Obama & Oprah

Traditionally celebrity endorsements have done little to effect political outcomes......look at the last couple of presidential elections and the depth of celebrity support both Gore and Kerry. That said Oprah has considerable influence in the US ...........how much weight will her endorsement of Obama carry in terms of putting him over the top for the democrat nomination???

Oprah Winfrey raises $3 million for Barack Obama

Michelle Obama, Sen. Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey at yesterday's fund-raiser at the talk-show host's estate in Montecito, Calif.

Oprah calls Obama her "favorite guy" - and she's working hard to get him in the White House.

Winfrey, the queen of daytime TV and a powerhouse in show business, yesterday hosted her first presidential fund-raiser on the grounds of Promised Land, her spectacular 42-acre coastal estate in Montecito, Calif.

"I haven't been actively engaged before because there hasn't been anything to be actively engaged in. But I am engaged now to make Barack Obama the next President of the United States," Winfrey told a star-studded crowd of 1,500, according to a source at the event.

The outdoor party raked in a whopping $3 million for Obama, the Democratic senator from Illinois who aspires to be the nation's first African-American President.

The soiree's high-profile celebrities included actors Sidney Poitier and Forest Whitaker, comedian Chris Rock, TV star Ellen Pompeo and tennis champion Jimmy Connors.

Stevie Wonder and gospel vocalist BeBe Winans performed. A mariachi band played. The menu included mini burgers, chips and guacamole, chicken tenders, corn-on-the-cob on a stick, iced tea, water, lemonade and wine.

Guests forked over $2,300 apiece to spend a few precious hours on a meadow at the sprawling property in Santa Barbara County, which the talk-show host bought for $50 million and recently described as "sacred spiritual grounds."

"Oprah was very passionate and very personal," a guest, who asked not to be named, told the Daily News. "She clearly, really loves this person."

Winfrey, who has the power to catapult unknown authors to the top of the best-seller list, will soon see whether her mighty influence in media and publishing can be transferred to the rocky waters of presidential politics.

"My money isn't going to make any difference to him," Winfrey told CNN's Larry King earlier this year. "I think that my value to him, my support of him, is probably worth more than any check."

Obama's aides refused to discuss what role Winfrey might play in the campaign beyond yesterday's fund-raiser, but speculation is mounting about possible TV ads and campaign appearances.

Winfrey recently said her decision to let Obama's supporters gather on her grass was "no small thing for me."

"I really do feel that this place is God's gift to me," Winfrey said. "It is a very, very special place. ... There are going to be some serious restrictions and requirements to get in there."

Guests were told in advance to bring government-issued photo IDs and to expect all purses and bags to be searched. Cameras and recording devices were strictly prohibited.

Attendees were required to park about 8 miles from Winfrey's estate, where they were taken by motor coach.

The guests were told to wear flat shoes because the event would be held in a meadow and most were not permitted inside Winfrey's mansion.

As much as Oprah's endorsement might help, in my mind (as a Canadian mind you) no American Presidential Canidate campaign move will ever be as awesome as Bill Clinton showing up on the The Arsenio Hall Show playing his sax.

Oprah is my mother-in-law's goddess. I swear if Oprah said, "gather all the dirt you can and shove it up your ass" there wouldn't be any soil left in this country. And a good portion of it would be up my MIL's butt. Sorry, it's been a bad day.

So I heard Oprah say that she really has never had a candidate that she felt she could endorse until Obama.

My question is this: Are his views really any different from any other candidates in the past?

I just remember that Letterman bit from the Oscars years ago. Oprah, this is Uma.

    Sorry.

Obama needs to start attacking Hilary. There is no difference, besides gender and race, between the two. I think Hilary is getting by on name recognition only; the polls are not really true. I for one will never vote for her; trading infidelity for future political ambitions? I'm not that much of a feminist.

I also think that the Republicans are just salivating at the gift of running against such a polarizing figure.

That's not only funny but accurate as hell for a lot of people.

People don't seem to understand that more of the same is a disaster. More of the same = all mainstream candidates. We know that Hillary, and Obama, and every republican are all pro corporation and pro war. More bullshit same as before. Kucinich, Ron Paul or Gravel are the only guys that aren't serving the kool aid. Not surprisingly enough, the only ones that aren't CFR members. Republican = Democrat = Republican when you all attend the same club.

Revolution is the remedy. Time for a Rebuild.

So many seem oblivious to it. Gimme my Big Mac combo...Oprah is on....nyuk nyuk...fart...

It might be that simple if you knew what you were talking about... I really don't care for her all that much, but calling her clueless is pretty off base. With her business savvy and hard work, she has created a net worth of more then everyone on this board combined, and has raised and donated more money to charitable causes and social issues then all of us combined as well.

I don't really think that he will get a huge bump out of this, but it might at least get some outsiders into the political discussion.

Why do people bash Oprah? Is it jelousy?.. She caters to house moms, so her thing isn't my cup of tea, but for as generous of a lady as she is, tearing her down just makes you look like an asshole.

Didn't she first endorsed Hilary and now it appears she's jumped over to Obama and I also thinks she clueless. I bet you if you asked her what or which candidate voted for the CFR program she wouldn't have a clue?

It is not that huge for Oprah to be endorsing Obama. Especially since she already stood up for Hilary, that kind of dulls out the feel of her endorsement. When you are that big of a celebrity and you have the kind of influence she has you need to be more responsible with your public statements and endorsements. I have no problem with her changing her mind but she should not have endorsed anybody until she was 100% sure.

Well it's the truth. Is she known as a polital afficionado by any means? No.

Shes great at what she does, but let's face it she lives in her little TV star billionaire bubble lifestyle. Face the facts of the matter.

She's a TV personality that people pay into because she has a naive likability.

It does nothing to qualify her as an economist or political analyst. Sorry, but my my original statement holds up.

But isn't that just about every public figure? A lot of the appeal of celebrity is based on a naive likability or what we perceive to person to be like. Sometimes it's right, but just as often we are wrong. We have no idea what her political knowledge is or what political conversations she has with her friends. To dismiss her as "pretty much clueless" based on what you perceive her to be is no different than the people who believe everything she says on TV.

And you need to be a political analyst or an economist to campaign or legitimately support someone?

As far as I care, anyone can support or endorse a politician... Members of Pearl Jam have done it, Oprah does it, Ted Nugent does it, hell, even the guy down the street from me with his 10 Ron Paul signs does it.

What I said is it's akin to being disillusioned (drunk) behind the wheel of a very fast and powerful car. It is. She's using her power to influence people's lives.

I think it's irresponsible on her part. Very.

So first she endorses hilary because she's a woman, then she endorses obama because he's black.

This quote tells me everything I need to know about "O":
"I haven't been actively engaged before because there hasn't been anything to be actively engaged in. But I am engaged now to make Barack Obama the next President of the United States," Winfrey told a star-studded crowd of 1,500, according to a source at the event.

Nothing to be actively involved in? She must have had blinders on the past 10 years.

Besides, I'm going with whoever Tyra endorses anyway.
