harold went to a playboy party after the super bowl last year. no one mentions that.
it's interesting how there in the US you're fighting for votes revealing if someone went to a playboy party or not... Anything more relevant for which you should gain votes or not?

its an ad against harold. it is being used against him, not to gain votes
...then to make him lose votes...
Is you head made of wood?
well thats a nice comment. you arent from america, you dont understand that almost all political ads have nothing to do with the real issues. its always about swaying someones opinion

Please, don't be angry for the "head made of wood" please, I was joking, really.

please, tell me, in you opinion, what was the point if the political ad...it appears you saw it differently, please share....
the point of the girl in the ad was that their representative parties at the playboy mansion. race never even occurred to me, or most sane people i'm sure.
so what are the rules?
if they had an african-american girl, that wouldn't be racist?
the only reason people here think the ad is racist is because they have such a distorted view of people with different views than their own, and assume extremes.
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
i'm really disappointed that the GOP caved in and pulled this ad. i wish they would stop letting the far left dictate to them what is acceptable. the other side certainly doesn't play by those same rules.

Now Ford has the cover of Newsweek. There's a lot of powerful momentum going his way. But in the end will Tennessee vote black? After all, it's a mostly white state. Can they throw off their southern heritage and any prejudice they may have regarding race? If they can't what will it mean for Barack Obama?
just out of curiosity, if ford isn't elected will that make you think that the people of tennessee voted the other way because they're racist? seems that a lot of people around here don't give anyone south of the mason dixon line much credit for being politically aware. and i'm not singling you out with that last sentence, abu.
and as far as barack obama is concerned, last i heard he never committed to running for pres. in '08. and if he does decide to make a go of it, he still has to get by hillary. the '08 elections are going to be pretty entertaining, imo.

No.. I won't think that at all... I find the ad offensive.. and enlightening about how those bringing the message see the voters or at least the ones they are trying to pursuade.
Will it work - I don't know - there are infinate factors that move people to act on a particular day such as election day.

I must agree with your first statement. I watched it and didn't think anything racist about it. Now, I can see how people can construe it as racist. But to call it racist is a bit over the top in my opinion...which today is what politics is about. Once again, it's people looking for a reason to get offended (I could be wrong, the ad very well could have been deliberately racist...but i don't think so.)
Re: the blonde bimbo, i think they were playing that more as an attack on his character for going to the playboy mansion.

Its not hard to not see it.. the add has nothing to do with government -
the only black person in the ad said "He looks good, isn't that enough"..
I'd say that article very much played on people's prejudices.. racist is not a good word for it.. That ad is garbage for sure - however you interpret it... and should not be sponsored by any government official.. It sure does mix in well with the rest of the shit on television - We need to blow all the televisions up.

i agree the add has nothing to do with government;and I also agree full heartedly that it's a sucky add and I can't believe it's being aired, not so much for it's racial overtones, but rather b/c it's an awful add and doesnt accomplish anything.
My beef is that we keep trying to say we are a color blind society or we need to be color blind, but all too often the first thing we point out is color. Should it matter if the black lady in the add says he looks good? or if the white girl said, "call me"? In my mind no, the only way that I can see people getting terribly upset with this add, is b/c they want to search for something.
make sure the fortune that you seek...is the fortune that you need
election ads in the us are not designed to win hearts and minds. they are intended to paint the opposing candidate in a negative light. just an excuse for the two parties to slander each other in the most pathetic and irrelevant ways imaginable. that GOP ad with UBL says it all.
i'm really disappointed that the GOP caved in and pulled this ad. i wish they would stop letting the far left dictate to them what is acceptable. the other side certainly doesn't play by those same rules.
You need to get over this left/right crap and think about what's right. You sound llike a bill oreilly robot.
Liberals think because of a geographic location they can decide how you think...then tell you that you are wrong naturally because you don't live where they do...hypocrites probabably, intolerant motherfuckers definately.
I love what passes for logic on this board. "I live in the South; I'm not racist; so people in the South aren't racist."
And, my friend, I have lived a fair amount of my life in the South and spend time there each year. And I've lived in the North and in the Midwest. And it's true, there is racism everywhere. But it's idiotic to think that it doesn't exist in the South.
On the specific question of inter-racial dating, the Pew Research Center (a non-partisan public opinion organization) did a study in 2004 measuring people's racial attitudes. They asked a question about inter-racial dating and found that 78% of people outside of the south supported inter-racial relationships, while 59% of Southerners did. (I know . . . facts . . . psshhhttt.)
But in the end, I agree with what's been posted immediately above. I think the main point was the visit to the Playboy club, and that the ad just added a soupcon of race for a little flavor.
And just for the record, this post by WindNoSail is a perfect example of conservative argumentation on this board. You guys descend into this nasty stuff very quickly. (I mean -- "intolerant motherfucker definately [sic]." Really?) And if I had come back and called him/her/it something worse, I would have gotten tagged for being too mean. So you guys can get in the gutter, but we can't. Dishing it out but not taking it . . . .
"Things will just get better and better even though it
doesn't feel that way right now. That's the hopeful
idea . . . Hope didn't get much applause . . .
Hope! Hope is the underdog!"
Oh really? So before I answer the question on race with an employer or the census bureau, I need to take a poll as to the public's perception of me?
No but if you are in thie public eye, it is the public that will label you. This is not abouth the Census or any "official" race designation--it's an election, which is to an extent a popularity contest. You can say that his race is virtually the same as his opponents all you want. That's not what the voters think and you know it.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

