Is it just another excuse to drink?

It's just about some dude who spread christianity to a pagan island in Europe.

I don't think I've ever done anything to acknowledge it.

It's an excuse to drink much as Cinco De Mayo is. I mean everyone thinks Cinco De Mayo is Mexican Independence Day even though that day is really on September 16th.

Cinco De Mayo commemorates Mexico beating France in a battle. Now if every country had a holiday for defeating France on the battlefield, we'd never stop drinking. ;)

funny, cinco de mayo first sprang to my mind when viewing the first post as well, along with fat tuesday, etc.

to me, it's simply called living. we as humans *need* things to mark time, to celelbrate, to enjoy. religion was always a HUGE part of that process.....thus how i think all of *that* kinda stuff started.

Thats what a figured. In Ireland, its a perfectly acceptable holiday.. here it seems like leprechauns, silly t-shirts about kissing me, clovers and another excuse for alcoholism.

It's like another Hallmark holiday in the U.S.

I'm 1/4 Irish and I'm going to drink the shit outta some Guiness tonight!

Why? Because I like to drink, and any excuse to do so will be taken advantage of!

i, for one, love celebrating my irish roots. :D
the grandmother i was closest to was 100% irish... st. patty's day was always a big event, she'd be decked out in her green carnation and pretty much for the whole month of march we'd be listening to irish music.
of course now, sure, i use it as an excuse to drink all day :) .... but i still listen to my irish music and bake green cupcakes and wear my green....

    seriously, what's the problem?
it ain't your thing....no one forces you to participate. tis another monday for me, and i work in manhattan. sure it causes congestion, traffic delays, etc....but it's people having FUN. damn, wtf is wrong with that?

EVERY holiday has it's kitsch, it's traditions, most rooted in nationalism and/or religion, and many merely participate in the secular side of things. so fuickin' what? when do so many become such party poopers? just about EVERY holiday someone has to bitch and moan about it on this board. sheesh. it's ONE day a year....let all enjoy if thatey so desire without all being so pissy about it. damn.....:p

btw - as i mentioned eariler, i don't even LIKE st. patty's really, and i AM a wee bit irish, but none the less....i say any excuse for people to have fun and enjoy themselves, good for them.

i also saw MANy people this AM, dressed in fun st. patty's day garb, but handling out pamphlets about the TRUE meaning of the holiday...so good on them......

Well, there are two big Catholic holidays this week. Obviously St. Patrick's Day where everyone is Irish and drinks. ;) And the lesser known St. Joseph's Day which is a big Italian American holiday on the 19th. I'll be home celebrating St. Joseph's Day with my family and having the all the traditional foods and sharing stories and breaking out the wine.

I guess, because I'm only slightly Irish and grew up in mainly Italian South Philly, St. Joseph's Day has always been a bigger holiday for me than St. Patrick's Day.

Plus everyone loves St. Joseph's Day cakes:

St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland, thus he is celebrated in Ireland and also by the Irish all over the world (if they wish to). It's not really an overall 'christian/catholic' holiday but a 'country' day. The English have St. George's day. They're not celebrating the Saint in a church way, but the Patron of the country.

Why would you acknowledge this celebration if it is not part of your heritage (or if it is, it's too distant of a heritage and can't be bothered)? Perfectly understandable.

    Also, it's sweet the american's say St. Patty's... that's a girl's name **giggles**

That's weird. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school for 8 years, my mom does the readings at 10:30 mass every Sunday, I grew up in a big Italian community ... and never once have I heard of, let alone celebrated St. Joseph's Day.
