  • its all about context. i heard it was making fun of actors who play retarded people to get oscars. I have a brother with down's syndrome and that doesnt really bother me. if its just laughing at retarded kids for being retarded, i would probably walk out. i've just never found that funny. I dont care if someone thinks i dont have a sense of humor for not laughing at certain people.

I would never laugh at somebody who has a disability either, the film makes fun of actors who will do anything to get a part, hence Robert Downey Jr playing a black guy.

Exactly the joke in the movie is making fun of actors like Sean Penn who basically take roles where they pretend (badly) to be mentally disabled people in order to win awards.
  • I've never understood what "myths" and "fallacies" about any particular group of people weren't actually true nature observations.

We should embrace ourselves for who we are. That means being able to laugh at ourselves and not associating hate with the humor.

Don't movies that involve black people in humorous black stereotypes typically draw large black audiences? See people laughing at themselves.

I'm not pissed at the movie Pineapple Express because I'm a stoner. I find it funny because I can relate to it.

    I agree.

These people are all worked up over something they don't even have a good grasp of. They don't even comprehend the content, context and punchline.

People need to lighten up. No one is making fun of those who have mental handicaps.

Hell, I've seen allegedly "normal" people who are and behave more retarded then anyone I have ever known who has a true mental handicap.

I haven't seen any marketing making fun of mentally disabled people.

I never understand the protests by these groups. Most people don't even view things the way they do. It's only going to generate negative press for the protesting group. Kind of like Peta.

Perhaps, people are simply too sensitive?

You are correct. Ben Stiller's character is an actor who takes on a role of a simple minded man in the Vietnam War so he can win an Oscar. It's poking fun of Actors who will take roles they have no business taking in order to try to win awards.

It has nothing to do with making fun of mentally challenged people. This might be the stupidest protest of all time.

In fact you can say it's retarded...;)

I think Dave Chapelle's jokes about white people are fucking hilarious! Would I go out and protest because he's making fun of me? Hell no!
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

Say what you want about actors playing mentally disabled people, but Leonardo DiCapro was brilliant in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He should have won the oscar.

For the record, I'm not in the camp that slams an actor for simply playing the role of a handicapped character. I think that's silly. Those roles are not easy to play and it does take a talented individual.

I see it no different from any other role an actor my take, which requires a great deal of physical and verbal mimicry or creative license.

My comment regarding Forst Gump/Tom Hanks was intended to point out the possible target of Stiller's parody in this new film.

And yes, DiCaprio was superb in that role.

:D:D Oh, that was good....very good. You got a huge burst of laughter from me on that one. Nice......:D

Oh, did you ever see the movie "Nell" with Jodie Foster?

She was absolutely brilliant in that movie.

Now, her character is not mentally handicapped, rather, a girl who was raised and isolated from other human beings and exclusively influenced by her mother, who was a stroke victim (paralyzed one side of her body).

Therefore, she grew up mimicing and learning mannerisms and language from a mother who could not speak correctly because half of her body was paralyzed by the stroke. So she speaks a very different english language than we are accustomed to....."Nellish".

It's great movie and Foster is magnificent.

When will people stop the madness? People with mental disbilities can have mild to severe cases. If anyone one has spent alot of time with someone whom is disabled will realize that they just have a unique perspective and reality... ummmm doesnt that sound like all of us?

I try to spend time educating those whom feel uncomfortable with people whom have mental disabilites. I spend alot of time with a 8 year old boy whom has downs syndrome. Frankly, he the most brightest, funniest, cutest child I have ever met.

When are we going to stop degregading members of our society? I dont mind a good chuckle about the truths of our ignorance as a society whether it comes to race, mental capabilities, gender, social status, sexual orientation, etc....

But my real question is: When will we stop perpetuating the myths, fallacies and stereotypes about valid members of society? Do we or do we not "all" have some thing "wrong" with us in the eye of the beholder? Isnt this what makes us individuals? When are people going to get past such gross judgements and realize that all of us are important and most of all- important to each other?

call me simple, but what's the issue here...? what happens in this movie that is so bad...?
