you are a fucking retard. buying a championship like the yankees means paying crazy amounts to FREE AGENTS. Not trading for good players. Trading is part of the game! The celtics are going to stomp all over the lakers. Celts in 6.

Seriously, if you are too dumb to see just a little past the obvious, please do not post. Let me educate you. The Celtics traded 10, yes 10, players for Ray Allen and Garnett. The NBA has salary cap considerations, so you don't see money being thrown around like you do in baseball. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, its just more complicated. Sometimes buying a championship takes on another form, like this one.

Trading is part of the game? How many times do you see 10 for 2?

Oh god, I probably just spent the last 3 minutes arguing with a bandwagoner...

Moderators, can I have those 3 minutes back?

Its actually a little disgusting how the Celtics managed to get to the finals. They are trying desperatly to buy a championship because their once proud franchise has been irrelevant for over 20 years. If you were born a Celtics fan, fine. If you jumped on the bandbagon this year, you should be ashamed of yourself. Like Kobe or not you have to admire what the Lakers have done, 60% of their team was drafted by the Lakers. This is what professional sports should be about: scouting, drafting and developing young talent, not trading the farm for an attempt at a championship. And don't get me started on Sam Cassell. So disgusting.

Lets Go Lakers!!

Funny how when the Celtics makes trades to improve their team and they somehow appear to be buying a championship. While the Lakers do the same thing making a trade to improve themselves and i don't hear you commenting that they're buying a championship also.

Teams do this ALL the time they would be foolish not too. Stick to rooting for your team and we'll see where this series goes.

My head hurts. Find a rationale, no matter how wrong it is and just go with it. It matches the way you feel so it must be right.

Oh, and btw? The Celtics crushed your Bynum Lakers twice. So God only knows why you'd want to bring that incarnation up.

The Celtics traded their assets and picks for their 2 stars. That's not buying anything. (At least Minny got something of value in return unlike Memphis did in that Hi-Jacking.)

The Celtics had a 31-10 road record this year. They have a 2-7 road record in the playoffs. What do you think the moral of this story is?

That they've won 2 of the last 3 on the road? Against the same team that defeated the Lakers the last time they made the Finals? 2-7 doesn't mean shit.

I'm NOT a bandwagoner, and i've been waiting for this a long time. I'll agree, the Lakers are red-hot, but Boston is hitting form at the right time. It's going to be a great series.

I see you dropped the rest of your irrational premise.

Yes the Celtics are 2-7 on the road. However they took 2 in Detroit, and they just need to win at home anyways.

Homecourt advantage.

I see you dropped the rest of your irrational premise.

What part was irrational again? The whole "Celtics are trying to buy a championship" plus the Gasol trade? This is getting tiring, please do your homework before you post. I consider trading 10 players for 2 All Stars an attempt at buying a championship. The Gasol trade looks similar to the untrained eye but you do a tad of investigation and you reveal that the Lakers made the trade to fill an immediate hole left by Bynum's injury. If Bynum does not get hurt then the Lakers probably do not make that trade. Was the trade fair? I'm not gonna lie, it was a pretty lopsided trade, but no one put a gun to the Grizzlies GM's head. You can argue til the year 3000 about conspiracies and Jerry West's involvement in the trade, but its still all speculation. The Lakers making that deal was a no brainer, and any GM with half a brain makes that trade. The Celtics moves? I'm not sure every GM does those trades, a 10 for 2? Maybe if you have a surplus of crappy players and zero ability to scout and draft talent, then yes you make those trades.

OK, all this talk about the Celtics and Lakers moves this past off season and mid season and so far no talk about the actual series. Here's my pick. Brace yourselves, its a shocker:

Lakers in 6!!

But, it will be a close series. I certainly see many scenarios in which the Celtics win. The Lakers interior defense worries me, but on the bright side, if the Lakers can handle Tony parker and Manu then the Celtics should be of no concern. If the Lakers players not named Kobe can hit 45% or more of their shots and Pau is as aggresive on the offensive rebounds in this series then it will be a quick series. But the biggest key is Odom. When he plays well the Lakers will blow you out. When he doesn't, its a dog fight.

Haha. Lots of trash talking here. I love it. Been a Laker fan my whole life and I live in LA. This is going to be fun.

