anyway i said Americans.. not Canadians :p
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I know. I'm just bored, and I wanted to get into a fight! :) But you caught me on the word 'could'!! :) And technically, since I'm a NORTH American, I am somewhat 'American'. ...........and I also wanted to imply that you are 'anal'. ;):)

  • its "couldn't give a shit" not "could give a shit"... this is exactly the kind of thing that does actually make us 'Britons' think you are stupid...

you just sniff it out from a MILE away, don't ya dunk? :D

Anyway this thread is ridiculous... Irish people have SEVERAL jokes about how stupid we are... particularly the poor Kerry people. I believe the Scots have them too... but we're CLEARLY not so those who say so are obviously stupid themselves and ignorant so why bother wasting so much time over them? I can't comment as to whether Americans actually ARE stupid as I don't know if I've met enough Americans to MAKE that generalisation... but a few of those I've met have been quite intelligent  . Some seemed a little... how do I put it? Ditsy! But I didn't give them an IQ test so I'm not sure if it qualifies as stupid

Only if you're Beckham? That doesn't make any sense. Is "Even" if you're Backham what you meant?

until they are all shipped overseas becos unions feel no one should ever be fired regardless of how incompetent they are... and they are incompetent becos american schools teach them they dont have to try and that whatever they do is ok as long as they keep their self-esteem up.

There in lies the problem. Schools and Universities no longer teach knowledge, they teach you how to make as much money as possible, how to survive in a dog-eat-dog world. True knowledge, the life teachings, and love are almost non-existant.....but hey, I have a new flat screen....

After I spent so damn much money to go to a school who in turn wasted that money on a whole lot of crap, they had better teach how to recover from that massive debt that I am in because of their fees.

Can't there be room for both? If rich people weren't taxed so much, maybe they could invest in the intellectual culture of america, like during the Renaissance when wealthy families paid artists for their services.

The point is when we're taught to focus on objects, and objectively throughout our lives, we lose sight of the "I" domains of life--ie: the subjective value of truth, love and beauty. In order to have the balance of an inner view with the outer view, we have to also learn to be quiet, and alone, and appreciate that which does not cost money. Sure we can have both, but the focus in the western world on the objective world of objects is flagrantly imbalanced.

No it didn't. That's the whole reason jobs end up getting sent overseas. "Only" if you're Backham infers that everone else isn't getting paid more than they would be elsewhere.

A large problem is the vast number of poor people who are not being educated. Their numbers are growing through immigration from the third world and the welfare state.

why would anyone think it's easy to call some americans stupid?

That was tried already but it didn't work. It was called trickle down economics aka Reagan-economics, which Bush 1 called voodoo economics when he ran for President. The rich got richer and did nothing more to help the less fortunate while Reagan ran up the deficit with his borrow and spend method...this is exactly what Bush 2 is doing right now. Bottom line is, it's greed. If we didn't have it there would be no poverty at least here in the US. If the rich were willing to help those less fortunate then they wouldn't be complaining so much about paying their taxes which pays for social programs that help the less fortunate.

well no, 'everyone' isn't. What IS the minimum wage over there?

The minimum wage varies from state to state and is actually very complicated as the cost of living varies as well in the different cities and states. There are federal laws and state laws. I think federal law has the minimum wage set at $5.15 per hour but New York State just increased it's minimum wage to $7.15 per hour but even Mc'd's pays more than that. I don't know how anyone could live on $7.15 per hour. Where I live usually only the high school kids get paid minimum wage.

it's just that there is so many of them and they're so loud.

americans are brought up with an incredible belief in themselves and their country. that is a good thing but it can also be detrimental when one lives an insular life and believes what they are told purely because they don't think they have reason NOT to believe. i think it comes from the way in which the country was founded. now speaking from an australian perspective, we have never taken our government all too seriuosly and we are not so quick to believe what we are told. this stems from the way in which our country was founded. as a penal colony where many of the convicts were political prisoners of varying kind but mostly fenians or merely irish catholics, we knew we were behind the 8 ball from the get go. the government was never trusted and gave no reason for certain sections of the community to trust them. and that continues to this day.

Woah, well our minimum wage is 8.30euro per hour which I've just converted to dollars, is $10.72. It's pretty much only kids who get that too.

As someone who was born and raised in the U.S., I can tell you that your views aren't correct - or at least that's my opinion.

Sure, in the 1950's kids were brainwashed and all gun ho on America - but nothing could be further from the truth now. We aren't the sheep everybody thinks we are.... look at the dissent towards our president and his war. His approval rating is hovering in the 20's.

The fact that we have so many people coming to this country for jobs, not leaving this country in search of jobs elsewhere.
