yeah i thought this was a pretty terrible movie. unfortunately, it was just sad enough that i couldnt laugh at how bad it was. monster was kind of disappointing/uncreative, but that's all i'll say. Some people I saw it with liked it, though, so make up your own mind

pretty much seems to be the case...some like it others hate it.

i'm not expecting a mind blowing experience when i go to see it today...just a good flick....

shouldn't really expect much from a movie released in january.

saw an 11:20 this morning and the theater was pretty damn full for a saturday morning movie.

first, monster movies (much like zombie movies) are either something you're into or your not. personally, i thought the movie was very entertaining and i got what i expected out of it, which was a good, "monster destroys a city" movie.

i avoided all possible spoilers as much as i could and went into the movie not having any solid idea about what the monster/creature looked like (although i obviously had my own ideas).

i would give cloverfield 3 out of 4 stars and would highly recommend seeing it in the theater if the previews look good or even half decent to you.

so you didn't get into all the viral marketing?

i heard that explains a lot...

  • Is it worth seeing? Is it comparable to anything we've seen before?
    "It's all happening"
  • i gotta say i disliked it for the most part. you get a few lightning fast shots of something cool, then about ten minutes of hearing pretty people whine while the camera shakes violenty. The whole shaky cam gimmick sucked.

    dissappointed. at least its short
  • oh and by the way. the cameraman is the most annoying character since Jar Jar.

not really, although i've heard that the viral marketing didn't explain much of anything.

Just got back from watching Cloverfield and I thought it was a great movie. I can understand if this type of movie, monster movies, are not your favorite genre, but to say that the movie was lame is just stupid. The movie was anything but. I enjoyed the fact that it was centered on the characters and their struggle to escape the city instead of it just being about the monster. Well done and the monster was pretty fucking cool.

    i heard the exact opposite.

i'm not sure if this was brought up in the movie...but the party was for Rob who was leaving for Japan to join the Tagruato company...

Tagruato is responsible for multiple drilling sites...one being not too far off the coast from New York city...

there were these "news reports" released of that particular station collapsing or being taken down...if you look close you can see something swimming away...

its thought that the drilling was responsible for disrupting the monster...

then theres the whole Slusho, Tidowave marketing...i just couldn't keep up with it all.

anyway, i didn't get to see it last night and i stayed home to watch a Death Wish marathon...

I really liked the movie. It was very intense althought the movie was pretty short. The shaky camera kinda made me sick. My only complaint would be the lenght of the movie. I thought the monster was pretty awesome. If the movie wasn't shown in first person view it probably wouldn't have been good.
  • I was annoyed with the obviously similarities with 9/11. I swear i've seen some of those exact same scenes in news footage. We all know what dust clouds from falling buildings and people running through the streets of manhatten looks like. Couldn't this have been set in LA?

Other than that it was an alright movie. More about the people and less about the awesome monster.

    yes, yes I am :p

I just thought it was over-hyped for a pretty standard movie.

Also, there was no explanation... when will film makers realise that this isn't 'artistic licence', it doesn't make for a striking ending or make a good cliff hanger.... it's is just irritating.... really feckin irritating...

tbh, I comatosed half way through and put the world to rights in my own mind... not a good sign...

oh, and the monster was shite.

    *shakes head* so disappointed....

    just my opinion :D

I thought some parts were funny too - I get great amusement out of watching people being wobbly and bleeding to death, in the same way I found it funny the way people fell off the ship in Titanic!

Also, storyline... meh. If "the world was ending", fucked if I'd go rescue anyone, I'd be with the black dudes wreckin the place :D

And yeah, the monster itself was ok, but it did just randomly plonk itself in the middle of New York without anyone noticing. Dammit... now you got me thinkin about it!

  • Bad acting, awful dialogue, predictable story, the middle bit was alright, but the beginning and the end were crapola.

see!! it just 'appeared' and no one asked any questions!

    FAIL!!

I think the monster concept was poor as well, was it an alien? was it a 'monster'? was it a dinosaur type creature?! It was like a bastard hybrid of the stereotypical ideas of all three, like they couldn't make up their minds what they wanted to ravage NY... ie. shite.

I think I was the only person in our screen actually laughing at the death scenes too... *looks shifty*

    why is it called Cloverfield?
Cloverfield is the name of a street that JJ Abrams has some production offices on. As for the 'why', so many fans used the name more than the other dummy names so they just went with it.

haha, that was me too. It didn't help that most of the characters were so damn smug and annoying that I couldn't care less if they were eaten alive!

i am very neutral on this movie. didn't like it, but didn't hate it.

outside of the whole monster attack plot, there were some scenes that were so unrealistic (ie: the apartment scene at the end. come on now, you are not going in that building).
  • haha, that was me too. It didn't help that most of the characters were so damn smug and annoying that I couldn't care less if they were eaten alive!

see, my bitch was the lack of sensibility and REALITY... who really would've gone into THAT building?! yep, no one in their right mind, yet in they jogged.... And everyone KNOWS you shouldn't pull out the offending sharp object in an impaling, due to a niggley little thing called BLEEDING TO DEATH... oh but guess what?! they pulled it out anyways!! *sarcastic slow round of applause*
I felt almost as cheated as I did watching Hostel and Wolf Creek... However, I did laugh, loudly, when the spike was removed and when that guy slumped dead infront of the camera... I couldn't help it!! :o

The movie was over-hyped and weak.

Saw it last night, and overall I liked the movie, but I get what you guys are saying. They also wouldn't have survived the helo crash.
My biggest beef going into it was that I didn't think they'd show the monster other than what you see in the trailers, but I was pleasantly surprised.

edit - I was getting sick by the end. And the word 'Rob' was annoyingly overused...

...so were "oh god", "jesus christ", "run" and "oh fuck". I'd love to be getting eaten by a monster just so I could scream at the sky "Ed Vedder god... why have you done this to meeeeeee?!"

    I liked it.