Beating the Celtics for the championship brings a lot more pleasure than beating Indiana, etc.

That 2-3-2 series is a big burden for the Celtics to carry. One slip-up and it's off to LA for 3 games tied 1-1. At that point, look out.

Should be a great series. Lakers in 5.

I will concede those two games in November and December of 2007.

It could end up hurting the Celtics that they beat the Lakers so handily before the team found itself. The Lakers may feed off the knowledge that they have to prove a point here. We'll see, but it could be an interesting Game 1. I can't wait.

Irrationality is letting your feelings make a statement of fact that is completely off base. You're free to hate the Celts, but just admit you don't like the way they did it, or that they were lucky in getting 2 trade partners who needed that talent and the reason they had such talent was so many crap seasons.

These were the trades. The Celtics could make them because they had good young talent that they developed. You talk about reseacrh, here it is.

Garnett Trade

Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 first round draft pick (top three protected) and a return of Minnesota's conditional first round draft pick previously obtained in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade. ( http://www.nba.com/celtics/news/press073107-garnett.html )

So let's see that's Al Jefferson of the 21.0 Points Per Game, the 11.1 Rebounds. Ryan Gomes 12.6 Points Per Game, 5.6 Rebounds. Gerald Green who admittedly was raw but the Celtics gave him up because Minny wanted him. Theo Ratliff was an expiring contract and that is just good business on both sides. Sebastian Telfair 9.3 Points Per Game, 5.9 Assists Per Game.

So that's five players, 4 of which were actually decent players. Then there are 2 draft picks, 1 of which was a good pick. (Unlike the Lakers picks in the Gasol trade)

I advise you to study up, because if you are thinking that that's being bought then every exchange of players is a purchase. That was a high price for a very good player. Nothing untoward about that.

The Allen Trade The Allen Trade.

The Boston Celtics acquired guard Ray Allen from the Seattle Supersonics on Thursday night for Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak and the rights to the 2007 NBA Draft's No. 5 overall pick -- Georgetown forward Jeff Green. Boston also gets the rights to the Sonics' 35th pick -- LSU's Glen Davis. ( http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2007/news/story?id=2920183 )

Please notice that the Celtics got 2 players in this deal.

So that's Delonte West 8.3 Points Per Game, 3.8 Assists Per Game. Wally Szczerbiak 11.5 Points Per Game, 2.9 rebounds. Plus the #5 Pick in the draft which was used for Jeff Green of the 10.5 Points Per Game, 4.7 Rebounds as a Rookie.

In Return the Celtics also got Big Baby Davis.

So that's 7 Players and three Draft Picks, or 10 players if you prefer it that way. 10 for 3 Not 2.

They gave up assets they had that they acquired legally and not through Cash. At what point is that buying? They were a good young team that wanted to win sooner so they traded their younger players to build around Paul Pierce.

Hate it all you want, but that's just good work by the Front Office.

Now look at the Gasol trade.

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired forward Pau Gasol in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. The Lakers will also receive the Grizzlies second round draft choice in 2010. In exchange Memphis will receive forward Kwame Brown, guard Javaris Crittenton, guard Aaron McKie (who the Lakers signed earlier today), the draft rights to Marc Gasol and first round picks in 2008 and 2010.

Looks like that's 6 players for 2. OMG I think the Lakers may have bought Pau Gasol!!!
9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.

Looks like that's 6 players for 2. OMG I think the Lakers may have bought Pau Gasol!!!

I think we are getting mixed up. I am not arguing that the Celtics didn't trade away alot in return for two all stars. I agree with you. They did trade away a lot of seemingly talented, unproven young players for a chance to win now. Thats the problem I have. They sold the farm for now. No, it wasn't cash that they used to acquire Garnett and Allen, but trading 10 young, unproven players for older but proven allstars is "buying a championship" in my book. It may look different but the intention is the same. Thats not good GM'ing, anyone could have predicted that a team with Allen and Garnett is going to be good. I think a lot of GMs if they had Allen or Garnett would have jumped at the offers the Celtics gave them. The Celtics needed a MAJOR MAJOR overhaul to get to the point they are in now. The Lakers were doing OK before Gasol. Of course adding him took them to a whole new level.

