I have not posted here for a few pages but I wanted to say before is this.... I do think its very smart to learn as many languages as possible. It can only help you in life. But when people make the comment that "Oh well in europe everybody learns many languages". Well, thats mainly b/c there countries are very close together like out states are. If All 50 states spoke different, then we would most likely speak many as well.Sure many Americans are lazy and don't want to learn others but for the most part they do not need to. Unless you are planning to educate yourself or visit another country then you by all means should learn everything you can about that country. Again, like I said before its a respect thing.

Someone else already said that and I definitely think it's true. I live in a very small country in Europe, and we have three official languages. Travel just a little bit and you're in a different country with a different language. My country is a little bigger than Vermont. If you think about the sheer size of the US and then add the English speaking part of Canada... it's huge.

And, not everyone in Europe learns other languages. And if they do, it doesn't mean they can actually speak those languages. Several people here said they had Spanish or French or German in high school but don't speak it. It's no different in Europe, I think. I had German, French and English in high school, the only one I'm more or less fluent in is English. I understand French and German (especially in writing) and can say a few basic things but that's it.

A lot of Europeans will understand English, especially the younger generations. But English is more common in Europe than, say, French is in the US.

I think knowledge of another language is becoming more important in the US and it seems that people see that and encourage foreign language acquisition.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

I see your point but I'm pretty sure that in Japan they teach English at a young age. So it's not just Europe.

I think we should teach foreign language in elementary schools because its easier to learn then. They could make Spanish mandatory if they wish and then let kids choose another language to learn if they wish to as an elective. I would love my kid to be as well versed in as many languages as possible. Then I can bring him with me when I go over seas as my interpreter. :)

Well, I think this comment here just says more about your ignorance than anything else... Specially when you talk about the 8th most visited country in the world...

How is my opinion about where I choose to travel ignorance?

You follow the news? The cartels are running that country, tell me why I should ignore the fact that cops are murdered everyday so I can vacation there.

    Who is showing their ignorance.

well, you said that Mexico is worse than Baghdad...
and I guess someone from Mexico, like the poster, could be slightly offended by that, don't you?
it's like you're told the US is a place of gun-slinging rednecks I guess;)

i have been to mexico and it really is a really great place but to tell someone that they are ignorant becuase they don't want to go to mexico is not right. for example i hear that Seattle is a great place but i don't really have any desire to go. it is not about ignorance but more about taste. also one lastthing i don't want to offend you but just because Mexico is the 8th most visit country does not mean that it is nice but could mean that it is cheap for people to go to and it is hot and has beaches.

sorry oen final thing, i just read teh other post and i have to say that teh comment abotu teh drug cortel killing people makes no sense as there are people in bagdad killing people too.

I live here, so yeah I think I know 1 or 2 things about how life is here... if you want to compare life here with life in Iraq and actually say it's better in Baghdad... well, I don't have to say anything else, you are doing a great job making yourself look foolish... Carry on, I'm done and won't interrupt further.

I guess the millions of tourists that come to the country each year will soften the blow from not receiving your distinguished visit.

    Cheers!

It's ignorant to say that Baghdad is a better place to visit than Mexico... and I'll stand by that.

EDIT: Hell, even fucking Tijuana, which is a shithole, is better than Baghdad... at least you don't get bombed while walking down the street. I don't care that he doesn't want to come here. We won't miss him.

i think it is ignorant to say that Mexico has people being killed by drug cartels as the reason for not going to mexico but i don't think that it is ignorant to say that bagdad is a better place to visit as that really is up to personal interest.

Mexico is a shithole, so is Baghdad. I really have no desire to go to either but there is no way I could stomach spending one lousy cent going to Mexico.

And if you think drugs don't run that country go ask those fisherman from Texas what their experience was. No thanks, the place is a third world DUMP.
