What does everyone make of this? I think it's significant, but surely not as much as it would have been had he not been thrown under the Bush Administration bus. Still, I think he's respected enough to provide a bit of insurance for Obama.

I agree, it may show that he was never in the inner circle of the Bush Administration and is now voicing his true opinon of them and any disgust he may have towards them.

However, to SOME far rightwingers this may show to them how blacks that flock together STICK together. This may scare them into thinking once Obama gets in the Whites House putting forth an agena for black will be first on his list.

I always thought he would be a fantastic president.

And his point about how the candidates handled the bailout situation was spot on.

    Great endorsement.

    An Obama presidency is unacceptable.

does this mean Colin Powell is also an America-hating terrorist?

but anyway, I'm guessing that shares in Obama stock will go up 5% by the close of the market tomorrow.

Yeah, I've becoming increasingly convinced that, despite his race, Obama is gonna take this in a landslide. I remain cautious though. I mean, I certainly know Obama is the end all solution, by any means, but I think it's a step in the right direction and I've been feeling better about my country than I have in many, many years. Though, this needs to be a start and not a solution, I hope most Americans will realise that.

I was wondering, when listening to Powell's great interview this morning, where the hell he was during the four years he was Secretary of State.

  • Colin Powell was a key turning point in lying to get the Iraq war sold to people, if not the key turning point. I wouldn't count on him as any great source of inspiration, unless starting fake wars and murdering innocent people is your hope and inspiration.

Powell is probably the one person on this planet that would have been on overwhelmingly superb choice for President or Vice Preseident of EITHER party and would have had the country in the palm of his hand.

I think this a fair view-point. And it's why his political career is sunk. I do think he was the one sympathetic figure in the whole mess. He at least seems to have a conscience about it- though yeah, too little too late really.

I thought Powell purposely pulled away because he didn't agree with the war or the administration? Didn't he change his mind on it? I thought that was well known..

I don't remember him saying too much about it afterwards in regards to sympathy. He just retreated in to the shadows and carried on about his business.

People that don't question situations, especially with as much background, and access to a wealth of statistical info such as him, and fly in the face of it, are quite simply not good candidates for making key decisions that affect people's lives.

I don't understand the people that support him, in spite of this reality.

He disagreed with the way the war was being fought; he agreed with the decision to go to war, at least at the time. So it's a little hard to listen to his talk of "negotiations", and "restoring our dignity in the world" when only five years ago either he disagreed with the necessity of such notions or didn't push back hard enough against the Cheney/Rumsfeld parts of the administration. If he felt there was an unnecessary rush to war, he should've pushed harder against it. It's the most important decision an administration can make.

I had no idea it existed until I went to work for the government. However, I guess it would make sense that people racist against blacks prolly got wind of that a long time ago, huh?

I wish I could feel this way! Even watching Obama's poll numbers rise over the last several weeks hasn't allowed me to relax. It's mentally exhausting :(

I just don't know about Ohio. And I don't trust Florida. At all. What if all the battlegrounds go McCain?

I'm hopeful that Powell's endorsement will give Obama a bump in some of those states. I guess we'll know in a few days...

Pretty shitty that it took someone that high up so long to say it.

Unfortunately, so many people are busy covering their butts, afraid that what they say will someday cost them votes or their job. It must be a luxury of being a retired politician that you're finally able to speak the truth. But yeah, pretty shitty that they feel that's necessary and pretty shitty that the electorate that makes them feel that way.

It was said about a week ago...

Unlike the Ayres noise, it just didn't resonate with the media. Any of it.

But unfortunately it takes someone like Powell saying it so beautifully and thoughtfully for it to find it's rightful place.

Yeah... He stood up at the UN and lied to the world about WMD's and now he has the blood of over 4000 soliders on his hands.
Sorry but this endorsement is a fuckin joke. If Obama had any God damn balls he would say thanks, but no thanks...
