Started the book by Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists). Only read the first few chapters but it's pretty decent. This book is kinda long though.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp_hSVEczLI

Finished this one about a month ago, very good i thought. Picked up the follow-up called "Under Wildwood". Just read the first chapter last night.

finished this over the weekend. It was good, not as good as the first but still very decent. Unfortunately the last book doesn't come out until February :(

Just finished Jay-Z's 'Decoded'. Not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but was right up my street - little bit art, little bit sociology, little bit history, little bit social justice... made me dust off a couple of CDs I hadn't listened to in a long time, and introduced me to some new and new-old music

I just finished "Dunces" a couple weeks ago. 10/10. Worth the praise IMO. I just started Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. Fiction is my wheelhouse so I'm going outside to try and expand my knowledge a little bit and I figured this is a good place to start. Taking it slow as to not get overwhelmed by statistical information but it's already happening.

Not to deflate your goal, but if you can't get through the book the documentary used to be available on Netflix. I watched it a couple years ago.

Also, I'd vote for Gaiman. I've got that one on my todo list as well.

I have to load up a few books onto my kindle before Christmas. I haven't touched it in over a year and I do NOT look forward to sorting my series' into the proper order on that thing. :fp:

I'm going to take a break from the Barsoom series (I have six left) and instead read another classic Mars book I'm embarrassed to say I've never read:

    Themartianchronicles.jpg

So, to date, I've read 33 books this year. This puts me well off-track from my 60-book goal for the year, but I'm going to keep chugging away at it ...

After far too long of a break, I finally returned to this book and finished it. Thank goodness for the long flight to Seattle!

The book was good, but you could tell Bradbury approached it from a short-story standpoint ... it was slightly disjointed, and I would have liked to see a bit more of a narrative structure.

I also finished this on my trip:

    010558854.jpeg

It was a good book, and one I'd recommend recent or impending high school graduates to read.

Right now, I'm about halfway through this:

    5901129-stephen-king-doctor-sleep.jpg

Pretty darn good read so far, and an appropriately done sequel (one I originally believed couldn't be pulled off).

So far this year, I've finished 36 books. If I can finish 40 by the end of 2013, I'll be pretty happy. :)

The best part about this was that it didn't feel like a sequel at all (I mean that earnestly). I too wasn't sure it could be done, and after reading it, I think he did it the only way it could've been done: by making it seem like a whole other story. Sure there were references throughout (Dick Halloran at the start, for instance), but I was glad to see he limited that. It would have been nearly impossible to capture the chaotic mood of the original, some 30+ years after it was written.

A little over half way through Elmore Leonard's "Tishomingo Blues"... the beginning was tough to get through, Seemed like a lot of storylines that didn't matter and the vagueness of Robert was throwing me... but now it is starting to come together... we will see how I feel when I finish it.

Recently I have finished Dennis Lehane's "Live By Night"... a good sequel to his "The Given Day". Curious if he will do a third to complete a trilogy.

Also picked up a new author to me, Marcus Sakey, read his "The Blade Itself". I liked it, was a different pace, where the good guy wasn't necessarily a good guy. Decent amount of twists and turns, looking forward to reading more of his books.

Also came across this website for those that like Mystery/Crime novels. I have found a few new authors and books using this website.

Next up I think I am going to pick up a George Pelecanos book... it's been a while...

I also really enjoyed both of those Lehane books & hope he writes the third!

Picked up this again, it will be my 3rd time trying to read it -- love Sanderson but it failed to grab me the first two times and I put it down for later. Pumped about 100 pages out quickly on the plane the other day so I think it "took" this time and I am going to enjoy the trilogy.

Having finished this book the other day, I totally agree with your assessment. I don't entirely remember The Shining because it's been years, but I do remember really enjoying it and loving Jack's descent into madness. How he captured Danny in Doctor Sleep was spot on, and a good continuation of the story (without needing the previous book).

    Now I'm on to this:

Finished this. Not bad. Good to know the universe can come from nothing, and things are the way they are because they are the way they are. :-|

Now I'm off to finish up my Burroughs John Carter series, picking up with book No. 6 in the series:

I'm hoping I can finish up the series by the end of the year ... only have six to read left!

Wow. I'm impressed. Even when Cooper has a good story (like this one) his writing is hard to take seriously. The only time I ever read one of his books was for an upper level English class.

Whew. Ok good, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I like the story so far, but it's hard to get into because so much of the narrative gets bogged down in (what can be) extraneous language. But I don't quite on books (even ones I don't enjoy), so we'll see where this takes me.
