Interesting article. Are you trying to equate money and happiness? Money and physical security?

Abook, I love you and all but I think you need to focus and understand the role you think money has in life, and more importantly in love and happiness.

If love is a labour, I'll be it's slave.

Yeah, the best use of resources if you're one of the lucky ones....doesn't seem to much like the best system for those going without. It's just not working for me when I see so many impoverished throughout the world...but if you feel this is the best it can get..that's on you, don't expect me to agree. Most of the world's wealth is owned by a small percentage while a huge, huge number have shit...oh yeah, the best!
You are mixing up two things, the use of resources and the distribution of wealth. It's been proven emperically that the capital economic system makes the most efficient use of reources. This has been proven time and time again. Howver it's not very good at distributing wealth. The distribution of wealth is where governments step in. If governments are failing at this, which I believe they are, it's not the fault of the capital economic system. It's governments fault, and that responsibility and accountability ultimately falls on you and me.

It's also the fault of individuals who make the decisions of what country to exploit for it's resources and low cost labor. There's more than enough wealth to completely end poverty but it's still alive and well. As long as decisions are based on profit and profit alone...we will continue to see this huge inequality. And we all know who has bought out the government...so yes, capitalism has major flaws and it's very evident.

It's hard to be happy when you're dying from things that can easily be prevented. It's also hard to keep on smiling while you put your children to bed at night with no food in their bellies.

What makes you think Speedy doesn't do this already through charitable donations? It's not hard to believe that the capitalistic system makes the best use of resources (proven over and over again) and still believe in a distribution of income via taxes and charitable donations. It's not a hard concept, it baffles me that so many on this board don't get it. It's not an either or proposition.

Good for you. Too bad everyone doesn't find the success you have in life. That must be the answer to why so many live in poverty...they're just standing around with their hand out.

IN about 1983 or something a LAbor (sicialist style) govermnmet was elected, adn one of their key aims was to reduce the polarization of wealth. By the end of about 10 years of them, polarization of wealth was way worse. What they did basically was wipe out the middle class, and decimate small business, mainly through cracking down on tax claims. They forgot that the money which was being spent as tax deductions was still being re-cycled through the economy, giving jobs and being spent.

They tried to make eveyone rich, but that can't happen, so they made everyone poor instead.

What really matters is not that there are rich individuals, which is anathema to socialist systems, but where the mean lies.

I think what he is saying is that when you give people stuff, that is all they will ever have.
When you give too much welfare ( and I stress "too much), and ask for nothing in return, you make people poor, not wealthy. They do not learn how to provide for themselves.

that must be it...people must just decide to be impoverished because they didn't feel like eating, having proper healthcare or having a home. They're just so unmotivated! rarely do people's circumstances fit this simple reasoning.

Again, you are completely turning around what is being said. I don't think either of us are trying to compare what happens in developing countries to what happens in Oz or the US.
It is still true however, that giving stuff is no more than a short term solution. These aid programmes have been going on for decades, and the problem is still there.
Stable government, no war, land care and husbandry, irrigation programmes etc are required to produce long term improvementss.
While the leaders in these places are more interested in spending money on armies, all the donations in the world will make little difference.

i could type out a huge responce.
but i will pass on doing so.(keeping it short)

for example, i read this up above.
"These aid programmes have been going on for decades, and the problem is still there".

decades is so small of a time period when it comes to helping out
a huge vast continent filled with strife, poverty, disease,
plague epidemics, misery, uneducated, civil war, corruption,
all this and more X's many, many, millions of ppl.

good luck with your (putting a time limit/budget on) helping the recovery
of the less-fortunate weaker people we share this Earth, this life with.

So basically, when it comes to helping people we shouldn't concern ourselves with efficiency or effectiveness? As long as we're doing something we're good to go! Woohoo.
