Good point. I understand that this "convert or die" philosophy goes back centuries. In fact, the Catholic Church justifies some of their crusades efforts as a response to the expansion of Islam. Once they conquered Turkey, west Europe got really concerned.

However, I believe this is used, by both sides, to justify the power struggle for other more important economic factors.
