Ok.
With out sounding like a total freak,
the market has me scared shitless right now.

I don't know what is going to happen. no one does.
but my gut just isn't groovin' on this shit.

I am 90% confident in 1 thing ... when i wake up today (okay, it's 5 am and i am still up from yesterday) ... i am most likely going to sell my stock. all of it.
yes ... all of it.

i can't take it.
it's up. it's down.
cramer says we're all gonna die.
the fed throws money at us.
the dollar goes down.
iran is the devil.
wall mart sucks.

i don't care.
i don't want to think about it.

DOES ANYONE OWN GOLD?

I am most likely going to start digging in to it heavy.
i don't know where to start.
i like the south american shit here: http://www.steinbergs.com/
the stuff from the 1700's
it speaks to my inner gold lover.

ok.
so maybe i should be practical and buy the new buffalo US mint coins?

i dunno.

Will they try to confiscate it when the economy tanks?

Anyone?

Ok.
so i erased and de-emotionalized a lot of my original post (yes the above is de-emotionalized, believe it) ...

i need a less crazy person to give me a barometric indicator?

or i could probably just use some sleep.

let me go work on that.

ooh but looking at old gold coins is SO MUCH FUN.
why didn't i start doing this years ago?
my portfolio in stock is still pretty much what it was ....
which is to say, unimpressive at best.

  • "If it gets bad enough, they’ll declare a national economic emergency. They’ll take over the banks, all business and industry. They may even try to confiscate our gold. I served on the Gold Commission for eight or nine months while I was in Congress along with fifteen other members. I brought up the subject of confiscation. The power to confiscate gold is still on the books as the law of the land. I urged the full Commission to recommend Congress repeal the power to confiscate gold in an economic emergency. We pushed it to a vote and I was the only one that voted to recommend to Congress that we never again contemplate taking the gold of the American people. The fifteen other members voted it down. The power is still there on the books, and they can do it any time they wish."

If you are going to invest in gold? Make sure you get the actual gold in your hands. If you don't it is just a piece of paper like your stocks and we all know what can happen with them. Glad that I was into collecting coins while I still lived at home and had disposable income to toss around on pretty round things. Silver, gold, platinum, they all add up to asset. Good, physical, asset.

Now is definitely not the time to sell your stocks. You're guaranteeing the loss. If anything, buy more stock now.

And I have no faith in gold or silver. I wouldn't spend a penny on it.

  • Drifting, I was thinking the same thing at almost the exact same time.

I've got a few ounces of golder and silver bars, but was thinking. Yeah what good is a peice of paper? grown from trees.

At least metals have to be mined laboriously and purified...much harder and valuable in any situation so yeah. Thinking of buying up some more.

The Ron Paul quote on confiscation is unbelievable. I can't believe I read that, they voted that, or he even said that. Shocking to say the least.

It would all have to be a step away from prison camps to enact that though, so I doubt anyone will be knocking on your doors (knock on wood...haha) demanding to search your house.

Gold, silver, diamonds etc...are always going to fluctuate but remain valuable...compared to ink and pressed wood pulp.

I know a family that escaped from South Africa with a stash of diamonds and rubies. They had to leave everything else there: their house, cars, furniture etc... but sold what they could into diamonds and rubies to smuggle out and leave.

I got to hold and look at most of them, my eyes were like this O-O

They lived in an electrified barb wired many acre farm with live in servants so they had some wealth. Really makes you stop and think sometimes.

Not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Immediately following a selloff and correction is precisely the wrong time to sell, unless your investment strategy is buy high / sell low. I've found that is a tough way to make money.

I admit to being cynical. I guess I just don't understand why 'the market' means so much to someone. It doesn't mean anything to me.

That is subjective advice. If it is going south (god forbid) you've just shot yourself down the rabbit hole. Just saying. It's a gamble. Like they say, don't play what you can't expect to lose.

They would have to honor the old currency for trade in though if it did happen.

    Wouldn't they?

But "the market" is more than just shares on an exchange. The entire national and even global economy can suffer when the market declines. Just about every single person reading this is affected by both economic downturns and economic growth.

    ok.
even if i sell now, giving the historical basis of most of my stock, i would be selling INCREDIBLY high ...

however, regardless ... say i was selling 15% below what i paid ... WHO CARES?

In my mind this is now about damage control, and wealth preservation ... not accumulation ...

shit, even if i was down 50% i would consider cashing out.
it's better than going down to 0.
    :(

and whomever said they have no faith in gold & silver, zero, would not put a penny in to it.

WTF? That make ME sound sane.
How can you not have faith in the ONE thing that has held value for over 6000 fucking years?

??? can ANYONE give me any links explaining why gold will suddenly just tank in value ???

everything i've read says China (having just made gold legal to own in 2004) and India (largerst consumer of gold) are going to be driving the price of gold up steadily in coming years, along with Russia who is actively adding gold to its bank reserves.

All that aside even, how does gold go down in value at anything like the rate at wich the stockmarkets have & may again collapse ... ESPECIALLY in light of fears of such a collapse, where everyone and their mother may be rushing IN to gold ?

calling my broker in 10 minutes, unless anyone can give me a better reason not to.

Wasn't one of the reasons Kennedy was killed because he actually wanted the States to have an economy based with sterling or gold.

Anyway, you can see how a fake economy gets propped up by using paper stocks. Who really owns the States? And then back in the 20's you can see when rich people don't like the average schmo like you and I to get to close to their status the rug gets pulled from under your feet. Stocks tank, the rich stay rich and the fake rich bite it. Don't want to say that the rise and very quick fall of the e-stocks was one of those, but it sure looks like it.

Do what you want. Some people jumped from buildings during black monday, others found a way to stay in and ride it back up. Look at historical trends. A pretty consistent, linear growth pattern with a an occasional correction. You seem bo be buying into the hype and paranoia that this correction is a collapse. Yesterday, in late day trading should have demonstrated that there are plenty of investors ready to jump back in and buy. If you sell your shares today, you will have no trouble finding buyers who will profit from your fear.

  • Drifting you should go into the bank and convert it to a whack of these little ounce bars http://www.nwtmintbullion.com/gold_bars.php they are about the size of a credit card http://www.nwtmintbullion.com/images/gold_rcm_1_oz_bar.jpg If you're going to do it at any point. Make your own decisions for your own reasons.

Not saying you should be, but putting your money into gold paper traded stock will be no help. You need tangible material in your hands.

Kind of like oil eh? But people sure kill for that. You really think if it started to go to hell in a handbag that pebbles and stones would be traded? I think they would start with something like the precious metals and then move on down the line to sticks and stones.

look at what the native Americans traded for 1000's of years..beads, arrowheads (shaped stones) and animal pelts. Fur trade anyone?

Understood. Then somebody raped the land and upped the ante for what is traded and what that value is. Now we reap what we have sewn.

For the record they also paddled boats and didn't use oil. ;)

Much of the world was unaware and in it's infancy then so to speak. They had no idea some white man from the east with unheard of technologies would show up one day and say "hey let's all be friends until our cultural differences get in the way, then we'll start making more gunpowder and you can be our slaves or become topsoil"

We all know each other now and what it's all about. I suppose if aliens landed from outer space it would be something similar.
