lol You just sold his statement for him...
What, voting for a moderate conservative who leans left? I don't think thats a hard thing to do for a person with centrists views.

Actually no. I don't believe in trends. I have a free mind.

Unlike someone in Chicago that just loves this Obama fever. Catch it!
I've been hoping he'd run long before he was even considered a possible candidate. Stop making excuses.

Sure. Why not. But you missed my point... But it's OK. I'm tired of this thread.

  • I honestly believe you have a distorted view of the opposition. Do you really think there is a significant portion of the VA population that would "eat up" racist remarks? Do you honestly believe that racism has a home in the republican party today? Step outside 1968 and into the presant.

I didn't call any of them racists. I said that there was a portion of the audience that responded favorably when Allen went out of his way to point out and ridicule a guy who looked different than the other 99% of the people in the room.

Put it this way: If the dude from Webb's campaign had been white, would Allen have addressed him with a nonsense word like "Macaca" or welcomed him to America?

Aw, I thought we were having a real discussion. I'm supposed to step out of 1968 and into the pissant?

No, I believe he meant present.

Another reason to like Obama? He's caused all the veins in the hard-line, unswayable conservatives necks to bulge.

If he stays this untouchable now that the shit will really be slung at him, I suspect those veins will start popping.

    Not really.

Essentially, he established an illegal dictatorship. He ignored the constitution and enlarged the federal government.

    He did poorly.

LOL, I'm not being militant here - I'm just curious how you can feel comfortable making such asertions. Is it becuase you're on a message board, or do you truly feel that Lincoln did a poor job as president?

Seriously, how does it make you feel that pretty much nobody would agree with you in terms of academics or historians, aside from basically most of the world...

Obama is just what this country needs right now. Sometimes you just need a leader who the country can believe in and bring the country back together. Does he have ALL the right ideas? No. Does he have some very good ideas? Yes. Is 4 years as a US Senator too little experience to lead a nation? Not a chance.

Much Agreed... I think it is his race to lose.

Republicans are skeered of Obama. They should be. Thats why they resort to trying to discredit the man by emphasising his, actually rather common middle name, and playing up that his last name rhymes with osama. Its very Kindergarten. Here, have a grahm cracker and a carton of milk, its almost centers time. Freakin' babies.
Furthermore, how much experience did Bush have? Thats a stupid fuckin' argument.
The problem is the right will obviously say he's to liberal, and the left will say he isn't liberal enough. They're both so far off the fuckin' charts that someone sensible freaks 'em out a little bit.

Yeah, I've watched Sean Hanity and O'Reilly bash the guy already for no good reason other than he doesn't represent "THEIR" values or something. Republicans better choose the right time to pounce on Obama, or it will end up backfiring on them.

Here's how I see it playing out... McCain and the other frontrunner Republicans will go on record supporting the "surge" which will fail miserably. Therefore, the Republicans are toast, as the surge will unravel and the troops will come home humiliated right before the election. That means the 08 race is between Hillary and Obama.

I think he honestly wants to bring a new style of politics to America, and get away from the bipartisan crap that has enveloped Washington ever since Clinton took the White House.

He is young and isn't tied to a party line or a voting record. He hasn't been corrupted by Washington. He is extremely well spoken and very intelligent.

I think he is the most honest politician I've ever heard of. He has admited to using coke and pot, and doesn't hide from that or deflect it. That speaks alot to me about his character, and lessens my skepticism about his sincerity towards a new style of politics.

You specifically? Not really. I suspect no matter who's elected in '08, he or she is still likely to kick in your front door, point a gun at you, and steal a third of your money. ;)

There's also another aspect to his "meteoric" rise. If he wins the Presidency for two terms, that's it for him as far as elected office goes. No one goes back to the Senate or becomes governor after holding that office. That would mean 4 years in the Senate and 8 in the White House - 12 years and he's done. That's gotta sound good to anyone (like me) who believes that the longer you're in, the more likely you'll become a crook.

Hopefully he'd choose to stay active in the party after his two terms were up. I could see him in a Bill Clinton role: the elder statesman, fund raiser, philanthropist, etc.

Plus, they might actually stop calling him Barack Osama by then.

  • So let me see if I understand this. Barak Obama is promising to "change" Washington politics? Has he described how that change would happen? More importantly, what would it change into?

what i find interesting about the experience comments being made is that this administration has more experience than what other administration in history? and look where we are! you can have all the experience in the world and come from some other reasonably successful administrations and still really fuck things up. i think it really has more to do with the people, and not just "experience."

one thing i like about obama is that i think he can really, and does really, want to work with others--instead of against them, like what we've been seeing lately.

oh and i just love seeing the extreme right-wingers get all worked up! :)

    obama 2008!

that's a good point. we could go back to civil service not being a lifelong career. i mean he's already, what, 45? this might be perfect.

    Two examples:

He's worked on legislation that would require transparency in all federal spending. This is aimed specifically at earmarks added onto spending bills. If a member of Congress in either the House or the Senate proposed additional spending on an appropriations bill, he/she would be connected to it on an internet database accessible to the public.

He also supported setting up an independent ethics panel to oversee Congress, since it was pretty evident that Congress wasn't doing a very good job at overseeing itself.

    obama 2008!

    Me too. :)

i think they know they have no one to compete.
Most of all, the right is terrified because he threatens to break the stranglehold the right seems to have on the "religious" vote. By turning the discussion to issues such as poverty, war, the environment etc. while demonstrating how these issues are far more significant and paly to faith far more than "gay marriage" or "abortion" Obama will wake the "religious" voter up to things that really matter. If, and when that happens (its happening already) the right is screwed!

Ok, cool. What is the status of these things?

You'd have to check for yourself, but i believe that the transparency bill passed, but the independent ethics committee never got off the ground because it was brought up during the last congress.
