We're into Season Four now and the wife is approaching Rabid Fan Status. She couldn't wait to tell me when she found out that Joss has been writing a Season Eight comic book. Yeah, she's a little behind in the news category, but I couldn't squash her enthusiasm by letting on...
We watched Beer Bad earlier this week and I couldn't help but laugh out loud before some of the dialogue, especially Willow's in several cases. I knew it was coming and couldn't hold back:
Giles: I can't believe you served Buffy that beer. Xander: I didn't know it was evil. Giles: You knew it was beer. Xander: Well, excuse me, Mr. 'I spent the sixties in an electric-kool-aid-funky-Satan groove.' Giles: It was the early seventies and you should know better.
Buffy: I'm suffering the afterness of a bad night of... badness. Willow: You didn't. Not with Parker again. Buffy: No. with four really smart guys. Willow: Four? Oh... ow. Oh, Buffy, are you OK? Do you want to talk about it? Buffy: I went to see Xander. Then I saw Parker. Then came... beer. Willow: And then group sex? Buffy: Pffft... gutterface. No! Just lots and lots of beer.
And the episode ends with Buffy clubbing Parker over the head all cavewoman-style. Masterful!

I've always had issues with that whole, "I have no breath." line of Angel's. We've seen him breathing! Spike smokes! Maybe he doesn't HAVE to breath, but he obviously CAN! lol
I was really struck by this when I saw teh episode recently where Darla sires ( or is that dams) Angel.. When he first rises, it is frosty, and both Angel's and Darla's breath is smoking in the cold. Angel is gulping huge breaths, and Darla is glowing. So they are healthy vamps at least.

I was a die-hard when I started watching, which was during the second season. I've met Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Christophe Beck (who did the score for the first... three? four? seasons) and have gone on a "tour" of some of the locations also. I saw Four Star Mary (the band behind 'Dingoes Ate My Baby'), and if you get the chance go see them! I also saw Velvet Chain, who were in the ep "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date", and I also met Todd Babcock, who played Tom in the episode "Reptile Boy".
My daughter, Maggie, still loves the episode "Killed by Death" from the second season, and Zachary's favorite is "The Zeppo" from the third season. I still absolutely LOVE the eps "Prophecy Girl", "When She Was Bad", and "Becoming 1 & 2".....
I could go on and on and on, but Maggie has asked for me to put in... guess which one? "Killed By Death". Yay?
and quotes? I think Buffy was one of the most quotable series EVER!
Angel.... wait, I know the ep that was my favorite...it's the one where Loren gets some kind of spell or something for Cordy to get her memory back, and everyone is all drugged up... it was a fanTABulous episode!!! Of course, I loved the ep where Angel got turned into a puppet *snerk*