But what if I'm a voter and that's what I think?
The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
Every voter can think whatever he or she wants. You can think that he's a sea turtle if that suits you, but it doesn't change the fact that 99.9% of Tennessee voters think he's a black man.
"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." ~ MLK, 1963
Harold Ford, a black man, is running for the empty Senate seat in Tennessee. The race is close, a virtual tie exists between Ford and his opponent, Republican Bob Corker. The GOP is so scared of losing this seat that they have stooped to new lows in negative campaigning. Playing off Tennessee's traditionally racist environment, the National Republican Congressional Committee has rolled out a new set of ads exploiting the racist sentiment in the state.
In this ad, a half-naked, blond, white woman is portrayed talking with one of her friends. She is discussing meeting Ford at a Playboy party. At the end of the ad she looks at the camera, winks, and says "Harold, call me..."
How shameless is this? Many people in Tennessee are appalled by the thought of a black man being with a white woman. As ignorant as this mindset is, it is prevalent in Tennessee. For the GOP to play off this racist attitude is just plain dirty. Again, it goes to show you that the GOP, while claiming to be the party of Lincoln and the party that freed the slaves, winks at the racist right. That's why racists flock to the Republican Party.
And the GOP wonder why blacks vote for Democrats almost as a whole?
These ads are reminiscent of South Carolina 2000, during the primary between George Bush and John McCain. John and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter named Bridget. Cindy found Bridget at Mother Theresa's orphanage in Bangladesh, brought her to the United States for medical treatment, and the family ultimately adopted her. Bridget has dark skin.
Anonymous opponents used "push polling" to suggest that McCain's Bangladeshi born daughter was his own, illegitimate black child.
Actions such as these prove that the Republican Party is in fact a party of closet racists. I'm really curious as to the opinions about this from our conservative members of this board. Come on culture warriors, let's hear it.
if you think this is a new low you havent been paying attention
I think its OK to ask the question, but yeah ... Peoples' responses are way out of proportion to the actual content of the commercial.
I actually agree. When I first read the thread I could not open the video. I watched later on and it was not as bad as I thought.
The "call me" girl was a tacky add-on that was probably racially motivated, but I guess I envisioned the entire thing making poorly-veiled racist comments and with the exception of the last two seconds, I don't think it did.
My favorite part was the "he's gonna tell me I have too many guns" part. That gave me a chuckle.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

I am awake! Just because there is a white girl in the add depicting the playboy mansion action Harold supposedly likes is racist?! It suggest he is a playboy and that is it. Makes no sense, the libs are making this a race issue....if it showed in NY, it wouldn't be an issue but because it is TN and all southerners are stupid racists and that will change their votes, that is an alarming line of thought.
I am not saying the add in total is an effective ad, it is just an ad...but to say it was racist is just silly.
The ad is designed to play to the fears of racists. The republican "southern stategy" as coined by the Nixon administration continues. Currenty it has been expanded to include gays as well. And voters respond as expected.
