i never realized that race as a game, where you had a card that you "played". Its to my understanding that 'race' (however real 'race' is) is a historical, and social construct that has defined power relations for years, and it is a part of the context of any situation.

Actually, it's kind of ironic. Because the chiefs that set up the Casino deals in America just keep all the money. So they are stinking rich, but the rest of the natives are poor. It's not exactly like that in say Rama because it's a different Chief. Anyway, even the Natives have elitists. I get asked by natives for cigarettes and/or change a lot. Oh absolutely! Our minority here would be the 'travellers', aka 'gypsies', aka one or two other words considered offensive. Some pubs have barred them because huge brawls often break out between rival families... they then obviously sue the pubs and the poor publican suffers. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I have to generalise but there's quite a lot of crime in their society. So don't ban them, your pub gets wrecked, you pay up. Ban them, they sue you, you pay up! There was a big case a couple of years back where an old farmer had been really paranoid about them due to a couple of incidents, two pulled up to his house one day, one went around the back, the farmer got his shotgun and shot him in the back as he was running off. No one is blaming YOU. AA and other social programs aren't about blame. They are about attempting to help level the playing field and eliminate the effects of racism that are still very much plaguing ethnic minorities in the US. Jim Crow and segregation may have ended, as some are quick to point out, apx 60 years ago, but the effects of those practices are still very much apparent RIGHT NOW. 60 years ago is relatively short. True integration still has not happened. Slavery, for God's sake ended only a little over 100 years ago. That isn't that long! i won't go into graphic detail of slavery, sharecropping, Jim Crow, and segregation here as i trust most of us are at least somewhat familiar with their horrors.Think about it for a moment, reflect on it, acknowledge how the effects of such horror is undoubtedly still felt. Perhaps somethings on that list were outdated by 60 years, but other things still hold true today. To suggest that unspoken racial privilege does not still exist is quite funny. It is good that we are aware of it, and that we are looking to change it as an American society, but to suggest that we are over it or that "reverse" discrimination is more prevelant than majority discrimination is to be blinded to the light. The fact of the matter is that racism has shifted from that overt "black people and/or other minorities are awful and don't deserve anything" to more implicit cultural forms of racism.
Two examples I can think of of the top of my head in sport are the treatment of Tom Brady in the media vs. any number of black athletes who have impregnated a women then ditched her. I know a handful of us read Bill Simmons on the regular, and he suggested that somehow it was her fault and that "she pulled the goalie" to get pregnant (which somehow suggests that Tom Brady wasn't at fault for the situation). On the other hand if it were Michael Vick doing the same thing wouldn't it probably be portrayed as "just a typical black athlete getting a women pregnant"?
Further let's look at the cases of Brett Favre and Ricky Williams. Both were illegal drug users right? I mean didn't Favre steal vicodin for years to get over the pain of playing football? Wasn't he positioned as a hero overcoming his problems, and playing with pain, etc? He was a freaking drug addict for gods sakes (and I'm not saying that addiction is something to denigrate or make fun of), and the media supported him - as well they might very well should. Conversley Ricky Williams was consistently made fun of and run off to Canada for smoking pot. The fact that there's a difference in the drug rules at the NFL notwithstanding (which is interesting in and of itself b/c both drugs are narcotics and vicodin is far more dangerous), there treatment in the media is quite an interesting difference, and since this isn't a one time thing (there are countless other times when this is true) can certainly be linked to race.
