GOP sink to a NEW LOW in Tennessee

Harold Ford, a black man, is running for the empty Senate seat in Tennessee. The race is close, a virtual tie exists between Ford and his opponent, Republican Bob Corker. The GOP is so scared of losing this seat that they have stooped to new lows in negative campaigning. Playing off Tennessee's traditionally racist environment, the National Republican Congressional Committee has rolled out a new set of ads exploiting the racist sentiment in the state.

In this ad, a half-naked, blond, white woman is portrayed talking with one of her friends. She is discussing meeting Ford at a Playboy party. At the end of the ad she looks at the camera, winks, and says "Harold, call me..."

How shameless is this? Many people in Tennessee are appalled by the thought of a black man being with a white woman. As ignorant as this mindset is, it is prevalent in Tennessee. For the GOP to play off this racist attitude is just plain dirty. Again, it goes to show you that the GOP, while claiming to be the party of Lincoln and the party that freed the slaves, winks at the racist right. That's why racists flock to the Republican Party.

And the GOP wonder why blacks vote for Democrats almost as a whole?

These ads are reminiscent of South Carolina 2000, during the primary between George Bush and John McCain. John and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter named Bridget. Cindy found Bridget at Mother Theresa's orphanage in Bangladesh, brought her to the United States for medical treatment, and the family ultimately adopted her. Bridget has dark skin.

Anonymous opponents used "push polling" to suggest that McCain's Bangladeshi born daughter was his own, illegitimate black child.

Actions such as these prove that the Republican Party is in fact a party of closet racists. I'm really curious as to the opinions about this from our conservative members of this board. Come on culture warriors, let's hear it.

I give it 15 minutes, and someone is going to point out that Democrats play dirty politics too. But they won't be able to come up with a campaign commercial as explicitly racist as this one.

My personal policy is that if a candidate runs an ad that attacks their opponents position, record, whatever and doesn't express their own personal views or positions, I will not vote for them.

The other side to this is that Mr. Ford isn't black.

North Carolina isn't far from where Tennessee is (literally, we're neighbors )..

A friend of mine named Shawn (black guy... also the nicest friendliest guy you'll ever meet) walked into my girlfriend's house, got screamed and cussed at, and kicked out instantly. Whenever she wants to do something with Shawn or his girlfriend (who's white..) she has to lie so her mom doesn't find out and ground her.

Sadly, that attitude is still present in our society.



Anyway... evil evil evil evil thing to do..

p.s., Ford is kicking ass anyway in Tennessee... someone's getting desperate...

I think you miss the point of the subtlety. Its not to fool those opposed - its supposed to cover it up for those who support this thinking - and keep it alive - make it more difficult to attack... maintain deniability and ignorance - their greatest qualities.

I am not an American, nor a Republican supporter, and I usually think that some of you guys cry racism way too often, and its bloody tiring. This time, however, I'll be the first person to agree that this commericial is low-brow and underhanded. One wonders if a similar commercial would have been used with a white candidate ...
