  • Holy Crap that's a lot to post back from.

Anyhow. Original question, what is it to demand payment as a collective based only on the argument that you exist, therefore you're entitled to it?

I would say I dont base it only on the fact that I exist, merely that there are those that deserve payment and those that don't. It's called compassion. (No, I am not a tree hugger from the 60's. I have always agreed with Welfare reform)

Hmm...compassion, eh? Ok, let's try this: You shouldn't tax me because you should have compassion for me.
How could I answer a question that wasnt my position to start with?

Ok, I'll reword based on the above: what is it to demand payment as a collective based only on the argument that I should have compassion, therefore you're entitled to it?
I think you would find that those services you did feel compelled to pay for might not be as good without the combined power of everyone else using your payments. (For instance, how good would your roads be if they were made by my children who I kept out of school to save on the taxes?)

Probably not very good. But I have no interest in roads built by slave-children, nor would I ever pay for that. I would, however, pay for roads in an honest exchange between someone who could demostrate that they could build me a good one.
I respect your opinion, but I still find it selfish. Admittedly my opinion is selfish too, but I like to think that a selfishness based on the greater good is better than a me 1st attitude.

Here's the thing: my position is selfish. And so is yours. The difference is that my moral code doesn't require me to be both selfish and ashamed of it at the same time.

That depends on the district. Some conservative Dems won in more conservative areas, and some liberal ones won in more liberal areas.

more conservative democrats won than liberal democrats.

Possibly. I haven't looked at each of the 28 seats the Democrats took away from the Republicans. All I know is that there's a little of both.

But, the liberals are in charge, right? And the voters knew the liberals would be in charge, right? And the Republicans are thinking of nominating Guiliani in 2008, right?

Seems like we may be swinging away from the right.......right?

That's the only thing that bothers me about welfare, it shouldn't be about demanding, it should be about giving and helping.

Yep. Except the problem there is that "giving" requires your judgment, as does "helping". And your judgement could easily get in the way.

Don't suppose we could impeach 'em both? Cheney and his secret energy meetings sure didn't do much for America.

    Pelosi...president?

I dunno how I feel about that, either.

True but troops won't be out before the presidential election in 08. And the president still sets policy.

I think you may be surprised. With Rummy gone, all options in Iraq are on the table. I think Rummy played a much larger role in our failures in Iraq than most people realize. With him gone, things can change quickly.
