people trying to stop the war are being arrested, while the creators of the illegal war are walking around free, esclalating it. how does that make you feel? it sure bothers me.

Thirty Three Arrested Protesting War as Part of 'Mother of a March'

Monday 14 May 2007

Peace moms Cindy Sheehan and Tina Richards among them.

After rallying in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House more than 250 anti-war advocates marched through Washington, DC to Capitol Hill. When they reached the Cannon House Office Building they formed two circles blocking the street to all traffic.

The demonstration was the "Mother of a March" spearheaded by Cindy Sheehan whose son died in Iraq. The march kicked off a "Summer of Action" where anti-war demonstrators will SWARM on Congress from today until June 31 advocating an end to the war. Numerous speakers urged peace voters to put "peace before partisanship" as thus far the Democrats have not lived up to the mandate of the voters who elected them to end the war.

Tina Richards, a Marine Mom, whose son served two tours of duty in Iraq and now has been found by the VA to be 80% disabled, said the purpose of the SWARM is to "bring citizen pressure on Congress so that they fulfill the mandate of the American voters who put the Democrats in power to end the war."

As the demonstrators marched up Independence Avenue they chanted "Stop the Funding, Stop the War – Mothers Say, Not One More." At the Department of the Justice Department the crowd stopped with Cindy Sheehan making an impromptu speech pointing out the crimes of the Bush administration, e.g. allowing torture of prisoners, spying on Americans, loss of habeas corpus, and the firing of U.S. Attorneys. In front of the Cannon House Office Building the demonstrators formed two circles of peace with 33 refusing to move from the center of the street when ordered by the police. In the middle of the two circles was an American flag flying at half mast.

As the 33 were arrested the crowd chanted "Arrest George Bush" and "Stop the Funding, Stop the Killing." Rev. Lennox Yearwood, who was also arrested, pointed out that from the time the crowd marched from the White House to Capitol Hill two more U.S. soldiers were reported dead.

what i would like to know is - why not just say - we will pull out in 3 mths ... the "insurgents" say they are there cuz of the americans so - call them on it ...

if civil unrest is so bad - send a UN mandated team in there after ...

at the end of the day - no one is keeping track of non-american death counts anyways - just say you're gonna leave in 3 mths ...

Yeah, the UN team did such a great job in Rwanda. I'd feel better about sending a girl guide in with a rabid gopher than anything the UN has to offer.

Well they did do some kind of a good job in lebanon, and arguably (compared to nato) in serbia. Anyways I doubt they could do worse, 600k+ deaths is no small number.

YBoth you and polaris are probably correct, they'd be hard pressed to make things worse than they are. But that only tells us about the job curently being done and not about the effectiveness of the UN.

people were arrested for blocking a street; which; would bring arrest in any city no matter what they were doing there. peaceful assembly has rules and when the rules are broken; people are arrested.

Yeah, if I go out with 30 of my friends and block a public street, I am eventually going to get arrested if I don't leave regardless of what my reason for being there is.

While we don't know from this article exactly how the arrest/confrontation happened, I agree with their arrests while also agreeing with their protest.

    i was waiting for this...

i understand the reason they were arrested, and i do not dispute it. posting the article was a simple way of pointing out the hypocricy of a situation that has people trying to stop the war being arrested for simply blocking a street, while the archictects of an illegal invasion walk freely and escalate the war.

if bush was blocking a street; he'd be arrested too if he failed to comply. you should talk to your senators and congressmen that voted to go to war. they gave the approval.

i was also waiting for this. justifying an illegal invasion by stating "congress approved it"

i hold all those that voted in favor responsible, but i also hold this administration and "the decider" legally responsible for lying to justify the invasion. bush and his criminal cronies wanted the invasion, they pushed for it, they lied for it, and they got it through deciet and lies.

i'm talking specifically as a domestic issue - it is clear most americans want out of iraq ... so, why not just pull out? ... seeing as they aren't interested in reporting the actual casualty count there - i'm guessing no one will care if it turns into another war-torn country ...

Well, now, that's just bullshit. Bush blocks dozens of streets every time he visits here.

    good point
  • Streets are on fire and exploding in Iraq...

I'm sure they wish they only had minor street issues such as this.

Then maybe.... in the future you might title threads a bit more accurately ;)

I mean, since you understand they were arrested for blocking the street and NOT protesting the war.

The U.N did no job in Rwanda because they were prevented from doing a job there by the heads of member states. The U.N is only as effective as those countries signed up to it allow it to be. You should look closer to home if you want to find who is culpable for the Rwandan genocide, and the massacres at Tusla and Srebrenica.

If anybody is interested I'm reading a really great book at the moment called: Emergency Sex (and other desperate measures) True Stories from a War Zone.
It's by Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait and Andrew Thomson, three UN workers who were posted in Rwanda, Bosnia, Somalia, Haiti, and Liberia and is taken from their diaries and personal accounts. It's an EXCELLENT read and certainly a warts and all look at the UN and it's postings.

And as to the topic of the thread, well it's a damn shame that George and Co aren't arrested for crimes against humanity. I say arrest away fellas, use whatever excuse or law that you can, but the people are speaking, loud and clear. It's just a shame it appears to be having no affect on your selective deafness, or perhaps it's just a comprehension problem.
    NOPE!!!

Keep on rockin in the free world!!!!

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

blocking the street was their form of war protest. so they were arrested for their form of protest.

blocking the street is against the law. so they were arresting for blocking the street.

If their form of protest was lighting babies on fire would that be OK, then?

They broke the law. The were arrested for it. Sounds right to me. Civil disobedience at work. They got attention out of it, so they accomplished a short-term goal. Hopefully we'll see the end of the war soon, too, although I'm not convinced it will be because a handful of people played in traffic.

Was a war criminal arrested this day?
Was a deceitful politician arrested this day?
Was a mass murderer arrested this day?

If I were a cow, I would be happy eating the oats you blokes are eating with your big brown-eyed "they broke the law" stares.

    no, obviously

never said it was wrong for them to be arrested. maybe i should dumb this down for some folks. I WAS SIMPLY POINTING OUT THAT PEOPLE PROTESTING THE WAR WERE ARRESTED FOR SOMETHING AS MINOR AS BLOCKING A STREET WHEN THE REAL CRIMINALS BEHIND THIS ILLEGAL INVASION ARE WALKING FREE EATING A 5 STAR DINNER TONIGHT WHILE WE FOOT THE BILL... no rocket science here, just pointing out the hypocricy and lunacy of the current situation
Civil disobedience at work. They got attention out of it, so they accomplished a short-term goal.
    i agree

i agree it will take more than a handful

    1. it is illegal to block a street
    2. It is illegal to pre-emptively invade a country based on lies

one was arrested, the other walks free. thats my fucking point folks. nothing more nothing less
