Lesbians Face Higher Obesity Risk

Lesbians are twice as likely as heterosexual women to be overweight or obese, researchers said.

The report, in the American Journal of Public Health, is one of the first large studies to look at obesity in lesbians.

Ulrike Boehmer of the Boston University School of Public Health and colleagues looked at a 2002 national survey of almost 6,000 women, and found lesbians were 2.69 times more likely to be overweight and 2.47 times more likely to be obese.

Any ideas as to why this is the case? I have my own ideas, naturally, but I'd like to hear some more open-minded views

Yes, but were these just American lesbians? A poll of Swedish lesbians may find something very different.

Very interesting. The article does say that "The results of these studies indicate that lesbian women have a better body image than do heterosexual women." Maybe lesbian women have a different image of what an attractive female body type is than what men are attracted to And maybe it's a more realistic view than the huge boobs and a tiny waist that many women seem to want in order to attract men (who want it)...

You know, this doesn't surprise me. Gay men are the ones that are all about fashion and being "the right size." Many lesbian women just don't give a good goddamn. If they're fat, so what. If some guy doesn't want to look at them, big loss. Some lesbians do care about body size, but a contingent of them couldn't care less. Is she nice? Can she change a tire? Does she know how to fix the air conditioner? Does she like MUDs? If so, she's cool. If not, well...maybe at least she's conventionally cute--that's second best. Many lesbians are freer from society's norm chains. I envy that. And admire it a lot, to be honest.

It's most likely got something to do with hormones and hopefully if the researchers are unbiased and thinking in terms of biochemistry they'll be researching it from that angle.

A heterosexual woman would have her pheremones geared to be sexually aroused by testosterone and other male hormones and lesbian women would have pheremones geared to eostrogen or female hormones or perhaps they generate more testosterone in the absence of it sexually stimulating them?

Whatever. It will be, supposing the study is correct, most likely a phenomenon happening on a base chemical level. I wonder if lesbian women are more predisposed to particular diseases like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome because of the ratio of eostrogen and testosterone in their biology, which most certainly will lead to a greater predisposition to obesity.

Consider this:

When I've dated women, I usually don't dress up as frequently or try hard to look good when I go out with my friends. Why? Because I'm not on the prowl. I'm not trying to send out the signal that I'm looking for hunnies. Ha.

Anyway, maybe lesbians aren't trying to signal to men, but to other lesbians. They're caught in a catch-22 in a way.

I don't think anyone enjoys being overweight for medical reasons, and if they had their preference, they'd be trim. So I don't think lesbians are "comfortable" being fat, if they are fat. They just don't try as hard because it makes no difference in their game.

so in order to be "realistic" men should find obese women sexy?

Anyone who has read the majority of your posts knows that women will not date you. Sorry, but even if you were Brad Pitt and had an 18 inch penis, women would still be repulsed.
