  • What's so racist about Uncle Tom? I've never actually heard anybody use this befor and I'm just wondering how it got such a bad reputation.

It comes from the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was about slaves.

So why exactly is Obama continually pandering to AIPAC? They are in violation of deeply serious sovereign laws

I'm betting less than 1% of the population actually knows about this

hahaha, seriously, i really don't have that kind of patience. i just at the moment have an enourmous amount of free time at work, my work is very much feast or famine......and sure, i am a wee bit anal retentive. ;)

it is curious to me though, continually being baited with what was being 'dodged' and when, once again, i clearly spell it out...nada......

what?? baited??? you said i dodge something, i asked what...you fail to see i'm not doding anything, i just disagree w/ you

plz explain how i was baiting you....actually, no, don't, it most likely won't make any sense

i've read thru this thread a couple times, yes...work really IS that slow at the moment, and i see my *points* conveniently ignored/dodged numerous times, i clearly stated my views, NOT racist, etc, etc, ad nauseuem...but...whatever..........c'est la vie.....

i disagree w/ you and neither of us is gonna change the mind of the other, if you would like to continue this going back and forth for a few more pages plz do it w/ someone else.

anyway, you conveniently have ignored a question or 2 of mine throughout this so whatever
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

    gotcha.

i also fail to see what Qs of yours i missed - so it wasn't 'convenient', but you're right, whatever. however, you do realize you CHOSE to continue this 'back and forth' as well....i don't think anyone held a gun to your head to continue the discussion.

and you still chose to ignore my question, so i get it.

obviously you just don't see that if obama were not a black man that nader wouldn't use such terminology, and you're ok with it...i am not...and there it is. said as much a long time ago.

btw - i wasn't actually trying to 'change your mind'......not at all. i only wanted you to address that one point and why you think that...but hey, no biggie. you fixate on the whole anti-immigrant comment which i STILL don't see as racial, and ignore the obvious racially loaded usage elsewhere.....it's all good.

i didn't see any ? marks in your post

yes, if obama wasn't black he wouldn't have used uncle tom....so what? could i refer to myself as a native american from a novel? or an asian?

    hysterical!

    seriously!
i have *asked* the same question, in different ways...numerous times.
i asked you - and others - directly, and you never addressed the post. then you actually quote my post directed to VG...and you LEAVE OUT, ignore, the quote in the middle....that actually contains, again...the actual question.

thank you so much for that.

and i and others see it differently.

i would far prefer to see racially loaded language left behind. whatever.
i made my points, numerous times. that's it. obviously we se this entire thing SO differently. i also highly doubt you would be 'defending' this to such great extent if it were not for the fact that nader spoke these words. my inference, of course. however....i would most definiely be saying every word i have no matter who uttered the phrasing.

ok, and my other point was if that is such an offensive thing to say and should not have been uttered then you should find obama saying someone didn't vote for him b/c they didn't like immigrants (ie biggots and racists) should be just as bad, actually worse, b/c 1 would be factual (if obama turns out to be a corporate whore) and the other is a presumption of why they didn't vote for someone

WOW...see? i seriously didn't even SEE that, at all! to me, being anti-immigrant is more about being against immigrants taking jobs, or not paying their fair share...bringing their kids into the school systems and not properly supporting said school systems, etc, etc....ya know...all the usual rhetoric about immigration problems and such. i truly did NOT see it being about the actual RACE of the immigrants, just the actual ISSUES of immigration....and the 'problem's some people have with it.

apparently tho, i guess it's b/c i don't consider race before making comments.....unlike you and mr. nader apparently do, or think others do as well.

and sure too...focus on the 'not many'...i honestly don't care. i could be a minority of one on the topic...i'd still speak my views. i don't need all to agree with my personal opinions on a topic. however, i do not feel alone in any case. :)

btw - you obviously have not actually gotten my points. it's not 'offensive' per se....nor racist in that instance...it's just a poor choice! using racially loaded language, especially terminology usually referred to as a slur.....is usually a none too wise choice for a world leader, period...but especially if they want to make a valid point. his actual point really has nothing to do with being an 'uncle tom'...but of being a sellout in general, to all, for all. there is NO reason to focus on obama's race....on the race of immigrants....on race, period. he should be above that. as should we all, but yes...i hope those who wish to lead would do so.

but you also are the person who stated in an earlier post that obama 'as a black man'...to use the term anti-immigrant as a reason people didn't vote for him.....was racially loaded and wrong. why is the fact that he is black matter there? i think a white candidate could just as easily make the same comment if votrs felt he/she were too much in favor of immigration...yet one would NEVER use the term 'uncle tom' in reference to a white president-elect and what he possibly may do. BIG Difference.....that i see, and you don't. so be it.