I'd agree with this, but I have to say that I really enjoyed Glory and Season Five enough to tie it in the #2 spot.
The Mayor was far and away the best of the Big Bads.
.
Memphis 1994 New Orleans 1995 Fort Lauderdale 1996 Atlanta & Birmingham 1998 New Orleans 2000 Tampa 2003 Kissimmee 2004 New York City (x 2) 2008 East Troy (x 2) 2011 Chicago & New Orleans 2013 Hampton, Raleigh, Boston 2016 Baltimore2020 Louisville 2022 Philadelphia & Baltimore 2024
The Mayor was far and away the best of the Big Bads.
The Mayor was most excellent. His character was incredibly complicated and well-thought out by Joss. Between his jovial demeanor, his phobia of germs and his fatherlike love, guidance and protection to Faith, he provided some great Buffy moments in one of, if not, the best of the Buffy seasons.
I was going back and forth between Angelus and Glory. Glory was cool because she was a god (demi-god?), and not just a mere demon. I finally felt Angelus was a more worthy number two because of his history with Buffy and the Scoobies, and the fact that his transformation from Angel to Angelus was a more dramatic and interesting story arc.
I enjoy how Joss made some Big Bad swerves, having you think that one baddie was going to be the major villain, only to change it up mid-season or later. Such as how Spike and Drusilla were introduced early in season two, but ultimately relinquished Bad Bad status to Angelus midway through that season. Or the nerd triad from season six, who remained the main antagonists until they inadvertantly caused Willow's turn near the end of that season.
I thought the First Evil wasn't developed well enough. It first made an appearance in season three (Amends), and seemed to be a formidable advisary. Unfortunately, not much was learned and not a helluva lot transpired with that baddie in the final season.
Adam just plain sucked. Frankenstein-lite. Whoopee. He wasn't even important enough to survive until his respective season finale (although his human counterpart does make a cameo in the uber-cool episode Restless).
Heh, you truly ARE "my people"! Pearl Jam and Buffy? Very good common interests to have, I must say, considering how obsessive fans of both can get. Do I sense a pattern in obsessive fans? In April, I decided to start from episode one and go all through every season of Buffy, and then afterwards I'm on to Angel. I haven't seen an episode of either since a couple weeks after the last season of Angel came out on DVD. I watched the shows religiously during the original broadcasts starting midway through Buffy's season 5 (I know I came in late!) and at the same time caught up on reruns that happened to start with the first episode. I've kind of ignored it the past couple of years I guess, considering I haven't had much time for TV other than my weekly dosage of Grey's Anatomy and the odd movie. I have a lot more time on my hands this summer working for the family business so I'm re-watching all 12 seasons in their entirety. I'm actually on Once More With Feeling but I'm refraining until I have an empty house to take advantage of the soundsystem. Nobody else wants to hear it I'm sure, haha.
Going through it all again, I'm kind of surprised this show still affects me the way it does. I thought I was a little sick of it, to tell you the truth. I guess my little hiatus left me craving my two favourite shows more than I realized. I don't think I ever watched both series through from start to finish before now so I think I've given myself over to it a little more than I did before. I'm loving how I can see the whole evolution unfold without waiting for more reruns or more DVD releases. I can't wait to get into season 7 again!
I think my favourite episode would have to be Once More With Feeling, but I've seen it a few too many times so the magic of it all has worn off. It's the only one that I constantly watched out of order until I decided to go from start to finish, so I'm extremely excited for it tonight, although I have to admit I cheated and listened to the soundtrack the other night to get myself even more pumped up. I think my favourite episode of Angel is the one with the cup of perpetual torment, or whatever it was, when they're fighting to see who's the "true" vampire with a soul spoken of in the prophecy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE anything where Angel and Spike are pitted against each other.

the last season of Angel was I think prob the best one
i miss both of those shows they were always evloving and growing charcters overall a 2 very well done shows
I love this show. I'm still watching some of it for the first time because it wasn't on a station I could get the last 2 seasons. I think my husband is starting to like it too but it could be because all the girls on it are hot.
The reason the main stream is thought of as a stream is because it's so shallow. -George Carlin-
Well, my wife and I just completed the Season Four dvds, replete with re-appearances by Oz & Angel, Riley's showdown with the Initiative, and the Adjoining Spell that pitted Buffy/Xander/Willow/Giles against Adam. I'd almost forgotten about the encounter with the First Slayer and the bizarre dream sequences in the season finale.
The season--as a whole unit--is one of my least favorite of the entire series. There were some really lame storylines, beginning with the Initiative and Adam. They were/He was the worst of the Big Bads and I think Joss and crew knew that when they didn't end the season with the triumph over Adam. All told, I think Season Four necessarily had a lower number of huge episodes in order to get to the introduction of Dawn, life without Joyce, and Willow's journey towards great power in witchcraft in Seasons Five and Six.
Season Four contained some really great episodes, most notably Hush, This Year's Girl/Who Are You?, and Restless. I enjoyed the rise of Riley as Buffy's love interest, but I hated that his house and frat houses on campus became the scene every other week for something supernatural. One house fed on and gave off sexual energy. Another house became possessed and came to life on Halloween. Riley's house doubled as the access to the Initiative. One frat house even harbored a gang of on-campus vampires. It was like the creative team got stuck on repeat in trying to take the baddies out of the sewers, cemetaries, and hellmouth. Of course, they did blow the hellmouth up, so I guess they had to take it somewhere new.
And what was up with Buffy NEVER going to class after Episode 10 or 11? Once the storyline got her involved with Riley, it was like she withdrew from all academic work and just screwed him for credit hours. There was never any talk of her (or anyone else, save Willow occasionally) having exams, classes, study groups, or anything else college-related. Kind of stole the believe-ability away from Buffy being a freshman at a university. It's no wonder she dropped out in Season Five.
Hated:
Angel's reprises--once he's gone, he should've stayed gone
how the Initiative morphed into a corrupt government facility
that collegians never went to college during the second half of the season
implanted microchips in people and demons
intertwining wicca practice and lesbian urges--each are confusing enough in context; tough to decipher all the entendre
Loved:
the realism in episodes involving Willow's difficult ending with Oz (mostly written or produced by M. Noxon)
Xander's myriad of jobs
Giles surprising everyone with guitar and vocal skills
Thanksgiving dinner banter while trying to fight the Chumash Warrior
Anya's inability to be anything but literal and outspoken
It's not a bad collection of episodes. I mean, it's Buffy after all. But I'm glad it's time to move on to Season Five.
Anybody else have thoughts on Season Four?

