WASHINGTON — Iraq war protesters broke up a press conference by House Democrats on Wednesday with chants to bring American troops home from Iraq.

Chanting "de-escalate, investigate, troops home now," the protesters disrupted a briefing aimed at outlining priority goals when Democrats take over the House and Senate on Thursday.

Cindy Sheehan, an anti-war activist and mother of a soldier who died in Iraq, led the group to Capitol Hill to warn Democrats that party activists expect them to end the war in Iraq and confront the White House on a change in Iraq strategy.

"We didn't put you in power to work with the people that have been murdering hundreds of thousands of people since they have been in power," Sheehan said. "We put you in power to be opposition to them finally and we're the ones who put them in power."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., cut the press conference short when protests drowned out his voice through a dozen microphones set up to record his comments. Emanuel said Democrats would go back to the caucus room and return later.

LOL, how fucking stupid are these protesters? Instead of trying to work with the new party in power, lets alienate them and marginalize ourselves further!! And, let's yell so loudly that they have to move the conference into a private caucus room so we can't be involved or hear what they're saying!!

    Goddam they're slick.

that is the same term the united states used to describe suicide bombers when they were fighting the russians.... in fact, that is exactely what we called osama bin laden when he was fighting the russians. they only switch from freedom fighters to terrorists when we are the ones occupying their countries. also, i thought you would be happy to see someone protesting democrats.

I guess it depends which side of the fence you are on......does not reflect my views but their are opposite opinions out there.....just a matter of perspective I guess....I see them as PART of the problem....as I do America for being there as PART of the problem.....

i worry that she will lose sight of what she is fighting for.

although, the dems are allowing this war to go on as well, so bark away Cindy! Her cause is to end the war, so by any means neccessary if that's your cause.

Her message is the same, but the power behind that message was diluted years ago. When she first started her campaign. Just a mother looking for an answer, it was power. There was something so tragic about it. you couldn't help but feel for her loss. The minute MoveOn.org and the Democrats jumped on and used her to help propel their agenda the message started getting all muddy and lost it's power. You stopped feeling sorry for this woman and all of a sudden it wasn't a mother wanting answers but it was someone with a political agenda. Had she just told all the hanger ons thank yopu but no thanks I'm doing this for my son not for your career or agenda she would still have my respect to this day.

I love this article, how it refers to Cindy Sheehan as the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq. Anonymous soldier? The guy had a name, have some goddamn respect. Let's try not forget about Casey shall we? Even though I believe she has.

To gain momentum and strength behind a cause often you'll have to organize. We may not agree with MoveOn but she obviously did.

Maybe she did agree with them but in the end associating herself with them only hurt her cause. There are many moderates and even Republicans that I know who where really supportive of her cause up untill MoveOn, Air America, Michael Moore, etc joined in. Then they felt that her motives where driven by partisan politics and not just the desire of a mother to find out why her son had to die.

It doesn't seem to too partisan to me considering she's blasting the Dems for supporting the war, as well. I think she made a personal choice to organize with groups she saw as sharing her view and that could help get her message out. We don't have to support her organizations or agree with her move. But to act as if it's not about her son and the anti war movement but just about publicity and power is a bit of a stretch used mostly by the war supporters, imo.

I agree that we shouldn't judge her motives, but the organizations she sided with tend to be very one sided and to people, who would otherwise support her, this really turned them off to her.

Yes we know the Dems suck and the Republicans have built a utopia in the past 6 years of complete control.

  • Wait a min, we can't criticize Mother Sheehan, a puppet she may be. She is a victim nonetheless. Her son was exploited by a cruel and heartless country for an unjust war. That woman is a warrior. That woman has moral authority. She is on a crusade, as hapless as it may be, to stop a killing and raping machine dead in its tracks.

No, only Democrats promise a utopia. And they WILL live up to their promise.

I can agree with that. I just think it's wrong to say she never cared about her son or has forgotten him when they have no way of knowing how she feels. That's just really low.

Oh and thank you for the intelligent discussion on the matter. :) It's so rare to be able to discuss these things here without the usual idiotic remarks such as liberal scum and now the new 'whore of babylon'.

You miss the point. You criticize Democrats, which by the way they deserve as much blame for the current state as the Republicans, yet the Republicans have been in total control for 6 years. Look at the state of our country, look at the mess created in the Middle East, look at the fiasco of Hurrican Katrina, look at the increase size and scope of the Federal government, look at the uncontrolable spoending by our government. All done while the Republicans have been in control. I'm no fan of the Democrats, but if I was a Republican I wouldn't be bragging much either.

I chalk it up to this my team is better than yours mentality. People are so entrenched in this mind set that they are unwilling to even hear what the other side has to say. You can almost see them putting their fingers in their ears and say "NAH NAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU". Neither side has all the answers and both sides are right and wrong. Untill we as a nation realize that, and stop listening to politicians and their entourage of commentators and handlers telling us what to think, we will never be able to regain control of our government.