Are those 9 black coworkers going to be Kabong's equivalent of "Joe the plumber" ??

At a townhall meeting near you in the future : "My friends, the 9 black coworkers think Obama is an Uncle Tom..... we cannot afford an Uncle Tom in the White House during these dangerous times."

Dude, it was a Joe the Plumber joke.

Seriously though, do you really think there is a difference in using "is" or "will he be" an Uncle Tom and it's intended meaning? Seriously??

oh, i didn't get the joke cos you forgot the humor....

    again, YES!!

if you borrow $5,000 from me promising to pay me back in a year and i say `time will tell if you're a liar or not' is that the same as if i said 'god, you're such a fucking liar!' ???

    nope, not even close

the intended meaning of....if he sold out he'd be a black man selling out? that would be factual, wouldn't it

also you constantly misrepresent what was said by making it seem like nader said he IS an uncle thom

Yes it is. Both are insulting. Your example is not even close to the Uncle Tom reference -- HUGE difference in being called a liar and being referred to in racial terms.

well, so far the only ppl who seem to care are white folks from this board (who incidentally don't like nader) n fox news

you're examples and scientific examples are dishonest. you want us to CALL random black ppl an uncle tom when this isn't what nader did. your 'joke' had my black coworkers (who all voted for obama and yet had NO problem w/ naders comment) calling obama an uncle tom as well, you are distorting what was said

btw - WHERE do you even GET that comment? is obama an immigrant? so why would you ever assume, simply b/c he is black - why that even matters, i don't know - but nonetheless, even as a black man...WHY would you see that as him referring to people as racist? i think YOUR personal interpretation of that comment speaks a helluva lot more about YOUR personal pov than of obama's and any possisble racist/bigot overtones...seriously..

i so love how instead of actually adressing the points against nader's comments, you merely turn it around and readdress another issue entirely...such as obama's comments on being anti-immigrant or ed's joke about color in the white house. but since you actually refuse to debate the actual issue...sure...here we go:

i think i already addressed it, again, more than a few times....

whether obama is black, white or otherwise....his comments about being anti-immigrant do not, imo, hold ANY 'racially loaded language.' i thought i clearly adressed that in my very last post...which you conveniently ignored that point. him being black means NADA in regards to his anti-immigrant comment. seriously. YOU are interpreting it to mean he is calling others racist...i don't see it AT ALL. especially in the context of the ENTIRE point: being anti-immigrant, clinging to their guns and religion...to me clearly refers to being close-minded, period...and nothing to do necessarily with being racist....and ANY person could utter that phrase, accurately....

as to ed's comment, again, i had already addressed that point a few times. ed is NOT a world leader, not trying to be a world leader...so that right there makes a big difference. beyond that, saying something positive and in humor, a LOT different than a critique. if you want your critique taken seriously, if you want to be seen as a leader...it's best to leave the racially loaded language behind.

again, as i said in my last post...the comment you harp on, obama's anti-immigrant statement could easily be said by ANYone, of ANY skintone, in reference to anyone of anyskintone...whereas nader's comments can ONLY be said to someone who is black, any only references black people...just like you seem to harp on obama'sd skincolor by your focus on his comments 'as a black man'.......seriously...i see him as the president-elect, his skintone/race is of no consequence and should not be, period.

comparing comments a rockstar makes to comments of one who had hoped to be a world leader is comical at best.

just to refresh a part of the post you yet again chose to ignore:

but you also are the person who stated in an earlier post that obama 'as a black man'...to use the term anti-immigrant as a reason people didn't vote for him.....was racially loaded and wrong. why is the fact that he is black matter there? i think a white candidate could just as easily make the same comment if voters felt he/she were too much in favor of immigration...yet one would NEVER use the term 'uncle tom' in reference to a white president-elect and what he possibly may do.
