    2008 Jim Edmonds = 1998 Gary Gaetti

    Huge catalyst thus far

Yeah, I was thinking that the other day. Without Gaetti, they would have never made the playoffs in '98. He was HUGE!
The Cubs would make the playoffs this year without Edmonds, but how far they got would be another story.

Glad to see them sweep! Hopefully Aramis will keep hitting the ball as well as he has because they are playing some great ball right now!!!
  • Even the most optimistic Cubs fans could never have imagined this. They are playing .800 baseball at home right now! That is fucking insane.

Keep it up guys, get over this injury bug, and try to put some solid distance inbetween 1st and .....2nd

It seemed, at the time, like a useless acquisition. The Cubs signed Gary Gaetti, who had been released by the Cardinals, on his 40th birthday, August 19, 1998. Gaetti had hit decently for St. Louis -- .265/.339/.454 -- but appeared mostly done, and had had only one really good year (1995) in the previous ten.

Suddenly, those ten years melted away. In 37 games as a Cub in August and September 1998, Gaetti hit .320/.397/.594 with 8 HR in 128 AB. He even looked less statue-like at third base than he had for the past several seasons.

And on the night of September 28, he broke up a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a home run after Henry Rodriguez had singled. Steve Trachsel still had a no-hitter going (despite six walks), although that was broken up in the 7th. For a while, it appeared the two runs would be all the Cubs would need to win the game and make the playoffs. In true Cub fashion, though, what appeared to be an easy 5-0 win into a nailbiter; the first four Giants reached base in the 9th inning and after a long fly ball by Barry Bonds put a scare into all of us who were there (it wound up caught for a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-3), Rod Beck was summoned to retire Jeff Kent and Joe Carter for the final two outs and the Cubs won what was at the time, the first winner-take-all game at Wrigley Field since Game 7 of the 1945 World Series.

The mistake then-GM Ed Lynch made was thinking that Gaetti (and the other oldsters who wheezed into the postseason with the 1998 Cubs) could do it again in 1999. Lynch kept most of that team together, and they played well for 1/3 of a season; after beating Arizona on June 8 they were 32-23 and a game out of first place. The next day, Lance Johnson got picked off first base to end the game, and that seemed to unravel the 1999 Cubs; they went 33-74 (yes, .308 ball, a 112-loss pace for a full season) the rest of the year. Gaetti hit .204/.260/.339 for the 1999 Cubs, and was released at season's end.

But for about five weeks, and especially in the 1998 tiebreaker game, Gary Gaetti was a Cub hero.

I was watching the Brewers-Atlanta game earlier tonight, and they ran a few interesting stats. The first was that the 3 best teams in the NL reside in the Central Division (CC, StL, and Mil) and are each playing pretty good ball right now, though the Cards are kinda scuffling. However, the ridiculous two stats they ran were the fact that the Cubs were 32-8 at home for the year, which as you said, is .800. BUT against the Brewers they are 2-4 in two home series.

I'm not sure the bigger accomplishment, the team that is 30-4 (probably 5 after tonight), or that a good team (usually a nemesis squad is like the Pirates or Nats) in the Brewers represents 50% of the Cubs home losses. As a Brewer fan you probably know where I sit on this one, as I suspect, as a Cubs fan, you sit elsewhere.

Guess same reason to pull Edmonds in favor of Murton in the 8th. The old lefty-right matchup. I didn't agree with it with Edmonds, cause the guy has been so clutch, and just hit a 3 run shot the inning before. Not sure if it would have mattered between Hank White or Eric Patterson, that closer loaded the bases, and then made the next 3 hitters look blind.

Whats up with batting Theriot 8th? He's leading the team in average. I think its a waste.

Yes, I've mentioned before that the Cubs don't exactly have a good record against the Brewers or Cardinals. But as you said, they are both good teams, and they are both divisional rivals. Can't win them all man. Plus its a long season, I doubt many teams could pull off an 800 winning percentage at home against all teams. But its certainly not like the Cubs have beefed up on all bad teams. They've swept teams like the Dbacks, Braves, Dodgers, Mets, Sox, etc. And actually, I don't think they've played the Nats at home yet, but I could be wrong. Pretty sure Cubs lost 2 out of 3 from the Nats on the road
  • Good solid outing by Lilly last night, thats what the pen needed, badly. Cubs are so lucky they have DeRosa, you can slot that guy in almost anywhere on the field. He came through big time with Aram out.

