This just happened to me. I've been waiting around all morning for a roofing contractor to give me an estimate to do some repairs from hurricane Ike. My insurance needs 3 estimates before they cut me a check for my damage.

Right around 10am this contractor pulls up my drive and all the way up the drive he's looking at my election signs in my yard. So I go out to meet this guy at his truck, I've known him casually for over 20 years, and I give him my most friendly greeting and extend my hand for a handshake and I get nothing... Not even fine "how are you?"

He hardly spoke to me as I walked around showing him the damage...
Real fucking uncomfortable attitude the whole time.

So as he's leaving I ask him if he can get me the estimate by Wednesday so I can turn it in to the insurance company.
"Yep" was all he said as he got back into his truck and turned back around and refocused his attention on my Obama sign.
He gets about halfway down my drive when he turns around and comes back.
So I go back to see what he needed and he says
"you know that estimate you need?"

"yeah" :confused:

"get Barack Obama to do that for you"

and he just took off staring me down...

I promise I'm not making this shit up.

I agree. What the fuck is up with all the signs?

    :D

Seriously, that sucks, dude. But I don't understand all the signs, to be honest.

just kidding, that completely sucks. How fucking petty they are.

I was helping my wife sell Jewelry at a flea market the other day and there was a McCain booth across the way handing out stickers (and verbally berating people for not voting for skelator). Anyway a person with a McCain sticker came up and was looking at the jewelry. I was THINKING about saying "McCain supporters have to pay twice the price, since after all you think the economy is doing so great!"

I decided to keep it non partisan and professional.

I live on a farm next to a busy highway... I've always allowed anyone Republican or Democrat or whatever to put up their signs if they ask...

It has always helped me with the PR from the locals and it doesn't hurt to have the local sheriff on your side... So I don't tell any of them no if they want to place a sign on my corner. These signs aren't actually in my yard but are about 300 yards up my long driveway.

Right now I have signs from both guys running for Sherriff, both Governor signs a local state representative and an Obama sign.
The Obama sign is the only one I personnally placed.

The country is divided big time. Race relations I thought had improved since the 60’s. This election is proving me wrong. But it has opened the door to talk about it, which I’m excited about.

Signs for any candidate displayed on people’s property put a bad taste in my mouth.
I couldn’t really tell you why, they just do.
One of the options is not to tell anybody who you’re voting for, there’s no law that tells you have to tell people.

    Yes, Southeast MO...

I agree somewhat that a few months from now this will go away but sometimes around here the partisanship is so thick it makes you paranoid. A few years ago I was so outspoken against Bush (before it was acceptable and the war was patriotic duty) I believe that I was denied or "blackballed" on a home loan from a local über conservative bank president. I might be paranoid but the next day I was approved with flying colors from another bank 30 miles away.

I agree.. that is bullshit and it has to stop.

I cannot believe how people are getting with this election.. it is INSANE and I am sorry, but I honestly feel it is way more than a republican and democrat thing.. and that is what makes me so incredibly disgusted.

After this election I'm through with them unless they are my own. I plan on running for State Rep on the Dem ticket in 2010.

That's insane. Can you complain to one of his higher-ups, or is he an independent contractor, or what? I'd have somebody else do it if possible. That guy just sounds like a prick.

Wow. That's pretty sad, but funny at the same time. Sorry that you might be getting screwed over just because your preference of candidate, but you can't help but laugh at these people.

Most of these Obama haters and McCain supporters are such fucking babies. "Wahh, we don't want Obama in office...Wahh he's black and he's winning no fair...Wahh we thought McCain would be kicking his ass right now." Did you see the guy at the McCain rally who said "we never thought we'd be in this position."? I can't wait for Obama to get elected so they can cry some more. It's like they don't even want an election, in their mind their candidate is so superior. The other guy? Well he's just a terrorist with no experience who wants to tax and spend blah blah blah.

You should have told that guy to go fuck himself. If he works for a company I would call and report it that's seriously unprofessional.

  • Well when i was a auto mechanic, i refused to work on any cars that had a bush, or pro life stickers on it. Call me shallow, an asshole, what ever you want, but it was my choice. I dont agree with the contractor but i understand where hes coming from.

Do you work for yourself your own business, or are you an employee at a company? IF you own your own business then ok it's your discretion but if this guy works for a company that isn't his that's unprofessional. I agree with the anti-Bush, pro-choice sentiment but refusing to do a service for that reason is bordering on partisanship.

    "Bordering on.."???

I agree that if this guy is independent than I guess he can do that. It seems pretty shallow and silly--particularly given he had set up an appointment (maybe less bad if he won't help out in the future). If he works for someone, then he is beyond unprofessional and should be fired. No warning.

Same with the auto-mechanic situation. If you own the business, do as you will, though I don't think it's smart business. But what really bugs me about both situations is if someone sets up an appointment then gets turned away after rearranging their schedule, etc.

I still think McCain will win, but to the OP, if not. You have to find a way to rub this dude's nose in it. Something clever and bonus points if you can get some bad word of mouth for him out of it.

oh my...god touches me once again...

no. it didn't...i was able to post the info at another site that reaches many of that particular group's membership...i did email the admin to question why, but have not heard anything yet...maybe i need to make another attempt.

but as far as the content of this thread is concerned..

perhaps the service "person" is a member of such a "supremist" order.....

most business try to remain neutral and even if this person was a part of an organization, it would be silly to refuse revenue..it sounds to me like a person who displays narrow mindset...

    simple as that...

but my question is moreso to the OP, why would you feel a need to paste your yard with slogans? you should just do what they say in those anti campaigns, say no....but bump to your for interjecting one of your own under those circumstances...sending visualization for protection for your family and space...(peace)

to theDecline: wouldn't it have been more productive to work on those cars and have a decent conversation? i mean, you could have made a difference and even possibly limited yourself from opportunity. we are all equal and our positions are moving constantly...if we stay in one space, we are essentially nowhere...have you changed since your days of being a mechanic?

i wouldn't call it being an ass, but i would call your position avant..

Did I mention you specifically? No. I don't know how you feel about his race. I was referring to the ones who actually feel that way, and yes there are many that feel that way, and yes there are many who are voting for him only because of his race and i disagree with both. For everyone voting for him because he's black there's a racist who won't vote for him for the same reason. Happening on BOTH sides, I was just talking about the crowd who's upset that he's black and probably gonna become president.

    You're a shallow asshole. :)

But seriously, all you're doing is living out Bill O'Reilly's wet dream of culture wars.

I mean pro-life-stickers? That's one of those issues I where I think both sides are pretty reasonable (the extremists notwithstanding of course) - one side thinks one should have the freedom to decide something for themselves in America (how novel!), and the other wants to prevent something they see as murder (again, how novel!). While personally pro-choice, I certainly understand where a pro-lifer is coming from. Though I can see how you wouldn't want to work on a car that says "Bomb all abortion clinics," but it doesn't sound like that's what you're talking about.

Anyway, all you're doing is screwing yourself out of business, so I think you're free to act that stupidly, but I stilll think it's needlessly stupid and divisive.
