How amazing is this guy? Part man part dolphin. Every time i watch he sets a new world record. I can't believe there isn't a thread saluting america's finest olympian.

Not yet he has a lot more work to do and it doesn't get any easier but ROCK ON with your bad self.

Impressive but I basically only care about the track and field portion of the olympics, in particular the sprinting events.

Same here but my 11 year old daughter is a competitive swimmer (she's won her share of gold medals) and she gets me going with this MP phenonomom, especially since he's from up the way in Baltimore.

I thought Ian Thrope was good in the water...this kid is a freak.

Give it 5 or so years and I reckon this could be one of the all time greatest athletes. In fact he's probably already in the top 20 or so. Incredible stuff

Its gonna be a close one. From memory his biggest 'risk' was the 4x100 wasnt it??? So the hardest one is done first???

I read somewhere that he wasnt only aiming for 8 bit also 8 world records!

Now thats fuggin good. The guy is a machine

ive been raving about the swimming the past two days in the oz thread - everyone has just been politely ignoring me :o the 4x100 relay was the one that blew me away

how old is this guy?? is style is amazingly effortless now - if he's got a few more years to build on it he's going to be a freak

He's only just starting. He'll break all types of records. Ian Thorpe will be about 1/2 of this fella me finks. He's fairly humble for a yank as well

he is at that - quite a few of them seem to be this time round. getting a bit drawn in to the gym routines this afternoon and they seem quite humble too.

dont think so - w/w swimming trials are pretty tight - its only when you walk out with hulk shoulders that things look bad ;)

it's so much fun watching him. they were talking about how last night he had like 20 minutes between events...and most people are worn out after just one - no one has the schedule he does.

said he has to eat like 7-8000 calories/day while training because he spends so much time in the pool.

I haven't watched this much of the Olympics in a long time, and generally I watch the swimming and track and field. This year the swimming is insane, and it's all b/c of Phelps.

Well the thing is Spitz set 7 World Records while winning 7 golds. Phelps is not even half way there yet.

The whole 8 gold thing is kind of unfair to Spitz too because the Olympics added an event the 50m freestyle that wasn't a medal event in 1972. And obviously, if it was an event, Spitz would have won that as well.

So even though Phelps is going for 8, I still consider him going to tie Spitz and not pass him.

    He is tremendous though.

Phelps is the best swimmer ever... for sure. I bet he wins eight golds and breaks eight world records.

The swimming has been great so far. I am swimming fan though... I swam my whole life, all the way through college.

True, it is annoying. I just avoid yahoo in prime time. ;)

Though, it's weird. I was talking to my friend from Denver last night during Phelps' race and he was still getting Beach Volleyball. So the East Coast and maybe the Central time zones are the only parts of the country getting the Olympics live. The rest of the cuntry is getting the Olympics on a tape delay even though Phelps' race would have been at 8:15 Mountain Time.
