There's something to your arguement, but would you apply that standard to Reagan? He was hugely popular and considered by many to be extremely telegenic.
As far as Obama, I'm not really understanding the level of animosity I'm seeing towards him. None of the guys that are positioning themselves to run have offered anything substantial as far as initiatives or policy proposals. Why should Obama have to roll out a 9 point plan to fix Social Security if Newt Gingrich doesn't?
Reagan was very good with the media...but he was committed, and as it turns out...defined an ideology. He is the reason why the US is different than Europe in the present day.
My point isn't really with Obama, or Newt (whom I find to be a vile human being) it's about our current way of choosing leaders. We focus on personal qualities rather than ideas...and I think it sucks. ALL of the current candidates (besides kucinich and tancredo) are like that. That's why I think we lack leadership.
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Sure. That's why the GOP courted the Hispanic vote so heavily in 2004, because none of them can vote. Genius.
Heh.
Many hispanic voters are legal citizens. Hispanic-American vote may be a more proper term. And you also have the hispanic vote consisting of illegals, which to be frank, neither party is in any real hurry to suppress.
But yeah, you're the smartest guy in the thread.

I agree to a great extent, but my liberalism biases me, and I feel that we'll hear more worthy ideas from an Obama campaign than we're likely to get from a Tancredo campaign. Tancredo definitely has a concrete "idea" for the country, but I happen to think it's a big flaming turd.

haha, yeah, and that's what I think about kucinich of course...I just respect the embracing of ideas rather than personalities when it comes to politics.
My ideal Republican candidate would be Santorum, but I am a right wing whacko...and I know that would never happen.
But my overall point is that I'm just looking for SOMEONE, of either party, to start speaking the truth instead of vagaries so they can become a political rock star. And my criticism isn't just at obama, but also at McCain, Rudy, and Mit. I think everyone is looking for leadership, regardless of party.

I'm not...I'm just very disappointed in the field of GOP candidates. I'm not excited about ANY of them....actually...i hate all of them. George Allen would have been great but the drive by's killed him. I really wish Santorum would run b/c I think he could win if he had money!
Basically...I just want a committed liberal to run against a committed conservative to run. I hate the mushy bullshit guys like Obama and McCain bring to the table.

Drive-bys? The media was just being fair and objective to the people.

The drive-by media would never have been able to "kill" George Allen's campaign if Allen hadn't gone out of his way to ridicule a funny looking "Macaca" at a public campaign event. He chose to single out "Macaca" because he knew that doing so would appeal to a certain segment of his constituency. I'm sure that the people the remark was intended for absolutely loved it, but lots of other people didn't.

do you HONESTLY believe that he thought he was intentionally making a racially insensitive remark? I just don't...and I think it's kind of pathetic that we've reached that point...where someone slips up (obviously it wasnt an intentiaonal racial slur) and their career is ruiend. To me, it's more disturbing that we value people who don't really offer any opions at all, and want to elect them as our next leaders.

I doubt he had to come up with "macaca" so he wouldn't call the dude a "sand nigger", but I have no doubt in my mind that he picked out the guy who looked different from almost everybody in the room and ridiculed him for the benefit of a segment of the audience that would eat it up. He also exhorted the crowd to "welcome him to America, and the real world of Virginia". Macaca was probably already familiar with the state, being as he was born and raised there.
"Of course it hurts. You're getting fucked by an elephant."
I'll remember that next time you post on a public message board.
Don't be so defensive about your crap team or that crappy celebrity politician. He certainly fits with what liberals think this country needs. He's a star!
We get it already. Kerry just has a bad sense of timing. Allen, well, he may as well be a Klansman. Like... Ohhhh I don't know... The senior Senator from West Virginia?
Of course that was a long time ago wasn't it... I really shouldn't bring that up now.

I'm not a liberal and I can understand your distaste in him. If he was a conservative, I bet you'ld think he was a god. Don't make excuses for your real reasons of not liking him. Fine, you don't agree with his views, no need to tear him down only on the basis of him being likable. I would have easily voted for McCain had he not supported Bush's ass-raping of Iraq.

Hey, we could be wrong. We think the country might benefit from an Obama campaign and possibly an Obama presidency.
In 2000 and 2004, conservatives thought that the country needed to elect a semi-literate doofus who likes to play army with other people's sons and daughters.
Maybe we're both wrong, who knows?

I honestly believe you have a distorted view of the opposition. Do you really think there is a significant portion of the VA population that would "eat up" racist remarks? Do you honestly believe that racism has a home in the republican party today? Step outside 1968 and into the presant.
