    isn't narcisiscm a pre-requisite to become a good politician...?

but since my country is involved...this is a big cloud of warm nothing...since he's not going to speak there...he's probably speaking at the Siegessäule (="victory pole") in Berlin...it's on the same big street the Brandenburger Gate is...

those guys in your media get off about just ANYthing, don't they?

at least he comes over and talks to people...

At least Obama has something to be narcissistic about. He is a good looking man, undeniably. But, yeah, I would say that narcissism is a must-have quality in a president or presidential candidate. Let's face it...there are going to be plenty of times when you're about the only person who loves you. So, you might as well really love yourself! :)

I'm sure when the american press find out that this venue is always the aim of the (not so) famous (anymore) Love Parade, they will come up with something in relation to gays, half naked people, and weirdos...;)...just scandlous how obama can be so shameless etc etc etc...
there is always something...my focus lies on what the guy has to say to europe...the rest I leave to the tabloids...

  • There's no denying that Obama has a high opinion of himself, but that was just a blatant hit piece.

there's no denying ANY presidential candidate has a high opinion if him/herself, as mentioned by others...i think it rather a prerequisite for the job. :p

    totally...

He is a presidential candidate, you don't get to that point without a deal of narcissism. And I have no idea how much his campaign pushed for speaking here, but I can't blame them. it makes for a great backdrop.

Obama is a narcissist; I won't attack him for it, but are people here really saying narcissism is necessary for a politician?

Maybe not for a politician, but to be willing to go through the constant spotlight of being a serious presidential candidate, yes, I think that you do need to be a bit of a narcissist.

    confidence =/= narcissism.

I think all you need is confidence, but you don't need to be in love with yourself.

    time for creating an outrage...;)

my remark was rather provocative...as in I couldn't care less if he was a narcicist...I don't want to be his buddy, I want him to offer good politics...if that takes him to be loving himself to no end...who cares...

narcissism is more than really loving the self, which I advocate by the way! And that is essential to health and self-esteem!

Narcissism is: "the trait of excessive self-love" ...which is beyond healthy self-love. It's like vanity and conceit, and actually based on a underlying lack of true Self love.

Which is not to say that Obama is literally a narcissist...

My interest is on people who justify narcissism ;) ... Whether they do so for shock value or not....

Like everyone else in this thread, I'm not equipped to judge. I am equipped to clarify terms.

    exactly.

while i cannot honestly answer for all who posted in this thread about his 'narcissim' being a-ok, i will say for myself, and hazard to guess for others....it's all done tongue-in-cheek, b/c who seriously takes this thread title seriously? it didn't deserve to be taken seriously. :p it was/is funny......and thus, went with that tone. obviously, there IS a difference between great self-confidence and narcissim, but sure....it's good to have a laugh too. :D

Then you have nothing to worry about...right? ;)

You said "loving himself to no end" and you said "who cares". And I clarified that from information on self-love out there, there is a degree where self-love is not okay--there is an end to where healthy no longer applies and it can become imbalanced. Therefore I personally think it's relevant when people question and or care.

    If you don't, great!

do you also do this kind of clarification if somebody says s/he's "depressed"?
or is that too common to point out every time?

depression is depression with varying degrees.

    self-love and illness/imbalance/disorder are different.

so that was the turning point?:)
depression is a disorder too though...people are medicated...kill themselves...

I was just asking, because just like the word narcicist, depressed is used in its lighter meaning every day...
and I thought the content of the threat made it obvious that it was all said "tongue-in-cheek"...now I'm puzzled that you were actually serious about what you said...looked more like a practical joke to me or something...

Some people took some of the comments here seriously. It's up to the individual on what perspective they take.

The word narcissist may be used everyday referring to not-truly-ill behaviour. And other times it's used in referring to psychological narcissistic behaviour.

I'm personally not comfortable with people minimizing the effect of psychiatric disorders in any way, although it's commonly done.

Why? Because Charles Krauthammer says 'There's nothing new about narcissism in politics.'

Then proceeds to whine like a big baby because Obama is doing what he says is 'nothing new'?

That makes a whole lot of sense. Not.
  • VinceVince Posts: 174
Charles Krauthammer is jealous that Barack Obama is not a Republican. How they yearn for a candidate as energetic and compelling as Obama. This is a sad attempt of trying to paint Obama as something that he is not.

Just to derail this thread with a tangent,
when i was in highschool (and still pretty damn obsessed with Jane's Addiction) i had a teacher that i really admired. I was in his social studies, philosophy, comparative religion, AND psychology classes.

One day we were going over personality disorders, and i approached him after class. I told him, there was this band i really liked, and the lead singer was definitely some sort of SPD case. I explained some of his (perry) behaviors, and my teacher was like "do you have any of it on tape? can you bring it in?" ... you could see he was pretty excited about connecting over this.

I brought in my copy of "Soul Kiss" for him, and I played a couple of parts. The "mountain song" performance, along with a few of the clips of Perry talking to the camera. Oh, and especially the part where perry is in his underwear in the bedroom with Casey Nicolli and he is trying to light bottle rockets in the house, there is a rooster in the living room, and casey is telling him "not in the house perry, not in the house." and he just goes and lights the damn thing anyway. lol.

My teachers face lit up, and he looked at me exasperated (he REALLY loved his job. lol) ... he said, "THAT is Narcissitic Personality Disorder!" ...

i said, "do you really think he has that, or do you think he is just a ham?"

He said he was pretty sure.
    :D

    I dunno.
I always just remembered that exchange.
    It was cute.

(and i'm really bored at work. lol)
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?
