From lewrockwell.com:
"millionaire socialists rock stars who presume to act as the "conscience of the world" insufferable:

Bono, the lead singer of the band U2 is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous. He is playing a U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland when he asks the audience for total quiet.

Then in the silence, he starts to slowly clap his hands, once every-few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he says into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."

A voice with a broad Scottish accent, from near the front of the crowd, pierces the silence......."Well, stop doin' it then!""

While Bono can be a bit over-bearing at times, he does champion a lot of causes that without him would never get any recognition at all.

that's good; but my problem is with people who use their celebrity status for personal attention. my mum once told me that the loudest prayer is the one spoken in silence. if your intentions are the cause; where does your personal "pat on the back" come in? the unrecognised donations far exceed his. those who dedicated their lives to go to africa and help are nameless and faceless. it's cool he's doing something but how many people there actually donated time or money to the cause?
all the big names that spoke of global warming didn't do much. now that coastal town are being relocated people are listening. dramatics never help a cause.

  • dramatics never help a cause? Are you kidding?

Silent prayers are not going to help people in Africa, I am sorry, that is the way it is.

I really like that anyone who makes a lot of money and champions certain causes is a hypocrite. Hopefully we can just stop these hypocrites from championing these causes, take some attention from them and forget about them. It's all worth it if we can call someone out.

wow; that was taken out of context. the silent prayer comment was to show that those in the field are doing much more. the unsung heros so to speak.
bono's dramatics never effected me one bit. seeing what is actually happening hit me hard.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

my extended family not only donates millions to causes; some are in africa and other places actually helping. we can put the family name on the donations and be recognised but who would this recognition help? only the family name. to me that is selfish. donating the net profits from a concert draws more attention then hand clapping. all it did was make a joke out of him.

Provided this incident actually happened somewhere - isn't it possible that people in the audience didn't really think about Africa much? Bono likely does donate millions (I'm not sure - but bear with me) - and now, maybe some people in the audience are contributing to those millions themselves.

If you had millions of fans, thousands of whom were fanatical enough to latch on to your every word, you'd be foolish not to take advantage of that influence in order to raise money and awareness for a cause you care about.

Good for them (seriously, I know that that phrase looks sarcastic).

Perhaps U2 members donate money to causes we do not know about. Probably. And if we know about every cause, it is probably because someone else is finding it out and feels the need to tell the world.

But there is something else here--If U2 or someone has a cause and a huge fanbase, expressing support for a cause may get others to give some thought to it. And it's not like he's campagining for a candidate. He's talking about humanitarian causes. Therefore, there is more in it than just "good pub for U2." A silent donation is nice, but brings no other money to it. I assume your extended family would not be able to raise awareness the way U2 can, so for them, maybe publicizing would only be about self-promotion.

BTW, I cannot stomach U2's music and get a little sick of Bono, but they could just go into the tabloids and flash their cars, houses and bling. Instead they try to bring attention to humanitarian causes. I can't fault that.

Doesn't the end justify the means? If it's Bono clapping or you donating anonymously, the world is becoming a better place. Should Pearl Jam not have put every charity they donated to from this tour in DEEP? I just don't get how publicizing a cause is bad?

    what was your band?

and when do you get ordained for sainthood? cos in the last 2 days ive learned that you've been in a famous band, donated millions of dollars to african relief, and spend all your free time helping abused and neglected children. dont break your fingers tooting your own horn there. doesn't seem to me like you've got any room to point fingers at bono. apparently you're a regular renaissance man. something about your stories doesn't jive.
