I do work for free. My station only has a few paid DJ's sadly I'm too new to be incorporated on that pay chart. But some freebies are nice.

I also started a non-profit that I spring for, out of my own pocket. And I'm volunteering for "Big Brothers".

So yeah, I do work for free. And it feels great.

    who pays your rent?

I'm in the same boat for my night and weekend gig in sports radio. "Oh there won't be much money, but you may get into a few sporting events free so I've got that going for me, which is nice."

It ends up being about 75 dollars per paid remote which can go from 2-4 a month usually. It pays for a few beers on the weekends. Thankfully my day job pays the real bills.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • While I can see Sapperskunk's arguement that ticket prices are high, his premise is really a stretch. How can you compare Pearl Jam ticket prices to the Anti-Heroes, the Reverend Horton Heat, Girl Trouble or any other band you like. They are on total opposite sides of the spectrum. Pearl Jam's tickets are still below must if not all acts who are on their level. Lets look at a band you really like Divo. They are similiar to Pearl Jam in popularity. How much were their tickets when they played the Paramount last? I think they started at 50 and were as high as 75. When Girl Trouble, the Rev or the anti-heros sell millions if not tens of millions of cds and they continue to have $20 ticket prices we can have this discussion again. Until then your just comparing apples to oranges.

then whatcha whining about? those pearl jam tickets aren't coming out of your pocket anyway. if you're on a limited budget, you've got to make some choices. that's life. if pearl jam had to make a choice between higher ticket prices and corporate sponsorship, im glad they opted for higher prices. just becos YOU want them to do something different doesn't mean they made the wrong choice.

Your Devo argument is weak sucka!

How often do Devo play? Not often.
How many shows were they playing last year internationally? 20.
Did I go to that show? No.
    Did I want to? yes.
Did my morals and budget get in the way of attending that show? Yes.
Why would Devo play Bumbershoot? They wouldn't have been paid shit.

I didn't compare them to those smaller bands I like, I used those smaller bands as a reference for ticket pricing. I DID compare PJ to festivals like Warped tour or Ozzfest. Forget the popularity argument. It's about morals and hypocracy.

Check out Cincybearcat's assesment. It's perfect.

  • I wouldn't be pissed and i would watch, but it won't ever happen... Can you imagine "The Miller Half-Time show featuring Pearl Jam", just can't happen... Pearl Jam don't need that audience anyway... (well i guess)