WOW that is a GREAT overview rhinomagic. Even though I agreed that Adam/the Incitiative was the WORST of the big bad (i mean, come on w/Adam!), I actually thought when Angel came back was a good episode. It was in a way closing off Buffy/Angel chapter as a way of Buffy moving on and Angel, also moving on (even though it made me sad when they broke up back in season 3 :() I also think the Oz/Willow/Tara episode was good. Very well written. It tied everything together, Willow's old love and Willow's new love and willow caught in the middle. To me, I think it showed that even though Willow still loved Oz so much and was glad that he was back, but she also had to let go that chapter in her life. With Tara, it was a new beginning.
I can't wait to start watching Season 7, the FINAL Buffy episodes....it is going to be so sad when we watch it. oh well.

has anyone watched the two as they intertwined? like season 4 of buffy and season 1 of angel back and forth episiode by episode?
there wasn't much crossover but just a thought
I originally saw the episode where Buffy made Thanksgiving dinner and everyone, but her, knew that Angel was in town. Then it crossed over to Angel when Buffy went to LA and confronted him on why he was there. That was the episode were Angel became human again. Such a GREAT episode.
i've thought of doing that, maybe once we start watching Angel, I'll get the Buffy episodes and watch it back to back

Adam just plain sucked. Frankenstein-lite. Whoopee. He wasn't even important enough to survive until his respective season finale (although his human counterpart does make a cameo in the uber-cool episode Restless).
I LOVE LOVE LOVE anything where Angel and Spike are pitted against each other.

the last season of Angel was I think prob the best one
i miss both of those shows they were always evloving and growing charcters overall a 2 very well done shows
I enjoyed the second season the most. The whole story arc with Angel revisiting his dark side after losing Darla was pretty damn cool.
Oh, indeedy! I've always said that Pearl Jam fans are great, and Buffy fans are great! But fans of both are super awesome!!
Peace and Love

Anybody else have thoughts on Season Four?

hmmm to be honest haven't watched any angel in a long time i have season 1 and 2 on dvd maybe time to rewatch
yes it's good but does have it ups and downs like all shows
has anyone watched the two as they intertwined? like season 4 of buffy and season 1 of angel back and forth episiode by episode?
there wasn't much crossover but just a thought
I originally saw the episode where Buffy made Thanksgiving dinner and everyone, but her, knew that Angel was in town. Then it crossed over to Angel when Buffy went to LA and confronted him on why he was there. That was the episode were Angel became human again. Such a GREAT episode.
i've thought of doing that, maybe once we start watching Angel, I'll get the Buffy episodes and watch it back to back
