'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'
So far the thread seems to have mainly been about physical disability. I work with clients who have developmental disabilities as well as some physical (parkinson's, CP). I'm an aerobics instructor and was requested to set up some fitness classes for the developmentally disabled. We have so much fun together. They are developmentally disabled, but no matter what, we are ALL human. When this one lady drools and I remind her to wipe her mouth, or another one to stop picking at her (unfortunately, self-inflicted) sores, its not that big a deal. You just be matter of fact and meet the person where they are. One of my clients can move just one arm, and a leg, from her chair, but we all enjoy music and moving together. I have several with Down's syndrome who do their best. I use the same routines as in my regular classes, but way simplified, like we might do one move for half the song, instead of switching back and forth every 8 reps. I have seen improvement in people's fitness level and that is the best part. I love this group and would practically teach it for free if I could afford to.
