anyway, i just want to say to you my admiration for your country...and ask you what does your president think about war in iraq and usa, in general...

thank you, that's very kind! :) you should visit. :D

as far as I know (and remember) our president hasn't expressed her personal point of view about the war in Iraq. which I think is good.. we as such a small country don't need any enemies.. :D but seriously I at least can't remember her commenting the situation.

generally the Finn's opinions about this matter can be divided to two groups, "it's none of our business" and "it's totally wrong!".

    ty.

so how come finns being a germanic people dont speak a germanic language??
    are they non-germic then ??

and if the sami arnt aleuts, then who are the sami related to ?? is the sami language finno-ugric ?

sorry, it's taken me way too long to answer this.

    okay, so. finns aren't germanic, we're finno-ugric.
yeah, I know, should've mentioned that earlier.. :o

the sami are are an indigenous people of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. their languages are the sami languages, which are also Finno-Ugric. the sami are the oldest ethnic group in the area they live in.
many cosider the genetic origin of the sami unsolved but there are many assumptions. modern genetic studies however show that the sami aren't at least related to the samoyedi's or other eastern folks.

    is that accurate enough? :o
I'm sorry this took me so long. really I am, but I've had a shitload of other things to do...

anyway, keep those questions coming! :D

hmm. I already answered your tennis-question, but I haven't quite figured out what to say to this.. :o

but I could use this as a quite akward transition to the voting percentages here. (sorry, don't be offended.) mainly because the percentages in the US seem very low and because we have the presidental election in February next year.
in presidental elections the voting percentage here has always been about 80. this is pretty good, but we still need to have young people voting too, as we are the future of this country and the whole world.
in local elections the percentage is lower, about 50 %.. that needs to go up too.
anyway, I still think we have these things better off here than maybe other countries..
please correct me if i'm wrong.
well, I guess that's enough of that.

"the land of a thousand lakes".. as far as I remember there are less than 1000 lakes here.. but 1000 just sounds better than something like 749. and the number of the lakes depends on the definition of a lake, what a puddle needs to be called a lake, you know. (depth etc.)
maybe not a thousand but still very many lakes!!

I am so terribly sincerely sorry but this information I gave you was totally wrong!!! I'm so ashamed and hope that you'll forgive me..
    how stupid of me!!!

there are actually many thousand lakes here. 187 888 over five are lakes to be accurate..

I am so ashamed of myself, I actually really didn't know that..
    and I am so sorry.

for what it's worth anyway, many Finns don't know we actually have that many lakes here.
    how stupid are we!
don't be mad, don't let this affect the future questons. in the future, i'm gonna do better! I swear!

    hello to everyone! :D
just decided to give this thread a small bump...
actually I just wanted to declare that today, December 6th is Finland's independece day!!! (I was too lazy to create a whole new thread.. :p ) 88 years baby! :D:D:D:D

yep, tonight is the night when all of Finland sits down in front of their TV-sets and judges the dresses of the people invited to the presidents Independence day reception. :D
it's a tradition what can you say.. :p
actually the reception is quite boring, watching almost 2000 quests shake hands with the president. but it's good fun if they have interesting clothes! :D

    thank you.
    and you are correct! :D

oh, and something not to be so proud of as a Finn, is that a year after independence (1918) we had a civil war. :o
but that's all gone now! :)

    hi,

ty for the answer. and no problem about the delay.

so the finns arnt germanic ??
yet they are blue eyed blondes ??

are the finns a isolated sort of europeans??
are they related to the balts in ethnicity and/or language??

and finally are the sami blue eyed blondes (that i guess completes all possible permutations and combinations of questions!!)

sorry, i am a bit too ethno-culturally inquisitive.

well, it could be nice to start off with Finlands independence day (if they don't know it yet), that's December 6th, and the things that led to it.. interesting stuff, I'd say. :)
and of course sauna!! not a steamroom, a proper sauna (if possible naturally :o )! or at least tell them about it.
hmm. I guess Finnish traditional dishes might be interesting. http://www.finnguide.fi/finnishrecipes/
oh oh, and KALEVALA! how could I not remember that immediately.!!
you know, our national epic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalevala
    hmm. what else.. :o
well, this is this for now, my head's kinda empty. :) I'll post again if I come to think of something new!

finnish girls are hot! personally i prefer them over swedes because there is more diversity in hair color and what not. in my opinion, scandinavian girls are some of the most beautiful in the world. no offense, eMMi, but the girls in iceland are probably the most ridiculously attractive!

We should start an 'Everything you've ever wanted to know about Australia thread' and tell everyone about our naked hot babes.

eMMI, how hot does it get in summer? And how cold in winter? Do you use metric units like normal countries?
