Thanks so much for the advice, I will take it. My wife and I discussed pound/rescue last night and agreed we want to look closely at that.

    Thanks!

Dog lovers - looking for opinions. (Reading up on it as well...)

Getting a dog sometime in 2013. I had a number of dogs in the past (partial to labs) but have not had a dog in 15 years.

Buying a new house next week, move in the week after.
Finally have a backyard and plenty of space inside for a dog again.
8 year old nephew lives with us, very rambunctious.
South Jersey - not too cold or too much snow but gets hot/humid in summer.
Dog will get standard amount of exercise but much of the time will be leash walking.
Can run around in the back yard, decent size...pool w/o a fence so needs to be ok with water.
I dont want the coat to be a long daily brushing as I know my nephew & wife wont keep up....
    (Plus the mess inside.)
    Medium size preferred.

Ideas we are good with so far:
    German Pinscher
    Black Lab
    Vizsla

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
I'd probably suggest a pound puppy or rescue but if you want to go with a certain breed, do what you're doing here and ask questions. Of the breeds you mentioned, I only know about labs and they tend to be great with kids. But for any of those breeds, there should be a local club and more importantly a rescue group. Talk to them, especially the rescue groups, and learn about the breed's behavior and suitability for your situation. They'll be able to tell you what to expect and any kinds of problem traits or behaviors.

Good luck! Having a dog is one of the things that makes life complete!

Edit: OK, a quick search tells me that the Vizsla may not be the best breed for you. Apparently they need LOTS of vigorous excercise. http://www.petfinder.com/dog-breeds/Vizsla

    Adopting a lab: http://adopt-a-labrador-retriever.adoptapet.com/
    or a German pinscher: http://www.adoptapet.com/s/adopt-a-german-pinscher

If you haven't had a dog for many years, I'd suggest adopting an adult dog. Puppies are cute and a lot of fun but they are also a lot of work. Rescues have many adult dogs that can make good pets. They may have been surrendered to the rescue because the owners had financial hardships or were forced to move. Not necessarily problem dogs. The rescue group can tell you a lot about the individual dog.

My vet says the perfect age to adopt a dog is 9 mos. to a year old. You will have missed the early puppy problems (but not 100% ) but the dog will still be young and trainable.

My Penny is a rescue and she is some kind of special dog! So I'm very sold on rescue.

    Yes rescue...

We have rescued many but I have only been to animal control once, that was for our Charlie.
It can more than break your heart, be prepared. So many faces. So much hope,
not enough love to go around. Too few lucky ones.

Bless your heart for saving one.

    HEY GUYS

...it's been a while. 8-) (holy shit, have things changed... first off, I only remembered NOW to renew my 10c - 3 days just in time, and I didn't even know how to do it!!)

Only when I remembered I had to renew did I realise that I haven't checked in to this thread (the only thread worth comin' back to these days!). And only then did I remember I haven't filled you in on the latest developments....

I flew across province after talking to a shelter in Canmore, Alberta. This shelter finds stray dogs from first nations reservations and rehabilitates them for adoption. This little one and her sisters were found starving and freezing in the snow (for those of you who don't know, Canmore Alberta is in the Rocky Mountains). Well the shelter was a bit disorganized (painfully disorganized!) but long story short I got it sorted out in end and this was the result:

We named her Yuki-ko (it means snow child in Japanese) - we call her Yuki for short.

(waiting patiently to get off the plane after landing in Vancouver...she's a west coast doggie now :))
I met her sister too, who was the runt, it broke my heart that I couldn't take them both. Sometimes I tell Yuki i should have taken her sister... Because, goddamn, Yuki is a pain in the ass. Obviously it is a hard transition after putting down a dog, but putting down an amazinglyfuckingfantastic dog and getting a puppy within a year is .......something else. But we love her :)

Speaking of, this week was the 1 year anniversary of losing Sammi. :(
