her new alias?

My best... friend. Wake up, to see you could have it all
1. Eating more frequent meals MAY boost the metabolism, but that definitely remains to be proven scientifically. The studies already done on this are mostly inconclusive...some show that there's no difference between eating 6 meals/day vs 3, and some show that the difference is way too small to even consider using 'metabolic boost' as a reason to eat more often. It is GREAT for appetite control though, and that's why I eat smaller meals about every 3 hours. And when you think about it, if eating more frequently boosted metabolism by any significant amount, you'd actually be hungrier since you'd be burning more calories at rest apparently. Seems to work the opposite way for me though...I'm rarely hungry if I'm eating every 3 hours or so.
2. An excess of CALORIES makes you gain weight. Doesn't matter if those extra calories come from carbs, fat, or protein. Yea, it makes sense to eat less carbs at night, but that's only because you typically don't need the energy then...has nothing to do with the body storing fat.
Or live somewhere it's so hot, you spend all of your energy sweating and drinking slushies.
