When are we going to put pictures of livers on pint glasses? Or pictures of hearts on McDonalds boxes? What a huge pile of crap... who the fuck came up with that shite?

And for the record, they have them here and they're easily ignored since they're on the back of the pack :) I just don't get the idea to be honest.

I'd be up for all of that. The things we do to our bodies is disgusting.

Well how old are you? This is probably meant to discourage kids that are just starting these bad habits. I'll take back that I would want the heart on food, because food is needed to live, but alcohol and tobacco are two things we can live without. Kids should see what they are getting into and how it can affect their lives. I'm guessing it will have a small affect, but its better than nothing.

And yes I drink and a picture of a liver would not stop me. But it wouldn't bother me that it was on there.

I'm 28... and I believe that there are ways to prevent people from STARTING! I think the pics would have effected me less when I was starting smoking than they do now... cos when you're young you're invincible and it will never happen to you.

Unhealthy food is hardly needed to live... in fact, don't they say the opposite ;) and alcohol should not be lived without... tobacco can if you never start. Stop people from starting. Make buying cigarettes illegal for those who never smoked... those who smoke can apply for a card entitling them to buy cigarettes! And slowly phase them out as smokers drop off.

That would be such a waste of time and money. It's so much easier to put pictures of what happens when you smoke and let you decide. Its basically the same system as now (where there are warnings) but it goes one step further to make you think about it even more.

Are you saying that the pictures disgust you and make you want to stop smoking? Because thats what they're supposed to do. I'd rather look at a picture of grotesque lungs then actually have them.

And I'm not trying to be mean spirited if that's what it sounds like. Reasonable minds can differ :).

Nope, I don't want to stop smoking. However, I know it's not good for me and I certainly don't think anybody else should start. I'm pretty sure everybody agrees... however you say it would be a waste of time and money? Maybe in the very short term... but definitely not in the long term. And I don't see how it would affect anyone. It won't affect smokers cos they can still smoke (where, in the future, is a different question :D ) and it won't force them to do anything. However it means that nobody can start.. that can only be a good thing. Alcohol and unhealthy food have their purposes... they're guilty pleasures :) nuff said. If you've never smoked, a cigarette is certainly NOT a guilty pleasure.

  • My sister works retail and she laughs whenever someone asks for a pack of cigarettes "...but not the ones with the gross teeth on the front." hahahaha.

They're put there to show you that that's what your teeth/heart/lungs will probably look like by the time you die. It may not stop YOU from smoking, but it might cause someone else to think about quitting.

It's pretty dumb. Does anyone still exist unaware of the dangers of smoking? They are choosing to harm themselves, which is their decision. They should be allowed to do it without looking at rotting organs. They have enough to worry about, what with their own rotting organs etc...

Also as Helen says, there's no pictures of dying livers and bust pancreases on beer bottles etc and I'm in MUCH more danger of dying from alcohol intake than cigarettes, since I drink a lot more than I smoke. Why is no one watching MY back? :(

When more people push for it, I think. The anti-smoking lobby is pretty powerful now, so they get stuff like that pushed through. I remember seeing those cig packs when I flew through Europe in August...nasty!

I think it is aimed at the 12-14 year old dumbasses who really do have no idea what smoking actually does to you but want to start because it looks cool. Sure they know that it can kill you, but not until you are old. I remember when I used to work with kids, and there were little kid smokers who were around the age I mentioned who thought that if you smoked that you would be fine until you are old.

Well make sure the law is upheld and they don't get sold to them. Same with alcohol. Fine the store's, and anyone who supplies them. Parents whoever. Kids get into stuff like smokes cause they are bad for you. Thats the attraction. Society tells them no, so they have to try it.

I think it is true for a lot of kids the fact that it is taboo is the attraction. But I also think there are quite a few, who the only message they hear, is "don't smoke, it will kill you" which they think means "don't smoke or it will kill you when you are 60".

I agree there should be enforcement but why does it have to be that or warning lables, what is wrong with having both? Seriously what is the harm in having the labels there?

I'm a smoker and I've got no problem with the photo's on the packs. In Australia their plastered all over the packs plus they have very graphic ads on the TV constantly. I know I've become desensitised to them all now and so will kids.
We've had alot of graphic ads for speeding and its consequences over here. But we have one that shows the guy showing off for the girl spinning his wheels up and fishtailing down the road. They cut back to the girl and she's waving her little pinky in the air "little dick" style and thats the one that people remember and young fools stop and think about.

We need these people to think about what would make cigerettes a lame thing to do in a young persons mind.

That's kind of funny. In Canada one of the smoking pack lables, notes that smoking can cause impotency.

Well that would work a whole lot better.

maybe explain to them that their addiction to tobacco will eventually lead them to hurling things around the house when they they've run out and their are no shops open :p

I was at my local shop last week and I seen a guy picking out butts from the bins along the sidewalk. Maybe showing something like that might change their minds.

the ones I bought yesterday have a picture of a dead person on them   HOW the fuck can they justify that? What a load of bollox... I'm gonna swap it for a lung :)

And exactly... make it so that they're not cool... cos they certainly were when I was growing up... and, considering the amount of kids I still see smoking, I'm guessing they still are.

If you are still purchasing them then the pics sure aren't working! ;)
You've changed your place in this world!
  • I bought a pack with a dead guy on it this morning.. It was kind of cool, like an X Files trading card.

Anyway... I think the huge irony here is that they're warning us against the dangers of smoking quite forcefully, yet they'll never make smoking illegal because tobacco is one of the largest industries in the world.

There's just so much money in smoking that the corporations will never put their money where their mouth is. If they made smoking illegal I'd have no problem with it... it'd be better for everyone. But they won't. They'll preach and preach and use ugly pictures whilst simultaneously enjoying the benefits of our habits.
