when my son was 12, he thought school was a waste and asked me to let him quit. at 14. he thought dying his hair bright red the day before court was ok. i said no. he snuck and did it anyway and pissed off a judge n spent a week in juvy. my point being kids that age really have no idea what kind of ramifications the decisions they make will have on their future.
also, teens are totally overflowing with hormones and sexual orientation is a question that crosses the mind (tho rarely talked about with friends). "During the teen years, sexual feelings are awakened in new ways because of the hormonal and physical changes of puberty. These changes involve both the body and the mind, and teens may wonder about new — and often intense — sexual feelings. It takes time for many people to understand who they are and who they're becoming. Teens — both guys and girls — often find themselves having sexual thoughts and attractions. For some, these feelings and thoughts can be intense — and even confusing or disturbing. That may be especially true for people who are having romantic or sexual thoughts about someone who is the same sex they are. "What does that mean," they might think. "Am I gay?" Thinking sexually about both the same sex and the opposite sex is quite common as people sort through their emerging sexual feelings." - http://www.teenshealth.org/
lastly, does the medical world really understand how hormonal meds will affect this child's body now and in the future? i think perhaps dressing as a female until he is an adult would have been a better option.
The idea of someone wanting to change their own gender has always baffled me but people can do what they want to themselves. However he should have had to wait to he turned 18 to undergo such changes and the taxpayer should not have had to foot the bill.

Have we lost our way tonight?
Have we lost our hope to sorrow?
Feels like were all alone

you can take the extreme stance too. we're talking about ONE thing here. we're not talking about sex...we're talking about gender-identity. so, go start a thread about adult sex with minors and we'll talk about it. you think that this child walked into a doctor's office and had the operation. that's not how it happened. you have to be more intelligent about it than you are being. note that the individual was evaluated by psychiatrists (maybe she was diagnosed for real instead of just seen for a visit and then precribed medication to treat some wide-open diagnosis). this was not something done on a whim. the surgery isn't complete yet.
12 is just too young for such a life altering permanent surgery.
he is 12. can you vote at 12? go to war? drink? smoke? no. becos 12 year olds cannot make huge, potentially life-altering decisions. this is fucking nuts and anyone who says otherwise is too.
if he wants to be a girl so bad, he can start by being the fruity gay kid.
In germany you can smoke and drink! There probably is an age but it's not enforced. But I get your point.
