i do get the point, as i was saying it is an open invitation for biggots and racists to continue supporting the republican party. i was simply suggesting that they might as well come out and say it bluntly. they are not fooling anybody, and their "deniability" and "ignorance" just insults everyones intelligence on top of offending us with their hatred and intollerence. we get it already republicans... you hate the the mexicans, go ahead and make it a felony to cross the border in order to help your families live, build that wall to keep all the brown people out in the name of security, while the northern border goes unchecked for 3000 miles, but we arent afraid of white people, so we will pretend a terrorist could never cross there, even though the only terrorists we know of sneaking into our country came from that border. and we know you hate black people, you could not make that any clearer, nice ad. but i would prefer you just run with your Klan hoods on like the politicians in "O' Brother where art thou" and we get it .... you hate gay people, at least you dont try to hide that biggotry, it is still ok in america to hate gay people so you just openly mock them...... and your hatred for arabs, and muslims needs is equally appearant. you hate the poor too.... is that because they are poor, or because you just affiliate the non whites as being poor?.......

You know what's really fucking sad? I wasn't surprised in the least fucking bit.

It suprizes me a little... I know these losers think like this and want to do this - but actually taking the risk of putting it on television... I don't know

The funny thing is that big media will likely not risk trying to expose it.. I'm not sure the country at large is all that opposed to it...

interesting to see if CNN or the democratic party trys to bring it to the attention of the nation - or chickens out.

Now Ford has the cover of Newsweek. There's a lot of powerful momentum going his way. But in the end will Tennessee vote black? After all, it's a mostly white state. Can they throw off their southern heritage and any prejudice they may have regarding race? If they can't what will it mean for Barack Obama?

This whole thing is making me think of Stephen Colbert too. (You are quoting Stephen Colbert, right?) All they need is a picture of Corker with his arm around a bored, annoyed black guy.

EDIT: i totally had no idea you were quoting colbert until i read the other replies. but i still think this could possibly be interpreted for what it is worth.

you see it, but you do the right thing and don't judge people by it. but, you still see it.

color is the byproduct of the spectrum of light, as it is reflected or absorbed, as received by the human eye and processed by the human brain.

color is just a phenomenon. it is nothing to make judgement on. what the eyes see and the heart feels are two different things.

We need a few more years of Bush to drive home how far backwards we have traveled.. but dictator? that could last for decades.. I don't know if we will be able to pull our selves out of that.

there's been a lot of assertions here, mostly idiotic and void of any substance. but that's to be expected. has anyone said WHY they think this ad is racist?

Because in the South, not all that long ago, mobs used to lynch black men who were accused of making sexual gestures at white women. Emmett Till was beaten to death for telling a white woman she was attractive.

Also, not all that long ago, many states in the South banned inter-racial marriage. The Supreme Court didn't put a stop to that until 1967 (within my lifetime).

Even now, inter-racial couples in the South (and elsewhere) are targeted with hatred and even violence.

An ad that shows a white woman hinting at having had sexual contact with a black man is targeted at those ignorant morons who harass inter-racial couples. It plays on all their fears and insecurities and racism.

Go ahead. Tell us why those racist voters don't exist. Tell us how no one thinks like that, how liberals are hypocrites. I'll just duck out and take a snooze until you go away,

I'M not offended by a white woman suggesting she was having sex with Harold Ford. RACISTS are offended at the suggestion. You want me to defend their ignorance and stupidity? Look elsewhere.

The voters in Tennessee who will vote against Harold Ford because of this commercial. And experts in public opinion and campaign advertising -- a group that obviously does not include you -- expect this to cause a shift in the polls of about 2%.

My statement is racist? Race exists. To acknowledge it not racist.

Harold Ford, a black man, is running for the empty Senate seat in Tennessee. The race is close, a virtual tie exists between Ford and his opponent, Republican Bob Corker. The GOP is so scared of losing this seat that they have stooped to new lows in negative campaigning. Playing off Tennessee's traditionally racist environment, the National Republican Congressional Committee has rolled out a new set of ads exploiting the racist sentiment in the state.

In this ad, a half-naked, blond, white woman is portrayed talking with one of her friends. She is discussing meeting Ford at a Playboy party. At the end of the ad she looks at the camera, winks, and says "Harold, call me..."

How shameless is this? Many people in Tennessee are appalled by the thought of a black man being with a white woman. As ignorant as this mindset is, it is prevalent in Tennessee. For the GOP to play off this racist attitude is just plain dirty. Again, it goes to show you that the GOP, while claiming to be the party of Lincoln and the party that freed the slaves, winks at the racist right. That's why racists flock to the Republican Party.

And the GOP wonder why blacks vote for Democrats almost as a whole?

These ads are reminiscent of South Carolina 2000, during the primary between George Bush and John McCain. John and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter named Bridget. Cindy found Bridget at Mother Theresa's orphanage in Bangladesh, brought her to the United States for medical treatment, and the family ultimately adopted her. Bridget has dark skin.

Anonymous opponents used "push polling" to suggest that McCain's Bangladeshi born daughter was his own, illegitimate black child.

Actions such as these prove that the Republican Party is in fact a party of closet racists. I'm really curious as to the opinions about this from our conservative members of this board. Come on culture warriors, let's hear it.

This is a red herring, there is no basis for the outrage. I am from the south and we don't give a damn about white/black relationships....but it is funny how the dems are creating a racial divide again...

Remember when Gore put on the commercial in Texas about the black man who was dragged to death by white supremists and that since GW didn't support the hate crime law; "it was like her daddy was dying all over again"? Explotation of that child I say.

wake up. its not the liberals thinking because of geographic location they can decide how you think..... it is the GOP. THEY are the ones running the goddamn ad. they do not invest this much money to focus an ad to an audience they thinl it will have to effect on. they are the ones calling you racists, in fact, they are banking on you being racists. the fact that others are offended by this tactic is not the problem. why is this so hard to grasp?

I am awake! Just because there is a white girl in the add depicting the playboy mansion action Harold supposedly likes is racist?! It suggest he is a playboy and that is it. Makes no sense, the libs are making this a race issue....if it showed in NY, it wouldn't be an issue but because it is TN and all southerners are stupid racists and that will change their votes, that is an alarming line of thought.

I am not saying the add in total is an effective ad, it is just an ad...but to say it was racist is just silly.

that makes you and about 3 other people on the planet that do not see what the underlying message of this ad is...... too bad there are not more of you, like i said, i would prefer they just come out and say it bluntly. but because you don't get it let me translate the ad for you... the way the GOP wants it to resinate around Tennessee... "LOOK OUT ALL GOOD WHITE PEOPLE, DARKIE IS COMING FOR YOUR WIVES AND CHILDREN...." now, either you are in denial, or you just don't want to admit that this is what the GOP is all about. this ad is aimed DIRECTLY at people of that mindset. that is the reason they made the ad. it was a conscious decision to make the ad. this is what the GOP thinks of the south. and if it works, this is what the rest of the civilized country will have no choice but to believe about the south. to vote for this prick is to endorse and legitimize this stereotype. not all republicans are backwards racist assholes, and those that are not should be FURIOUS that this is how they are being represented. because if you cant tell, it is obvious to EVERYONE but you that this is what the ad is about. but when you allow this to represent your party, what are we supposed to think? why cant any republicans just come out and say, "FUCK THIS, I'm not a racist asshole, and this ad does not represent me or my opinions, and frankly i am offended by it" instead you all have to pretend it is not made for the purpose it was made. you have to defend the indefensible. you have to act like everyone who sees the obvious is so stupid that we cant read between the lines.
