I already have had 2 Guinness today :D unfortunately back at work, but looking forward till 4:30... :)

All those seem like a good enough reason to celebrate St Paddy's Day.

i think it depends on the catholic community and family what saints get more *focus*....st. gennerro gets a lotta love from NYC. there's a 'saint's day' EVERY day i believe, and for those who are truly that religiously observant, could 'celebrate' them all. just like modern-day 'celebrities'...i guess some saints get/got more recognition/fame than others. i have relatives who celebrate st. nicholas's day - and no, that's NOT christmas. i know the nuns in my former school celebrated st. joseph's day in a BIG way b/c they were josephites, and i too, italian/catholic...had never heard of it until then. so many saints...so little time.;)

That's weird. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school for 8 years, my mom does the readings at 10:30 mass every Sunday, I grew up in a big Italian community ... and never once have I heard of, let alone celebrated St. Joseph's Day.

Is the community Sicilian? Many of the people in my neighborhood are so maybe that's why you never celebrated it.

I think you're probably right. It's funny though I remember the nuns teaching us about St. Joseph's Day before ever teaching us about St. Patrick's Day.

We used to have a parade down here for the day and Italian Market would have a have huge festival.

St. Patrick's Day is a watered down/liquored up excuse to party for most...but it's an excuse for my family to get together and celebrate our Irish-American heritage. my grandma cooks for about 50, and there's not an ounce of green beer in the house...but the homemade irish cream is a-flowin'.

p.s. this year, the feast of st. patrick got trumped by holy week...so the church isn't even celebrating today.

I have family in both Northern Italy and Sicily. St. Joseph is sicilian affair - He is their Patron Saint and is celebrated a lot more there than in Northern Italy. Not sure of the story about St. Joseph (something about a drought, I think), but definitely a Sicilian thing to start with.

Everyone wears red sort of how everyone wears green on St. Patty's Day.

Obviously wine is involved, but because St. Joseph's Day traditionally falls during Lent, it's a meatless dinner, but lots of fish, minestrone soup, pasta with breadcrumbs symbolizing sawdust because he was a carpenter, St. Joseph's cakes and veggies.

In Ireland, its a pretty big thing. The kids get a break from school, get dressed in the best and go to the parades (which there are hundreds of, by the way). For me, t'was nothing religious about it. Also, Paddys Day isn't especially about drink - we get just as excited about other Bank Holiday weekends where we have the Monday off work and can have a few on Sun night. So, Easter, May weekend, August weekend, Xmas - we all drink as much then, its in our culture.

Other countries have just blown it totally out of proportion.

Isn't it the day to honor the Patron Saint of Ireland? I mean it's not entirely supposed to be about drinking, we do have a big parade here, and there's a service at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

absolutely. given our *melting pot* roots...i personally think where the 'going overboard' stems from. everyone wants to celebrate, pay homage to their ancestry/heritage.....take pride in their family's 'old country' as it were. i think we americans do that for almost ALL culturally-centered holidays. hell, the puerto rican day parade in NY has reeached epic proportions, and for me anyway...that is a rather 'new' holiday. cinco de mayo, as mentioned, has also grown quite *big* here, etc. i think as more and more immigrants from various countries/cultures make their home somewhere new, all these traditions/holidays take new importance/significance to those who are a part of the heritage.

  • Is it just another excuse to drink?

It's just about some dude who spread christianity to a pagan island in Europe.

I don't think I've ever done anything to acknowledge it.

    it's fun!

I see it as a day to appreciate irish culture and history in the U.S.