Sucks when we get a good outing by Marquis and lose. Gotta get one of these next two, hopefully both.

Sucks even more that the Cubs lost by 1, while SF stole fucking home in the 1st.

The Good news is Wood is looking as great as ever.

If the Cubs can make it to the break with around a three game lead then I think they'll bring it home. I know that probably sounds strange, but it seems like a three-game cushion over the Cards (or the Brewers) will be just enough to keep them at bay. I don't think we've seen just yet how good this Cub team really is.

My fingers are crossed for an all Chi-town Fall Classic. I'd definitely have to make the drive ($6.00 gas and all) for a Southside/Northside matchup.

It would be the best World Series matchup ever (or at least the most exciting matchup ever).

I'm a longtime Cubs fan from growing up watching the games on WGN. I went to the Cubs/Braves playoff series back in 2003 at Turner Field when Wood had the two-run, go ahead double in game one. Turner Field was literally half full with Cubs fans. The place was rocking that night. I'd love to make a playoff game (preferably a World Series game) at Wrigleyville.

Yeah, it would be simply insane!! It might be a bit scary depending on what bar you were at :D, but it would be fun nonetheless. If it were to ever happen it may be one of the biggest events in the history of all sports.

Oh well, still 2.5 game lead. Need to win tomorrow though!

Kerry Wood is still the man.

  • Mother fucker.

I thought we had that one when it was 2 outs. Wood can't ever walk the first 2 batters in the inning. That spells disaster.

At least win tomorrow...to take the series.

Oh well...at least Marmol pitched OK today.

Tough L. You just can't walk two batters to start off an inning and not expect it to bite you. Need to get this one today.

But now that the Brew Crew have CC, time for Hendry to make a deal.

Agree. Glad we took 2/3 but it should have been a sweep, I'll still take 2/3 though. Glad we could finally win a big road series. Sucks that the Crew got CC without having to give up a single current major league player (barring the player to be named isn't one). I'm gonna hear about all day at work tomorrow from the lame Brewers fans up here. Still in 1st though!! We all know Hendry's gonna make a deal, it's just what one is it gonna be.

Yeah, if he pitches as normal he'll win maybe another 7-8 games TOPS...and that's if he pitches out of his mind with an average offensive team.
The Cubs need not worry, but I do think they should try to tie up loose ends.
  • So now that CC is out of the running, what other big name pitchers will Hendry target?

I think the main targets would be Harden, Roy Halladay, Randy Wolf, and AJ Burnett.

Don't know if the Cubs have enough to get Halladay or Harden, but I would prefer Burnett in the second tier of guys.

Do any of you Cubs fans know where I can get a pair of tix for the 8/2/08 game? We will be in town for Lollapalooza, and of course, I need to attend a baseball game in every city I visit!

Not looking for Stubhub or other broker sites, but I am willing to pay over face.

    Thanks!

Reminiscent of ass raping the Pirates in 2003 getting Lofton, Ramirez and Randall Simon for Bobby Hill and guys who were even bigger scrubs than Hill!

Harden supposed to start Friday or Saturday. With the allstar break, Lou can flip his rotation many different ways for the 2nd half. I think they've got Mon-Thursday off, but Z and Demp are both in the allstar game, so we'll see. But it definitely makes the most sense to have Harden 2nd followed by Demp and Lilly.

For now I'd go with Marquis as the 5th, if just to have another lefty, Marshall, in the pen. But the second Marquis starts to suck like the end of last year, time for him to fuck off.

Great trade barring Harden stays healthy. I'll miss Gallagher a little, but so long Murton and Patterson. Patterson did show some promise in the Sox series at Wrigley but played horrible in the series on the south side, plus he's not great at showing up on time.
