Obama, a true Narcissist.

My understanding is that from infanthood, we're all born with narcissistic needs, which means we need someone to mirror to us all our wonderful traits, which then creates people who are self-loving and healthy. Some of this mirroring takes place when our caregivers gaze lovingly into our eyes when we are babies. It's also my understanding that some/many of us don't get this mirroring of our wonderful traits, but rather are ignored, neglected, shamed, criticized, etc. In general, if parents have not had their own narcisstic needs met, they are not able to pass that onto their children.decides2dream wrote:besides:

so evidently, a wee bit of narcissism is a-ok, even in the psych community.
think all is safe here now.
Ultimately, if these needs are not met in healthy ways, they manifest on a scale of increasing intensity in unhealthy ways, until reaching a level of disorder as categorized by the psychiatric community.
Self-love, on the other hand is healthy. And self-love, or actions such as affirmations, or surrounding one's self with support can help us meet our narcissistic needs in healthy ways."The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth." ~ Niels Bohr

It's healthy until it crosses into something else..........."The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth." ~ Niels Bohr

angelica, believe me...i don't need it explained, nor do i think anyone else here needs it either. it's called humor.
i 'get' that you don't like to joke about such things, but i do. this thread is completely humorous to me...particularly the title, which i know stems from the article with the same title....but THAT is complete abuse of the word 'narcissist' imho, so thus it makes sense to joke about it as the actual subject deserves. that's all.
and i still find it funny...
c'est la vie!
anyhooo...the fun is gone, now.....:pStay with me...
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0 -
I don't take issue with this at all because the word is being used in the correct context. It can be depressing to read through a thread. Just like politicians can come off as narcissitic (along with average people).nobody wrote:man, it's depressing to read through this thread;)
If your question is aren't I then very busy trying to change people's views by clarifying words...no, I'm not. I generally don't bother. People generally like to cling to their ignorance and insensitivity, so I tend to pick my battles and clarify rarely, Such as in this thread.
I know evolution continues on in it's perfect time, with it's perfect consequences and therefore I'm enabled to proceed harmoniously. There are natural life consequences for our actions at every stage of our development for perfect reasons."The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth." ~ Niels Bohr

this finally brought the original quality back in this thread;)
thanks be to you!!:)
angelica,
look, I know what narcisism means...I even read a book about it once...
if someone needs to be called out here it's the writer of this hatepiece in the OP...he uses narcisism while he means vanity at best, only to make a more sensationalist headline. Everybody who (sorryly) read this article knew he didn't mean the actual disorder but more some sort of overblown and unjustified self-esteem...turns out all the hullabaloo was just hot air, since Obama doesn't do what he was accused to be doing...
My only point to even comment on this thread was WHO CARES where the guy is talking...people should be caring at what he's saying...at least that's what I think
to (seriously) infere from my statements that I "justify" narcisism or "don't care" about people with psychological problems is very very far fetched to say the least...I wouldn't even have answered your post if you hadn't quoted me...I took it jokingly that way. If you want to point out the wrong use of words, quote that dumb "article"...
and I really have no idea what all this has to do with evolution...but I guess I won't understand anyway...

reading this thread reminds me of Star Trek The Next Generation when people would have to try to explain a joke to Data but in the end it was a waste of time.0
