Woohoo! Gas prices going up... way up!

"The good times are behind us, the O.K. times are here, and the dreadful times are in front of us," says Peter Beutel, president of the energy risk management firm Cameron Hanover in New Canaan, Conn. "Any minute now, we'll see a 25¢ to 30¢ increase across the board. The closer we get to May, the worse it'll be for consumers."

Schork expects that in the coming months, consumers can expect to see gas prices above the May, 2007, record of $3.23, and that some markets will reach $4 a gallon in 2008. "The writing is on the wall—it's unavoidable," he says.

What a pessimist. You know how it is in the free market : a little correction and everything is back in its right place. We'll all be fine, all 6 billion of us.

    "Woohoo!" is anything but pessimistic.

I'm all for gas prices going up. First it will help to push people to drive as little as possible as most likely find greener alternatives. Second and more importantly, higher gas prices make alternate and hopefully greener sources of energy more viable and will lead to research, innovation and market driven solutions.

I totally agree. but in the short term, damn its gonna hurt the global economy. but many times, humans are stupid. we wont do something until we are forced to. (finding an alternative)

It will hurt a little in the short term but when change is market driven it has lots of checks and balances that normally let things from getting too bad. There's a lot of industries with vested interests helping to insure things never get too bad.

the courts agreed the fine was excessive and they have already paid over 3.4 billion in clean up costs. maybe you didnt know that

and you want to boycott them because they made huge profits? exxon doesnt set the price of oil, dont think you know this either.

don't believe everything their PR director writes ... the clean up costs have mostly been recouped thru insurance and tax write offs ... they have not paid a cent of punitive damages awarded some 18 years ago ...

33,000 people who filed a class action law suit as they lost their livelihoods, health and homes have received zero ... since then 6,000 of those people have died ...
  • it needs to go way up...like over 4 or 5 bucks a gallon. Then we careless Americans will not use it as much. I think outrageous gas prices will cause the country to permanently fix the problem.

and where do you get your information? regardless, I'm not saying they shouldnt pay a fine. but this is america. they have a right to fight it.

and boycotting them because they make huge profits is ridiculous.

A conservative talk show host here in the 'nati was talking about this morning on 550AM. He nor his wife will buy gas from Exxon because of the Valdez spill. He went on to say this has nothing to do with politics, it's just common sense to detest what Exxon did.

i boycott them because they constantly fund faux science orgs in a PR campaign against climate change ... i boycott them because they continue to sell dirty gas that can be better refined to remove particulates ... i boycott them because after years of stalling and clogging of courts (which costs you money) - they continue to NOT do what is right ...

it's about being a consumer and advocating your beliefs with your dollar ... you're right - this IS america ... you can demand more from the businesses that run this country or you can let them do whatever the fuck they want ...

$4 or $5 a gallon isn't going to stop people from driving.. yes it may limit how and how often people drive (vacations, leisurely drives) but most people will continue to commute to work which is the majority of gas consumption. Do you know why??? Because they have to...

if gas prices rise that much, public transportation cost will rise, transport of goods cost will rise, air fares will rise and the wages of workers and the distance which they travel to work will remain unchanged. We live in a commuter society and an increase in gas prices won't change that.

it may force people to purchase gas efficient cars. at the very least, demand will rise for them.

Isn't it tough when the supply is controlled by an oligopoly?

its not just tough, its pointless. A boycott can't stop a moving train FULL O' OIL!!!!!!

what gas efficient cars??? The Hybrids are only effective in city driving conditions, once you start driving highway speeds, you're using just the gas engine. And most people commute 30 to 45 minutes to work each way mostly on highways.

Plus, why would someone trade their car in (presumeably at a loss due to gas prices) for a new car (new payment presumeably higher) for a technology which isn't fully implimented or available (E85) or yet proven??

i use my car as little as possible and when i buy gas - it's from Sunoco (SunCorp - here in Canada) ... it isn't perfect - but it's something ... also, here in Canada, Esso's (Exxon affiliate) consistently used to make the dirtiest gas (not sure on the most recent tests) ...
  • unless you live in the downtown area of a few large cities, driving is a necessity.

hugo chavez?? ... shell? ... good grief ...

shell isn't great because of their continuing actions in africa where they are hiring mercenaries to threaten natives and exploiting tribal groups ...

anyways ... if people exercised their consumer power to force business to operate at least ethically - we could make a huge difference ...
