I've never understood what "myths" and "fallacies" about any particular group of people weren't actually true nature observations.

We should embrace ourselves for who we are. That means being able to laugh at ourselves and not associating hate with the humor.

Don't movies that involve black people in humorous black stereotypes typically draw large black audiences? See people laughing at themselves.

I'm not pissed at the movie Pineapple Express because I'm a stoner. I find it funny because I can relate to it.

    I agree.

These people are all worked up over something they don't even have a good grasp of. They don't even comprehend the content, context and punchline.

People need to lighten up. No one is making fun of those who have mental handicaps.

Hell, I've seen allegedly "normal" people who are and behave more retarded then anyone I have ever known who has a true mental handicap.

I haven't seen any marketing making fun of mentally disabled people.

I never understand the protests by these groups. Most people don't even view things the way they do. It's only going to generate negative press for the protesting group. Kind of like Peta.

Perhaps, people are simply too sensitive?

You are correct. Ben Stiller's character is an actor who takes on a role of a simple minded man in the Vietnam War so he can win an Oscar. It's poking fun of Actors who will take roles they have no business taking in order to try to win awards.

It has nothing to do with making fun of mentally challenged people. This might be the stupidest protest of all time.

In fact you can say it's retarded...;)

I think Dave Chapelle's jokes about white people are fucking hilarious! Would I go out and protest because he's making fun of me? Hell no!

Say what you want about actors playing mentally disabled people, but Leonardo DiCapro was brilliant in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He should have won the oscar.

For the record, I'm not in the camp that slams an actor for simply playing the role of a handicapped character. I think that's silly. Those roles are not easy to play and it does take a talented individual.

I see it no different from any other role an actor my take, which requires a great deal of physical and verbal mimicry or creative license.

My comment regarding Forst Gump/Tom Hanks was intended to point out the possible target of Stiller's parody in this new film.

And yes, DiCaprio was superb in that role.

:D:D Oh, that was good....very good. You got a huge burst of laughter from me on that one. Nice......:D

Oh, did you ever see the movie "Nell" with Jodie Foster?

She was absolutely brilliant in that movie.

Now, her character is not mentally handicapped, rather, a girl who was raised and isolated from other human beings and exclusively influenced by her mother, who was a stroke victim (paralyzed one side of her body).

Therefore, she grew up mimicing and learning mannerisms and language from a mother who could not speak correctly because half of her body was paralyzed by the stroke. So she speaks a very different english language than we are accustomed to....."Nellish".

It's great movie and Foster is magnificent.

When will people stop the madness? People with mental disbilities can have mild to severe cases. If anyone one has spent alot of time with someone whom is disabled will realize that they just have a unique perspective and reality... ummmm doesnt that sound like all of us?

I try to spend time educating those whom feel uncomfortable with people whom have mental disabilites. I spend alot of time with a 8 year old boy whom has downs syndrome. Frankly, he the most brightest, funniest, cutest child I have ever met.

When are we going to stop degregading members of our society? I dont mind a good chuckle about the truths of our ignorance as a society whether it comes to race, mental capabilities, gender, social status, sexual orientation, etc....

But my real question is: When will we stop perpetuating the myths, fallacies and stereotypes about valid members of society? Do we or do we not "all" have some thing "wrong" with us in the eye of the beholder? Isnt this what makes us individuals? When are people going to get past such gross judgements and realize that all of us are important and most of all- important to each other?

call me simple, but what's the issue here...? what happens in this movie that is so bad...?

    Nothing.

Seems to me, some overly-PC people who allegedly don't have mental hanicaps; probably stirred the pot with this and coached some handicapped people into being outraged over nothing.

I haven't seen the movie, but do you guys remember the scene in "There's Something About Mary" where Matt Dillon's character is trying to impress Mary and he says he works "with retards"?

That was funny, not because the word retard is inherently funny. It was funny because he used the word in an ignorant way, which was the opposite of what he was trying to accomplish.

People need to listen to more George Carlin. There are no "bad" words. There are bad thoughts, bad intentions, and words. Language evolves. The word retarded was itself a clinical euphamism at one point not too long ago. When I was a kid, my mother, a special education teacher, used to say that she taught severely retarded children. Now they are disabled, but it's the same thing in the end.

More groups should do what the gay community has done. Embrace the words and make them their own. Once you own the words, they can't hurt you.

That is so silly, it's just a movie.

I think a lot of people are missing the point.

What Hollywood is doing is glorifying a derogatory word. I'll repeat that -- a DEROGATORY word. To all that feel the 'Retard' word is just a word, try having a family member who is mentally challenged, or even physically handicapped, and see if that word means the same thing to you.

It doesn't matter how the word is used, "retarded" is picking fun of those who have disabilities. It all stems back to the original slang usage and that is making fun of everyone who has some kind of impairment. Hollywood, and Ben Stiller, is saying that it is acceptable to use it, which is WRONG. These people who aren't "with it" are typically better people who have more sense than so-called "normal" people.

I, like the OP, has a child with Down syndrome. This kind of stuff takes on a whole new meaning when it falls into your life suddenly and really brings on a whole new world to deal with. And that world can be pretty cruel. Have some respect please, and treat everyone like you'd treat yourself!!

I have a Hell of a situation to fight for the rest of my daughter's life and that is that she is just like everyone else, and she should be treated with the same respect as everyone else!
  • actually i think officially 'retarded' is ok, but 'retard' isnt. it kinda makes sense. 'retarded' is a scientific term, 'retard' is usually a negative term for someone who is retarded.

but yeah i agree its not the word, but the thought behind it. but i seldom ever hear the word 'retard' used in an inoffensive manner. Unless its from some guy genuinely ignorant of what to call them (rarely).

chances are if you ever called my brother a 'retard' when i was around you'd have a cracked skull in about .5 seconds, unless i thought you just didnt know its offensive. thats one thing i have zero patience for.
  • as far as the movie is concerned, like i said its all about context. i think the movie (at least from what i hear) isn't really making fun of retarded people. i admit the word makes me uncomfortable, but i'm not in favor of banning a word in art because some people might be offended.

if dumbasses use the word in real life, it only makes sense that dumbasses in movies should say the same thing. hopefully the movie shows those types in a somewhat negative manner (but i dont think thats a major theme of the movie).

i think thats pretty ridiculous though. once one word is considered politically incorrect, people will just use a new one until its banned too. why not fight the ignorance behind it instead changing the word every few years. ARC is still Association of Retarded Citizens.

If it keeps actors like Cuba Gooding, Jr. from playing... well, whatever the term is that won't have a bunch of hyper-sensetive politically correct people from jumping on my neck... like in that movie, 'Radio', then I'm all for the ban.
