but you COULD know asbestos is present. any building with insulation might have asbestos. or you could just post warnings: "this building contains asbestos." this is what you're advocating for food service. then people have the choice of whether or not they want to live there, or work there, or do business there. or they can go elsewhere. or wear a mask. how is asking that any different?

this is not some huge war on taking away freedom and choice. this is a government safety measure to keep a dangerous substance that has absolutely NO positive value (if you can make an argument that some people NEED transfat for their food it might be different) out of american food supplies. i see it as no different from a number of other government safety initiatives... OSHA, the EPA, CERCLA, controlled substances, prescription drugs, or whatever else. it's not saying you can't have fat, or you must eat X veggies per day, or your diet has to be like this. it's simply saying businesses that serve the public must meet certain health and safety standards. we do this daily in ever area... from mandating sound facilities and standards of service to ensuring products are designed safely and effectively. this is not a huge and novel imposition on freedom of choice. it is simply another government regulation in an area which we have, historically, had no qualms allowing the government to regulate.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree because we can continue this debate for a long time without either of us changing our minds.

i suppose. i just think that in terms of picking your battles, governments are doing much worse things to impinge on our rights than outlawing transfat. there's plenty to be outraged about out there, not sure why this one has people so wound up.

If it was this alone, no I wouldn't be as bothered but this is just one more instance on top of an already large mountain of times where our government infringes on our rights.

i never cared much about food except when it would be ready. then i worked on the kill floor of a slaughter house and saw the sickly animals getting into the food chain. i was told the healthier animals are kept for breeding.
fox reported last night that the ban is expected to span nationwide soon. at least someone is starting to look at what we eat.

pretty much everything that is common is an example of it.

That's why each case should be examined independently of one another. Trans fat is something no one will even miss, except for the negative side effects. But other things that people enjoy or benefit from is another story.

Abook I'm past that point. My utter disgust over the handling of our government is to overwhelming for me to do that.

Well, I can certainly identify with that feeling.
