Okay Kudos to this thread and the MT. This is something I hadn't thought of before but is very interesting. I mean, it's funny at first but when you really think about it - DAMN it could very well be true!!!
We're talking about supressing the most basic not to mention one of the strongest, uncontrollable human emotions.
Look at the West. When we give into our temptations, we often cheat on our spouces, etc.... Okay, compare to a place like Saudi Arabia where they cut your head off if you caught being unfaithful - not to mention being hung for just being gay or getting whipped for not wearing "appropriate" clothing.
These people are being suppressed big time, so why wouldn't that result in big-time reprisal on those they can release this anger on??????
exactly. it's a tough thing to speak about though, becos it's so taboo no one will take you seriously. i also think it has effects here. that pastor who was caught up in the gay/drug scandal... i dont think he was truly gay. i think he had some normal urges but had a christian wife and they didnt do anything but missionary out of "love" and so he became obsessed with the people more free than him and stopping them becos he couldn't be as free.
sexual politics i think are a huge unspoken force in general.
- abstinence-only sex ed that drives up unwanted pregnancies, which increases abortion rates and welfare expenses
- replacing scientific doctrine with creationism at a time when the US is already falling badly behind the rest of the world in math and science
- the gay marriage nonsense
- characterization of our issues with terrorism as an apocalyptic "end-times" struggle against the evil muslims that deters diplomacy and encourages hatred, misunderstanding, and destabilizes and undermines our efforts to achieve resolution
those are the big ones. i think evangelical christians have an enormous detrimental impact on our economy by 1) distracting from solving real problems by making everything a moral war and 2) fighting to enact legislation that will have enormous economic aftershocks. in addition, there is no willingness to compromise or ability to reason with such people becos they have a black/white worldview that sees any compromise as an immoral betrayal of their religion. it's frightening.
And I disagree with all those issues. But again, Im not sure I would consider them alarming. Possibly abstinence only sex ed, but not really because they can preach that all they want, doesnt mean it is actually going to happen. And contraceptives are still readily available, and many times you can get them for free. So, I dont agree with them, but I dont find it alarming. The creationism thing I just think is silly, but I dont think it is widespread enough to consider alarming. Gay marriage, again, Im for gay marriage, but not sure I consider it alarming. And to be honest the apolacalyptic scenario I dont believed by enough people to be considered alarming. So while I dont agree with many of their stances, I cant say i find most of them alarming.

i dont know where you live then, cos even in ohio they had evolution turned out of the curriculum. abstinence-only sex ed already HAS happened. it's the only sex ed supported and funded in this country. you can buy condoms, but a lot of teens don't know where to buy them, how to use them, or the truth about their effectiveness (we're talking smart college people i knew who truly believed they were barely 25% effective cos of abstinence misinformation). it's an alarming trend of basically imposing the christian version of sharia law one peice at a time. i find that far more alarming than a bunch of british muslims who want sharia law... they dont live in my country and dont have the support to do anything about it. they can do what they damn well please in their home countries. and im sorry, but one successful terrorist attack per decade (and a 9/11 will never happen again, they got lucky) is not enough to have me shaking in my boots and alarmed. im more likely to be assaulted by a redneck in a bar for being a fag-lover than i am to be killed by an islamic fascist.

Well I understand more concern being as that is happening in your country, where terrorism for the most part isnt. But again, I agree with you on all of those issues, but I cant honestly say I am alarmed by them.
The point is that although 40% is still a minority, it is a very significant portion of Muslims. For instance if say 40% of all young Christians in the U.S. wanted biblical law, it would be HUGE news. Can you see that?
It isn't truly 40%.
You need to remember though that polls like this have a bit of a response/non-response bias in their results. On a subject like that, you're more likely to find people who support Sharia law willing to participate so it will skew the percentage. The same would go for a survey on "Biblical Law".
It's like going to a college/university and conducting a poll on legalizing marijuana. Obviously, you're going to get far more participation from students who are strongly in support of pot-smoking and feel the need to voice their support.
I still agree though that, even if this survey sample only represents 1% of UK Muslims in reality, there are plenty of other countries in the world that have Sharia law already. That 1% should emigrate to one of those places instead.
Yeah but there is no code or law to live by like Sharia..Not that I know of anyways.
Christians code is to love thy neighbor. Hardline christians arent taught nor expected to kill those of differing or no faith. Hardline muslims? Their code is to kill thy neighbor. And killing a non-believer is the key to their heaven.
I think THATS the point.
Even if its only 1% of a population, that is one scary group to have in your midst.

Sex ed currently in the states is being taught an an early age. Condoms are familiar to 7 year olds. If a teen in the US doesn't know how to use one, its because they skip school too much. Or they live in Utah.

what 7 year old knows what a condom is? quit your morally persecuted white christian act, we all know this is bullshit.
I believe that if Christians had their way, all liberals and atheists would be burned at the stake. At least the muslims are honest about their intentions.

I think that's too much to ask...
