Well, I am reading off and on these ebooks on NLP. But they used OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to computerize the original books and it's got a lot of characters wrong, makes it hard to read and easy to be distracted.
I did a short course on NLP a few years ago. It was very insightful.
I can't remember all the things that we covered but I do remember one quote very clearly. It's stuck with me.
"There is no meaning other than that which we place upon it"
I just find NLP interesting right now because it's aligned with my view of reality. There are 13 'presuppositions' in this book that I already believe. So it's an interesting self-help book for someone like me.
For example:
People make the best choice they can at the time.
A person always makes the best choice theycan.given their map of the world. The
choice may be self-defeating, bizarre or evil, but for them. It seems the best way forward.
Give them a better choice and they will take it. Even better.glve them a superior map
with more choices on It.
Whatever works for you. Cool.
If you get a chance to jump out of an airplane, don't hesitate.

Ahnimus, I'm thrilled to say I completely and totally agree with you. Neurolinguistic programming has played a big part in my healing. With it you can retroactively change your perception of experiences from the past. When I saw the movie "the Butterfly Effect", I was dazzled, because that was what my healing was like--I could mentally go to the past, and change my experience in my mind, and it would change my experience in the now. Amazing. Not to mention, actual communication takes place when we meet people at their map of the world. I am totally at peace with the bizarreness of the world due to that what you've stated here is true about people doing the best they do with what they've got. And when they are offered a new concept or paradigm that they resonate with, they will absorb it. It's evolution. I changed and healed with new and empowering maps and I constantly redesign my own maps of the world in order to create my life to serve me. I'm glad you are learning this stuff. It's very real in how people experience it on the road to empowerment. Peace.

This is very similar in a lot of ways to Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People a great self-help book.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

You may find it interesting that I tried hypnosis last night with a particular video I found on metacafe.com. It didn't work though, I was tired when I started doing it and I just ended up going to bed. It's not the first time I've tried hypnosis either, it's never worked, yet.

hypnosis online @ a .com service?
dude, that's not gonna work, i'm sure of that.
i'm even shocked a man of your intelligence sunk to such a level
at a .com hypnosis site, and thinking it may work.
dude, stop it.
haha.
When I was really messed up, and gripped by horrific OCD, I'd read about all kinds of techniques. One I would do was visualizing myself from the future, being all peaceful, healed and healthy, coming to me and basking me in "her" light. Other than comforting me mildly, it seemed to do little. It's cool though that I eventually overcome OCD, and after that had to also work with healing my eating disorders. I had to heal old unresolved emotions that were paralyzing me from being mySelf. So, I was healed of OCD, and becoming a peaceful person, and I'd go to myself in the past and enshroud her in "light" and healing and peace. And it was a very profound inner experience that I was bringing that healing full circle and the self from the past and the one from the now were able to merge.

I disagree, chadwick, my friend. Hypnosis is so natural and accessible for anyone to do with simple instructions. Some people are less suggestible than others, but it's amazing what can be done.

Yes. I have read parts of this book but haven't read it from cover to cover.
The other thing that I took away from the course was how we each percieve things differently. Loosely the following scenario and explanation was given me. I found it very illuminating and has helped no end with my communication skills. So we have an incident, but of those present each will focus on a different aspect of said incident. Some people are visual. They can view the incident and can tell you exactly how everything looked. What people were wearing, how the surrounds looked. Facial expressions. Anything that can be seen. These people will focus their attention with their eyes. Some people are auditory. At the same incident they can tell you everything that was said, any noises there may have been, if music was playing. Anything that might be heard, they are more likely to focus in on that.
And some people are oh I forget the term but I think it was pretty much emotive. And emotive people pick up on the feelings of others. How they feel while the episode is taking place. I think this is correct anyway. People generally focus in on one of these three ways. But can be a combination of all of them. It's very interesting and has proved very useful in dealing with people, especially at work.
For the things I know as opposed to my beliefs, yes. For example, by experience one can find what practical applications do and do not work. When they work consistently over and over, I definitely have confidence in them.

Again I disagree. I've learned tons of stuff on auto-suggestion and affecting the unconscious through my own self-learning. People like Ahnimus and I thrive learning independently rather than handing our power to the "experts" and in this day and age this knowledge is widely available by those willing to share.

I find self hypnosis to be a very useful tool for quieting the mind.
I think having a qualified psychologist or hypnotherapist guide you initially is extremely beneficial and makes it so much easier to then go on to self hypnotise. I am a huge fan of self hypnosis and find it as beneficial as meditation.

And with NLP, you can tell by observing someone at any time, which their main maps are. For example, I was telling Ahnimus privately, last week, that by his Youtube videos, I could see when he was accessing visual cues in his mind, or when he was being auditory. and when you see this plainly written on someone's face, you can respond to their preferences, and build "rapport" wherein one can climb in their mind and influence them. And this stuff is used all the time by the millions who use it--businesses, sales people, and so on. The psyche is very clearly mapped through various systems for those willing to learn how to take advantage of that, for good, not-so-good or for indifferent purposes.

i think actually my subconscious wanted to mess with Ahnimus.

I do so with meditation, too. I let myself go to the ground state of awareness that is there before our thoughts/emotions arise. With meditation, I allow myself to sink to the level of preform that underlies all form. Peace, chadwick.
I'm sure your subconscious DID want to mess with him.

i do meditation for better breathing.
for peaceful energy to fill me.
serenity and tranquility is gained by doing meditation.
visualize ones goals for ones life.

lots of benefits to meditation.

I hear you. At the same time, what you brought up can be discerned online. but it's merely a map and still we miss out on the essence, which to use Ahnimus for an example, makes a huge difference.
I can pick out key personality traits all the time on message boards...we all can at least unconsciously--we know who we resonate to or not. In terms of neurolinguistic programming, though, it's in the word choice. For example, I notice some people speak using visual descriptors. They might say "I see" or "it seems....blablah". If that dominates, I can use visuals back and connect most effectively. Some say "I think" this or that, and then we can know that using logic is more effective with their map. Others say "I feel...blah, blah" which makes them more kinesthetic, accessing the body and emotion/sense.
If you notice in my myspace pics, I've perpetually got my head tilted from side to side. Very auditory people do that. I'm a sucker for words and sounds, to huge degrees, and auditory descriptors like "mellifluous", or I say "I hear you" a lot.
I love to spot people who have natural preferences that I resonate with a mile away. It's so cool to feel that harmony. (auditory word ) Although I tend to blend different systems. My fave mapping is personality type, where I LOVE intuitive people, and I LOVE feelers.

I noticed that Ahnimus. On this board, you tend to predominantly give off a more "thinking" vibe, and that fits your "thinker" personality profile. But, on the phone, I felt a lot of warmth in your essence. You don't speak it in words, but I could feel a lot of compassion flowing through you, probably due to your experiences as an underdog. I did tell you you are quite balanced. In your vids, I didn't analyze it, but I noticed you were showing visually and auditorily. And the fact that you like to discuss philosophy for foreplay--or maybe you said you do so actually during sex--certainly says something for your auditory nature.