To clarify the Gasol trade: McKie was trade fodder. He was an assistant coach somewhere and the Lakers signed him THAT DAY so the league would approve the trade. Kwame Brown? Any GM in the league would have traded him for a bag of Doritos. I am being serious, he stunk. He was not even one of the Lakers top 10 players. I examined the list of players you provided that the Celtics traded away and none stood out as obvious lemons like Kwame. So in my opinion, the Gasol trade was really 4 for 2.

How would you feel if the Yankees traded four very good minor leaguers for say Chipper Jones this year? You'd say "The Yankees are trying to buy a championship." When a trade gets to laughable proportions like 10 for 3 (I stand corrected) with an obvious intent to win NOW, its called "BUYING A CHAMPIONSHIP." Dude, just call it what it is and we can get on to actually talking about the series.

OIC....you'd rather see them stay below 500 and you'd be comfortable with that. Well you can go right ahead, I'd rather them make an effort to make something of this team even if it's for a short window. Nothing is gauranteed in this game Kobe could have a career ending injury next year or at any time. If you have the chance to make something of your team then make it while you can.

Look at the excitement it has brought back to Celtic basketball and even if they fall short I'd make the moves a million times over. You can call it what you want buying/selling their souls to the devil I don't care.

We shall see how it turns out cause one thing I know my patient's friend Red Auerbach will be watching for sure. Red was one hell of a card player as he was a coach tooo.

The Lakers appear to have the advantage with a mega star in Kobe and the added players the Lakers have. The pressure is on the Celtics but it can be done and hopefully it will be done.

Let's git it on Mean Green!

As the day has gone on, I have become more and more worried about tomorrow. I don't like that the so called experts are picking the Lakers. I'd rather be an underdog. The Celtics won 66 games and have home court. The Lakers are the underdogs. There. I feel better now.

Go Lakers.

• This should be a fun series. I cannot wait until tonight. The town is buzzing. I am even wearing green today. (Those who know me know that I do not wear green for several reasons)

The Celtics need to maxim ize their advantages. Rebounding, Defense, and a free flowing attack. The Lakers aren't the only ones who like to pass the ball a lot.

Celtics in 6.

Go Green and Gold put the ball in the goal! Woo-hoo!

Did I just sound like a chic who stumbled upon a sports thread, or what?

Seriously, I'm not sure who I might start rooting for as this series progresses. I almost always side with the underdog, so maybe I'll cheer for whoever loses tonight...

Green and Gold covers both your bases.

Seriously, go with the Lakers. There are enough band wagon fans following Boston teams right now.

Right. Exactly.

Damn, this home court thing is killing me. If the Lakers had home court, it would be all but over. As it is, this will be a very tough championship. Go Lakers!

• I still think the LA fans are too cocky. The Celtics dominated the West this year. Including getting wins out west while teams were making a playoff push.

This thing goes at least 6 and I think teh Celtics shock the bandwagon laker fans.
9/7/98, 8/3/00, 9/4/00, 4/15/03, 7/1/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 5/24/06, 5/25/06, 6/17/08, 6/22/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 5/17/10, 10/15/13, 10/16/13.
• It pisses me off when people call me a bandwagon jumper, or a fairweather Celtics fan... not that any of you have, but it has happened.

I got into basketball in 1992, and have been a Celtics fan ever since. I missed the Larry Bird era, but have seen enough since to feel like i was there.

I have a crapload of Celtics stuff, from jerseys (2) to shorts, to caps (3), to warm up tops, shirts (4)...

I have an old Boston Garden model, Celtics beer holder, beer mugs, beer glasses, mouse pad, etc...

Last Christmas i got the DVD box set, the complete Boston Celtics History..

I did a report back in High School on 'The Ghosts of Celtics Past' with full pages on all the greats, Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, both Jones boys, KC and Sam, Sharman, Dave Cowens, Tommy H, DJ, Bird, McHale, Parish, Ainge...

This has been a rough 16 years. I remember when Paul Pierce and 'Toine brought the C's back from 21 down (at 3/4 time) against the Nets in the playoffs a few years back, i was in Australia watching it, and thought they were done.... That's been about the only highlight... until now.

Until now. Been waiting for this a looong time, and it's here. And i love it.

I'm going to be at a Sports bar in Burbank from about 3pm onwards, dressed from head to toe in Green.... can't wait!!
