Unfortunately history tells us that what goes up must come down. When the traders hype up the economy and say everything is going to be just fine and dandy is usually the time it isn't.

History doesn't tell us any such thing with regards to the capital markets here. There has been a steady growth curve. There are certainly downturns and corrections, but the trend has historically been up. Not up and then back down again. That's why we continue to see the Dow set records.

  • I think everyone in Australia knew that oil played some part in some troops being sent over. On a side note I read recently that New Zealand was suspended for a time from the ANZUS treaty after not sending troops. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I think oil did play a part but the main reason is because Howard wants to be a major player on the international stage, hence getting independence for East Timor and sending troops to troubled island nations, Afghanistan and Iraq.

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZUS

The Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty (ANZUS or ANZUS Treaty) is the military alliance which binds Australia and the United States, and separately Australia and New Zealand to cooperate on defence matters in the Pacific Ocean area, though today the treaty is understood to relate to attacks in any area.

    Treaty structure
The treaty was previously a full three-way defence pact, but following a dispute between New Zealand and the United States in 1984 over visiting rights for nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered ships of the U.S. Navy in New Zealand ports, the treaty no longer applies between the United States and New Zealand, but is still in force between either country and Australia, separately.
