Any thoughts on Michelle Obama's speech?

I, for one, was thoroughly impressed.

As far as rhetoric, oration, and presentation are concerned, she could give her husband a run for his money.

I understand that we're not voting for her and that the speech was written by professionals, but as a fan of the English language and the power of communication, it was nice to sit back and enjoy that presentation. In fact, it was reminiscent of Mario Cuomo's speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention. I enjoyed her speech that much.

Any thoughts?

Great speech. Incidentally, press reports say that Ms. Obama was the primary writer of the speech.

Wow! If that's true, my impression of her just sky-rocketed.

Outstanding? Didn't really say much of substance. Her sob story about her father was a little much.
She is a great orator though

I thought she did a great job. I haven't ever seen her come off so "likeable".

She seems like a very well spoken, very intelligent woman.

It didn't need much substance; she is not the one running for office. She achieved exactly what she set out to do.

I don't have time to argue with you. I'm busy discussing whether or not Obama is the Antichrist with some dorky moms on a "Conservative Parenting" message board.

Sure, what did she set out to do anyway? Tell us how hard it was for her growing up. Very cliche. I thought it was boring.

I agree great orator but no content worth a damn. Also that whole exchange at the end was kinda strange it had a weird vibe to it. It seemed like Barack wanted to speak more, but was getting cut off... maybe I am reading too much into though.

Right. She could have delievered a 45 minute speech on how the New York Jets are the greatest NFL franchise from Namath to Favre, and you still would have thought it was cliche simply because it was Michelle Obama.

personally, i think all wives should just be standing there, mouths shut, smile on their face, waving to the crowd, backing up their man. like someone said earlier in the thread, she's not the one running for office.

and before i get slammed, let me say that if hillary won the nomination i think bill should have adhered to the guidelines i wrote in the above paragraph. just shut up, smile, and wave.

    Are you married?

She's not the one running for office. The whole speech was simply to prove that her and her husband are experienced and came from blue collar roots. She was acting as hype man, and she did a pretty good job.

You say "sob story"; I say "well-crafted metaphor."
You say potato; I say spud.

Let me leave you with another "sob story":

"...Ever since Franklin Roosevelt lifted himself from his wheelchair to lift this nation from its knees...For nearly 50 years we carried them all to new levels of comfort, and security, and dignity, even affluence. And remember this, some of us in this room today are here only because this nation had that kind of confidence. And it would be wrong to forget that. "

see, i knew some a-hole would come in with a remark about me being sexist.

Uh huh. Well that's fine, but I doubt your raise or promotion in the candy factory is anything like the democratic national convention.

Great compare FDR to Michelle Obamas father. I cant see any comparison between the two.

Its FDR, a figure we can all repect not her father who i could care less about

Why was that so great anyway? When you see a presidential candidate do you really look for them to come from a similar upbringing or have a blue collar background? that has no affect on what type of president they will be and quite frankly i think that angle is played out.

It's about being relatable to the common man. To many Americans it's very important. I mean if they don't have an understanding to what it means to be a middle class American and get about $40-80,000 a year, then how can they know what is best for them. Mitt Romney has bus loads of money, but has he ever known what it's like living paycheck to paycheck? Nope never. It's common sense that if someone has worked their way up the ladder by hard work that they are better expierenced for a position of leadership than those who got handed everything(see George Bush).

That's my understanding of it anyway.
