If people are going to take the usual short-sighted approach and turn this tragedy into another gun control debate, then count me out. I am not interested.

If anyone wants to talk about motives or other causes that actually have something to do with human agency, let me know.

It seems to happen more often in the US but these things happen all over the world, there was a similar one in Germany a few years ago as i remember, and there was a terrible one here in Scotland not so long ago where i think 13 primary school kids (aged maybe 10 or under) were shot dead.

Has there been anything said about the background or motives that this guy had in the one in the US?

It does happen world-wide. In fact, it even happens in places like Japan, only with edged weapons.

I haven't found any background info yet. Anyone who does should post it.

I agree. I was simply providing information as to what happened. I found it interesting that this was done with just handguns.

It said on sky news that it is now 32 dead so far and that the shooting lasted for over two hours.

Cant imagine what that would have been like for people in the university.
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.

i don't think this sort of behaviour is necessarily new ... it's just a lot easier to go on a rampage now then it was before ... can only speculate somone's motives but in the end - there are enough of these a year to know that this behaviour isn't isolated ... and that we can continue to expect more ...

There is a video on the sky news website that was taken by a student on their phone, can just hear loads of shots being fired. You dont see much but its still quite distressing when you know what was happening.

Sky News is also reporting that the gunman lined the students up and shot them one by one. It's so tragic, i feel for everyone involved.

The Sky News channel just showed that clip again. It's very scary indeed.

Man, this is brutal to watch and listen to, being on a college campus myself.

When I was in my undergraduate studies I would be in huge lecture halls with 150 to 300 students...now with a semi-automatic or even a handgun, imagine the damage one person could do?

I wont debate guns here, but how to do adequately secure open campuses without creating an atmosphere that would stifle the open and creative characteristics college campuses normally encompass?

Praying for the students, their families, the faculty and staff at VT, and the community of Blacksburg. This is a terrible terrible incident.

And any attempt to turn this into a discussion or make some kind of pointed remark about gun control before bodies are even cold is a shameless pathetic show of political opportunism.

Gun control is not about politics its about public safety.

The practice may be so, but the debate? All about politics.

Nope ... Its a political issue that pretends to concern itself more with public safety. Some peoples' hearts are surely in the right place, granted.
  • Hey guys, I started a gun debate thread so we could keep this one strictly to discussing information about the shooting and giving our sympathies. theres no reason someone should have to sift through 10 pages of endless gun control debate to learn something new about what happened or to read what has gone through everyone else's heart.

Tragic news. I can't believe he killed so many. 31 was the total so far last I heard, and 29 injured. Poor families and students.

If this doesn't reopen the debate for tougher gun laws, then we will be seeing a lot more of this. Unstable fuckers taking out their frustrations on innocent people and murdering them by the dozens.

My heart and prayers go out to all the murder victims, the surviving victims and all their friends and families. :(

On a slightly more positive note:

How many more students would've been in that building were it not for the campus-wide email, text messages, IMs, etc.? I've already heard at least 3 different accounts of students who were on their way to class hearing from friends who don't even go to school at VT. 30+ are dead, yes, but the technology we take so much for granted definitely played a part in helping save at least a few lives today.

just makes one thats pro gun realize a major weakness in their position.
