what do you all think? has the government gone to far with this? and should it apply to all places? i think to much government is really bad really bad....
i think the only thing diners should have to have is smoking and non smoking sections but it could be their call to go smoke free... clearly places like hospitals and health care places should be smoke free... but what is wrong with the break room for smoking ..... i remember going to the basement of my school to get the janitor for a mop and he was in the breakroom smoking...
i never thought for one minute man he shouldnt be smoking in here..... and this was like ten years ago... you cant smoke on school grounds but if in your car you sit in the parking lot and smoke... makes sense write... and towns are going smoke free all around me its crazy.... especially for bars......wow you can kill your liver but not your lungs...... what your kidding this is sofa king stupid.... anyways your thoughts please

When it crossed the line from respecting others health to banishing smokers, it was too far. I agree others shouldn't have to inhale second hand smoke, but smokers shouldn't legally have to go 3 blocks down the street to have a cigarette. That's just ridiculous, that's just over the top.

Just wait in a few months everyone will be complaining about cigarette butts being all over the ground. That's where we are at in London, ON. It's just stupid, I mean what the fuck do they expect to happen?

I don't mind smoking restrictions in public places. I do mind smoking bans on private property in private establishments. I am not a smoker, but I am a fan of liberty.

Privately owned places, I feel, should be able to make their own rules regarding smoking..

Have some compassion I say, I smoke 800 of these fucking things every month. Do I want to? Absolutely not, but it's just not that fucking simple.

Shit, everyday I inhale car fumes like crazy and it's disgusting, if I'm forced to inhale that shit then people can suffer a little bit of tobacco smoke from time to time.

I'm not one of those diehard anti-smoker people, but I hate being somewhere and stinking like smoke.
If you wanna smoke, simply step outside.
Hell, I used to smoke (casually) and I think it's nasty!
  • Smoking should be illegal in publicly owned buildings because people have to enter those buildings at times. Those people don't deserve to inhale second hand smoke.

In privately owned buildings, the government has no right to tell them they cannot allow smoking. Next they'll be telling me I can't smoke in my own house.

Ok, but when you step outside you can't escape the car fumes, how can I as a non-owner of a car, force all you SUV driving assholes to take your vehicles to a different planet?

no one is being told that they can't smoke. they are be told that they can't smoke where it affects other people. the act of someone drinking in a bar doesn't affect another person...but, the act of smoking DOES affect other people...there are smoke rooms all over the world...they're called OUTSIDE. if people really need to smoke that badly then smoke away...but stay away from me with it.

That drove me crazy in Hawaii. We were there in December for the concert after they passed the strict non-smoking law. They have no ashtrays in the very few places that smoking is allowed so it's just a mess.

Likewise with the perfume, bad breath and flatulence. Stay away from me with that shit, it's toxic and my lungs feel like they are going to collapse as my throat involuntarily closes.

That has already happened. Can't remember exactly where, but in a condo somewhere.

Yea, I figured a good compromise would be to allow some kind of designated smoking area. But in london now you can't even have that. You used to be able to smoke on the patios at bars, but people complained to the gov now you can't do that either. It's just gone way over the top and the environment is paying the price. I've said this before you CAN'T get everyone to do whatever you think they should do. While I agree littering butts sucks, people are going to do it unless they have a designated area with proper disposal units.

In my opinion smoking is a cultural habit, no one would smoke now if smoking was never allowed before. So in-part we all have a responsibility to recognize it as a part of our culture and take reasonable steps to eliminate it. The same goes for alcohol, it's a terrible thing to have people drinking all the time like it's the purpose for life.

Nobody forces you to patronize private establishments that allow smoking. if you don't like it, don't vote with your dollars. Go to a non-smoking establishment and support the owner.

That's funny because at Heathrow they had smoking areas that weren't separated at all and some of the bars also allowed smoking. We figured England was pretty "middle of the road". I understand it in public buildings, etc., but when it's outside or in someones home, it just seems silly.

Dude, you need to understand, breaking-up with your GF is a piece of cake next to smoking. Shit, even getting over a family death is a walk in the park.

Cigarettes with all the added crap are the most highly addictive substance commercially available. It's ridiculous. You can tell kids it's bad for them, but their executive functions are developed enough to fully comprehend the consequences. Some may, but not all. They become the victims of the tobacco industry, that's what they are victims. The industry is a victim of greed as well. We just need to approach it differently.

pfft, that's been like that for a while now here. no smoking indoors anywhere, except for your own home. the only problem i have with that is not being allowed to smoke in a bar. i mean, it isn't driving me crazy if, when i go out, i have to go outside to smoke. it's just....come on, now. no smoking in a bar? seems a bit much to me.

Heh, I forget to specify sometimes, London, ON, Canada :)

lol, you did not just compare molesting children with smoking in public, did you?

I would say they are two completely different things. We don't really know why people molest children, some theories point to retarded sexual development, but no one really has the answer on that.

Smoking on the other hand, we know is a result of chemical dependencies in the brain.

I can imagine that it is difficult to quit, but should society suffer because you got hooked?

should a jury go easy on someone who accidentally caused a fire because they needed their nicotine fix, but then fell asleep with a lit cigarette?

if you become a degenerate gambler and turn to crime, should the poker website be held accountable?

nope...i was asking how far society must go to accomodate "sick" people....i used child molesters as an extreme example.

No. The examples you gave though were for irresponsible people. Society shouldn't suffer, but as of today at least, smoking is legal. There should be some places that they can smoke. I agree with most of it, but think it has almost gone too far, at least in some places. :)

Come on you can't compare this. You need both just the same, and if you had to transplant one, it would probably be easier to transplant a liver.

Smoking is a disgusting habit. I don't really think the gov't should be telling private business owners whether people can smoke in their businesses, but I will say its nice to go to a bar and not smell like shit afterwards.
