Man, four leaf clovers seemed to jump right in my lap as a kid ;)

:D Me too! I can remember once running around the yard racing with my brother and as I was going over a patch of clover I noticed a four leaf one, it just jumped right out at me. So I stopped and went back to the spot and immediately found it there! Kinda weird, I always had the oddest talents. :)

Maybe you are Irish? Short? Have a certain affinity to green?

I am short (5'2), but I'm not really Irish (only a little on my dad's side). I'm Greek, just 'lucky', I guess.

You know, 4 leaf clovers are cool because they are rare, that's why they are considered 'lucky'. Common sense should have told you that as a kid. What prompted you to search for them to begin with?

    The leprechauns told me to.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

They only told you that to distract you, so they could sneak away with their pot of gold. Too bad you fell for their trickery.

I realize that it's beyond my control to make decisions or perceive for my child. That's not what I'm talking about, nor do I recall using the word control. But it is within my control to modify the environment my children grow up in. For example, I don't watch television, so they probably won't have any idea what Blues Clues is until they get into school. They will have toys for bolstering coordination and thought patterns. I'll constantly switch up their toys so they have new more challenging things to work with. I'm not talking about taking a blank child and uploading my software, that is totally ridiculous. Hence why I used the word influence.
That is a much different statement than "They will be whatever I make them to be," which does indeed imply control.

I will be the greatest influence on them, so essentially they will become whatever I make them to be based on the influence I subject them to.

Looking at it causally, a self is a repertoire of behavior appropriate to a given set of contingencies. Using chaos theory, a small influence on my part during infancy, could be the influence that makes them great adults.

It is ultimately within my control to make the child blind, emotionally hollow, or mentally retarded. None of which I intend to do, so they will get plenty of physical and emotional stimulation.

The statement is only accurate in a very general way. My kids, for example, are very kind, intelligent and open-minded. I know that I had something to do with that. But they are also many other things that I know I had nothing at all to do with.

You will have much to do with what your kids become, but I also guarantee that they will surprise you over and over again.

I think, aside from the obvious physical and mental genetics, the parents long-lasting contribution to the child is in the personality traits the young individual aquires.

edit: wtf do i know. lol.
